Added security through encryption and password protection, but speed of snapshot-level backup needs improvement
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable features are the replication to the cloud and the deduplication."
  • "In the most recent version of premium plus the replication has been removed, and it should re-added to the solution."

What is our primary use case?

We are a solution provider company, and I work with vendors to find products for my customers. This is one of the solutions that we provide and have customers working with.

This solution is used to perform backups of servers, including information from the cloud.

We have experience with the on-premises and hybrid-cloud deployment models, including Microsoft Azure cloud.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features are the replication to the cloud and the deduplication.

The encryption and password protection options are very good.

What needs improvement?

Taking a snapshot level backup with this solution is very slow compared to other products. The speed of this needs to be improved.

In the most recent version of premium plus the replication has been removed, and it should re-added to the solution. It is a big selling point.

It would be nice to have more features included with the ransomware protection.

The interface needs to be more user-friendly.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using this solution for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of this solution is good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability of this solution depends on the licensing.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support for this solution is very good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used to provide Veeam Backup, as well as Acronis. The pricing for continuous replication is higher than for this solution.

How was the initial setup?

This initial setup of this solution is straightforward. The deployment takes two days, maximum. One person can handle the deployment and maintenance.

What about the implementation team?

We perform the deployment of this solution for our customers.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Normally our customers purchase the premium plus license, rather than the standard one, which provides more options.

What other advice do I have?

This is a good solution because it offers multiple hybrid options. The same product can support local backup, cloud backup, and backup a server to the cloud as well. It is a complete portfolio available in a single product. When comparing to other products, all of the options are available.

I would rate this solution a six out of ten.

A good backup solution with very good stability
Pros and Cons
  • "The backup is the most valuable feature. It also makes storage very easy."
  • "The only problem with the solution is that when I change the drive capacity, it has to do a full backup. It's a problem when I have five servers to backup. When I only want to change the size of the drive, I have to do a full backup that can take one week."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution for backup purposes.

How has it helped my organization?

It's more the convenience of the solution than an overall improvement to our organization. I can restore online and check that it is working alright as well.

What is most valuable?

The backup is the most valuable feature. It also makes storage very easy.

What needs improvement?

The only problem with the solution is that when I change the drive capacity, it has to do a full backup. It's a problem when I have five servers to backup. When I only want to change the size of the drive, I have to do a full backup that can take one week.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is very good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution offers good scalability. I don't have plans to increase the usage at this time. Only I am using it.

How are customer service and technical support?

I've never had to call technical support, so I can't speak to the service level.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Previously, we used NetVault. It didn't have all of the solutions we needed for the VM, so we switched.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy; it wasn't complex. Deployment took about three hours. You just need one person for deployment and maintenance.

What about the implementation team?

I did have help with the implementation.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The licensing we have is a yearly contract. I don't think there are costs beyond the standard licensing fee.

What other advice do I have?

I am using the on-premises version of the solution.

I like the solution; it's working well for us.

I would rate it eight out of ten.

Offers good data protection functionalities and enables us to backup the virtual server
Pros and Cons
  • "The data protection functionality is the most valuable feature of this solution."
  • "It should be easier to switch between backup locations. We have multiple data storage locations and sometimes one of those storages need to be replaced. It would be nice if they made it easier to reconfigure the backup configuration."

What is our primary use case?

We were using the hybrid model of this solution but now we're using the on-prem model. We switched to on-prem mainly because of the costs and that it's reachable when something happens. We use this solution to backup the virtual server.

What is most valuable?

The data protection functionality is the most valuable feature of this solution.

What needs improvement?

It should be easier to switch between backup locations. We have multiple data storage locations and sometimes one of those storages need to be replaced. It would be nice if they made it easier to reconfigure the backup configuration.

I would like to see an integrated solution from Arcseve to replicate it to the Azure environment of Arcserve itself, an environment set up by Arcserve ready to connect to the UDP software. It should be a plug and play to replicate the data to an Azure of Arcserve itself.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Arcserve for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is pretty stable. In the past, we had some issues with a different version in which we had to eventually shut down the servers in the production environment. Now, we don't have any issues with it.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability depends on the configuration. Only I use this solution in my company because I'm the only one in my company who is responsible for the backup and restore functionality. I am also the only one who maintains it.

How are customer service and technical support?

Their technical support is excellent. They always understand what the problem is.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward. It took around two or three hours.

What about the implementation team?

I deployed it myself.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We only have the maintenance of three standard UDP licenses. Each license is 50 Euro. There are some additional costs for the storage and software but it has nothing to do with the UDP.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate it an eight out of ten.

Think better of the configuration before shutting off the whole backup environment because when it's running for a couple of months or years it's difficult to change the data storage location and configuration. It would be nice to have more of a whitepaper from Arcserve with respect to setting up certain environments.

It's good software that is doing the work of restoring that we need.
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable features of this solution are that I can by just one click, copy and paste anything that I would want. I do not have to restore the whole virtual machine."
  • "It is very stable."
  • "Every time I change the disc, I have to do a full backup."

What is our primary use case?

My primary use case for this solution is for backup and restoring. We use it for our VMware solutions and also our physical machines. It's good software that is helping us with our restoring.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features of this solution are that I can by just one click, copy and paste anything that I would want. I do not have to restore the whole virtual machine. I can just right-click, open it in Arcserve view, and copy anything I want to add to the production. This is very easy and simple. And, the restore function is very fast. This is a huge benefit. The backup is also very short.

What needs improvement?

Every time I change the disc, I have to do a full backup. But, we were serviced for this, and it appears to not be doing this anymore.

For how long have I used the solution?

More than five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is very stable. It has not crashed for us. And, every time that we needed to restore something, we had it. We could restore very fast.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I like the scalability of the solution. It seems OK.

How is customer service and technical support?

We use technical support by a local provider that is very good.

How was the initial setup?

I was not involved with the initial setup of the solution, my manager was in charge of that for our organization.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I do not work with the pricing or licensing issue of the solution for our organization.

What other advice do I have?

Before choosing a solution, I always consider the stability and whether it is doing the work and restoring that it is supposed to do.

Does not allow us to independently restore individual users' mailboxes
Pros and Cons
  • "It allows us to back up all the servers and centrally manage them."
  • "We cannot restore each user's mailbox. Each user's mailbox should be independently restorable. Also, this solution is very slow. If you select all of the servers, it runs for a long time... It needs to be faster. Finally, If anything happens to one server we should be able to switch to another server."

How has it helped my organization?

It has improved our disaster management. If necessary, we can restore all our databases and applications. No matter what happens, we have backup.

What is most valuable?

Arcserve is user-friendly and allows us to back up all the servers and centrally manage them.

What needs improvement?

  • We cannot restore each user's mailbox. Each user's mailbox should be independently restorable.
  • This solution is very slow. If you select all of the servers, it runs for a long time. Even a full night is not enough to perform a backup. It needs to be faster.
  • We are using a Linux server and a Windows Server, and those servers should be supported, as well as SQL Database, mail databases, and file servers.
  • If anything happens to one server we should be able to switch to another server.

For how long have I used the solution?

More than five years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's not very scalable.

How is customer service and technical support?

The support is not really so good. Sometimes we have had to find solutions on our own.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Arcserve at five out of 10. It's slow, and we cannot restore each user's mailbox individually.

Enables High Availability Although It's Expensive

What is most valuable?

High availability.

How has it helped my organization?

I proposed and set up DR and HA solutions for customers who are high profile and in need of business critical functionalities. Implementing these solutions raised the company profile considerably, as the solutions are exactly what organizations need these days.

What needs improvement?

The product requires too many VMs as intermediaries.

For how long have I used the solution?

One year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No, the internet provides the stability factor.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No.

How are customer service and technical support?

Eight out of 10, due to the local support offered by local distributors.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Yes, our old solution used tape backups and didn't allow HA for secondary sites, active-passive, etc.

How was the initial setup?

Initial setup is a little complex but there are guides so it is manageable.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pricing is very expensive and licensing is on an annual basis, but this is the norm for a lot of providers today.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Yes, Veeam.

What other advice do I have?

Go with Veeam. Veeam is cheaper and more flexible and uses few VM intermediaries.

Easy To Use, Good Stability, And Disk Space Gain With Greater Data Protection

What is most valuable?

Deduplication, virtual standby and replication. Easy to use, good stability, and disk space gain with greater data protection and we were able to replicate the environment to another place or other platform at no additional cost.

How has it helped my organization?

Disk space savings with a higher number of protected data and better performance due to the absence of agents in the virtual servers.

What needs improvement?

Replication cloud.

For how long have I used the solution?

Two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

None.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

None.

How are customer service and technical support?

Bad. They delay completing the analysis of a problem and absence of contouring solution for unresolved problems.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We always use Arcserve.

How was the initial setup?

Simple.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Good prices for the features that they offer.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We always use Arcserve.

What other advice do I have?

Evaluate the functions that the product has available without additional pricing.

Data Store Deduplication: Saving Space On Storage And Time To Backup.

What is most valuable?

Data store deduplication, which saves space on storage and time to backup.

How has it helped my organization?

Compliance on information security and reliability.

What needs improvement?

Use of RAM memory. I see no way to improve this without a SSD disk. I could not explain this more technically on a development level. The high use of RAM memory is a headache for those who wants to implement the system WITH all the resources in use. The RAM is used to cache data and make the deduplication process possible.

For how long have I used the solution?

Three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No.

How are customer service and technical support?

Low. They are available in a few languages and the ones supporting me had a low level of knowledge.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Symantec Backup Exec 12-14. Ease use, backup speed, and restore.

How was the initial setup?

No, very simple.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Simple licensing and are on average market prices.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Symantec Backup Exec.

What other advice do I have?

Mind the prerequisites planning. The deployment thinking is three years in the future.

We have a backup which is replicated to a remote site with instant recovery

What is most valuable?

It is easy to use and is an all-around solution for the backup of the Windows/Linux/Hyper-V/VMware environments.

It has a very simple installation and a straightforward setup.

Replication, deduplication and the cloud integration are the most valuable features.

How has it helped my organization?

We now have a backup which is replicated to a remote site with instant recovery.

What needs improvement?

Arcserve needs to add the Linux appliance for the setup, which should be available as the software appliance with an automated install on Bare Metal, as it is available for the OVA on VMware or Microsoft Hyper-V that supports KVM.

What I would like to see available in Arcserve is:

Virtual appliance for VMware, Hyper-V and KVM.

A software appliance that is ISO so you start installation on an approved server (from HPE, DELL, Cisco whatever as long as it is Tier 1 vendor available in every country today) and you create appliances without much thinking regarding how to lay down configuration.

The reason for this is that the support network for Arcserve appliances is not available in most of the countries outside USA or EU to replace broken units in less than 15 days.

So you stay without backup for a minimum of 15 days. With the software appliance, you avoid virtualization overhead and you create appliance according to best practice from Arcserve. This is something we do with Sophos UTM often.

Finally, I would like to see better integration with HCI (Nutanix, Scale Computing, and SimpliVity).

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used this solution for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

There was no stability issue.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

There were no scalability issues either.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is great.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Previously, we were using HPE Data Protector, however, it was a too complicated and outdated interface, so we moved over to this solution.

How was the initial setup?

It has a very simple and straightforward setup.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

You should take a look at Arcserve UDP and compare it to some other solutions.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We looked at Veeam, Unitrends, NAKIVO and Simpana Commvault.

What other advice do I have?

It is a very good product for most of the organizations.

It allowed me to build a low-cost DR site that replicates from the backup, but it currently lacks SIFS (NetApp or EMC) support from the UDP console.

What is most valuable?

  • Support for physical systems
  • Agentless backup for VMware & Hyper-V
  • Global deduplication
  • Remote replication
  • Virtual standbuy

How has it helped my organization?

With UDP, I built a low-cost DR site that replicates from the backup.

What needs improvement?

For the next release, I'd like to see

  • SIFS (NetApp or EMC) support from the UDP console.
  • In the current version we need to integrate with Arcserv backup 16.5 NDMP module
  • Tighter integration with tape.
  • Better Integration with RHA.
  • Multi-Tenancy
  • Virtual Stand by Seamless Integration form hyper v VHDX source to VMware VMDK

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the Arcserve Unified Data Protection (UDP).

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

No issues encountered.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No issues encountered.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No issues encountered.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I used Backup Exec before. I switched because UDP is agentless, which works well for my VMware backup to disk, as well as being easy to sync with the remote site

How was the initial setup?

The setup is straightforward, and in less than three hours, I got the first backup running.

What about the implementation team?

I did it in-house.

What was our ROI?

It took us 12 months to get.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

You should go for the three year license.
