A plethora of advantages in a single, secure environment

Pros and Cons

  • "The traceability is so simple that I don't need to do any additional configurations related to traceability."
  • "The search and replace feature within the tool itself could be improved."

What is our primary use case?

I worked in the ALM and PLM industry, and for my various clients, I have evaluated, I have deployed, and I have come up with a strategy for lifecycle management solutions. Now I want to share the same with people around the world so that they can benefit from my knowledge.

Regarding codeBeamer ALM, I have the SaaS version, I have deployed it on the cloud and I have used the on-premise version as well for my various clients.

Our clients' primary use case was for automotive embedded systems, wherein they required ISO 26262 certification. They also use it as a stronger tool to manage the whole of their portfolio.

We are planning to go all out with codeBeamer. One of our clients has agreed. They have decided strategically that codeBeamer will replace their other tools. They will be retiring IBM Doors, XG, PTC Integrity, and Jama.

How has it helped my organization?

Two of my important clients were trying to work on a couple of big projects which were spread across the globe. CodeBeamer has provided them with an out-of-box solution that doesn't require any additional infrastructure.

During this pandemic, my clients were able to conveniently work remotely thanks to codeBeamer. When the lockdown situation started happening all of a sudden in most countries, if you have a solution that is browser-based, you can easily provide access to your employees. CodeBeamer has proven to be a scalable solution for working from a home environment.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of codeBeamer is something called a Smart Requirement View. This feature really gives me an advantage and it's something that is available out-of-box. I haven't come across this particular feature in any other tool. Another feature that I like is its traceability.

I can do almost 95% of the customizations without any programming knowledge. I don't need to hire a programmer to do customization. I took a look at the other tools, like IBM and PTC Integrity and Polarion — with those solutions, a lot of programming is required to do even small customizations. With codeBeamer ALM, customization is very straightforward.

Smart View is a valuable feature because that particular view gives me the flexibility of how I should look at my project or how I should look at my work items.

The traceability is so simple that I don't need to do any additional configurations related to traceability.

One more benefit that I am especially fond of is the ability to migrate from an on-premise server to the cloud, which was very smooth when I compared it to other tools. It just took a couple of hours for complete data migration. In contrast, my experience with PTC and IBM took quite a lot of time, and there was indeed a downtime there when we were migrating. With codeBeamer ALM, when we're migrating, there is almost zero downtime. There were just two minutes of downtime.

What needs improvement?

There are thousands of requirements that are modified or which are reviewed; those reviews cannot be seen at one single point in time. You need to click on each individual review item to check it out.

The search and replace feature within the tool itself could be improved. Not using any other third-party tools.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used this solution for roughly 15 months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

My impression regarding the stability is that it's an excellent tool.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's a highly scalable solution compared to any other competitors in the market. In fact, this is one point wherein I rate this tool on top of all the other tools. When I say other tools, I am referring to PTC Integrity, Polarion, and IBM.

How are customer service and technical support?

In general, technical support is quite good, but you have to reach them during their live chat office hours. They should implement a hotline chat, that would be a good feature. Most of the time, emails are replied to within a day.

I would give their technical support a rating of nine out of ten.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very straightforward. Almost everything is ready to go, straight out of the box — you don't need the assistance of a third-party solution.

The plugins are already ready. You don't need extra time for project configuration.

Deployment takes roughly two days.

What about the implementation team?

We follow a deployment strategy. Our first rollout happened within a week of trials.

We installed codeBeamer and we just enabled and configured the plugins. We tested it on guest servers and we rolled it out immediately within a week.

Typically, two to three people are more than enough for deployment. One will be the system administrator, another will be the plugin developer and plugin manager, and the third will be the template configurator.

A little bit of maintenance is required, but not much. Specifically maintaining the databases, maintaining the artifacts, managing the access rules, etc. Typically, the admin activities need to be maintained.

What was our ROI?

Our clients are getting a huge dividend on codeBeamer. It allowed them to reduce their admin load by roughly 35-40%. They also experienced a nearly 65-70% reduction regarding customization and the deployment load.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

They're not the most expensive product on the market, but they're not the cheapest either — I'd say codeBeamer ALM is moderately priced.

What other advice do I have?

codeBeamer is a great tool, but having said that, make sure that you have the proper expertise to understand the ALM. As there are around 1,000 plus advantages with codeBeamer, I'd recommend that you go to their website to fully understand just how beautiful that tool is.

On a scale from one to ten, I would give this solution a rating of ten.

one important aspect of codeBeamer is its overall capability in multifaceted domains and readily available templates. We talk mostly about it from the automotive aspect, but this tool is great for all industries, specifically the aerospace and pharmaceutical industries.

Good metrics and lifecycle connectivity, but better setup documentation and reporting is needed

Pros and Cons

  • "You can track the metrics in the Agile dashboard very easily."
  • "I would like to see more, easily trackable reports."

What is our primary use case?

We are a solution provider and as a consultant, I have evaluated codeBeamer ALM for some of our clients. One of our clients is using this solution to work on medical products, and we have other clients such as telecoms who provide services.

What is most valuable?

The features related to metrics are very useful. These are available in other products, but in codeBeamer, they are very simple to use. You can track the metrics in the Agile dashboard very easily.

The connectivity in terms of the lifecycle from inception to end is very good.

What needs improvement?

You should be able to combine multiple parameters in a single gadget, and you should be able to retrieve that particular value. For example, if a feature is in support, we want to understand things like how many days it has been there, how many users have searched for it, and so on, for a specific period of time. Being able to track how many days it has been in support is important, but there might be a lot of these different parameters. Having a single value generated would be helpful for tracking.

During the initial setup, I did not see any documentation to assist users with the steps that are required to get started.

I would like to see more, easily trackable reports. Ultimately, I would like to see real-time data, real-time reports, and real-time data analytics.

How are customer service and technical support?

I have found the technical support to be good, although the length of time you will wait for response depends on the complexity or difficulty of the issue. For simple activities they will do some research and get back to you, and with something of medium difficulty they will take a few extra minutes. However, for complex issues, they will take a lot of time.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have taken courses on Micro Focus ALM Quality Center, but have not used it for more than two years. I find that codeBeamer ALM is easier to use.

I have also used Jira and I find it to be a very simple tool. If you want functionality then you have to buy other gadgets to do it. Another drawback with Jira is that you have to write SQL queries, which people don't have time for.

How was the initial setup?

I found the initial setup to be easy, but I know these tools very well. I would say that the process is straightforward, although I did not see any documentation. For a new user, they have to follow a lot of steps and it is harder without instructions.

Initially, this product used to be deployed on-premises. For the past four years, it is normally deployed on a public cloud, although for some high-security users, it is deployed on a private cloud. Our customer who works on medical products keeps everything on-premises because they don't want to risk their data being exposed. The telecoms prefer a cloud deployment because with the bulk of their data in the cloud, they have easy access to all of the details from around the globe.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I do not see any problem with the cost. It is reasonably priced and in accordance with the industry standards.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

When it came time to evaluate ALM solutions for some of our clients, codeBeamer ALM was the one that we chose. I have implemented small projects for evaluation purposes to ensure that it meets their needs.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I have about 16 years of experience in Agile processes, and about 10 years of experience with ALM products. I am CSM/CSPO certified and work with Agile a lot, which has put in a good position to evaluate these products.

My advice to anybody who is implementing codeBeamer is to make sure to understand what data is needed from multiple ends. You need to use the concept of data warehousing and BI reports.

I find it very simple and easy to use, but there are several areas in need of improvement.

I would rate this solution a six out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Covers a client's requirements well, excellent for replacing IBM DOORS and perfect for the manufacturing industry

Pros and Cons

  • "The solution easily replaces IBM DOORS, which no longer offers maintenance in China."
  • "The solution has a very small market share in China. It's almost like a startup."

What is most valuable?

The solution often fits our client's requirements quite well.

The solution easily replaces IBM DOORS, which no longer offers maintenance in China.

The solution is perfect for companies in the manufacturing industry. We, for example, use it in the car industry as well as pharmaceuticals.

Overall, it's a very good solution.

What needs improvement?

The solution has a very small market share in China. It's almost like a startup.

The solution tends to eat up a budget.

The solution needs to be marketed better in China to give it more visibility.

The initial setup is complex.

The manuals and UI are all in English, which makes it difficult for some end-users as it causes a language barrier. There needs to be Chinese documentation and training materials.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for half a year now.

How are customer service and technical support?

My experience is largely in pre-sales, so I haven't really dealt with technical support.

However, I will say that documentation in Chinese would go a long way in helping users in terms of understanding the solution.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We also use Atlasia.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not straightforward. In fact, it's quite complex.

What other advice do I have?

We're a reseller and a solution partner.

We generally give the clients the latest version of the solution. Often, we convert a user from IBM DOORS. If they need to replace DOORS I need to get an ALM requirement to them.

I'd recommend the solution. It's not an ideal solution for small companies or internet-based companies. However, it's perfect for industrial customers.

Overall, the solution is quite good and we've really liked it. I'd rate it eight out of ten.
