Easy to administer many services from a single dashboard, with good instant recovery capability

Pros and Cons

  • "It makes our administrators' lives much easier to combine backup, archiving, and services like hosting file shares in one central system with only one user interface."
  • "I would like to see Microsoft Exchange DAG supported as soon as possible."

What is our primary use case?

The Cohesity Cluster solution is a great second-tier data management cluster for the backup of various sorts of servers like VMware VMs using the VMware API, Baremetal hardware using a Cohesity Agent, but also for hosting file shares and archiving data like emails and DBs.

How has it helped my organization?

In the past, we had a two-node cluster for backups and a second two-node cluster for archiving purposes. We were able to replace these four other systems with a two-node Cohesity cluster solution.

The new web-based UI has made administration much more central and a lot easier than it was with the software-based tool for the old systems.

What is most valuable?

It makes our administrators' lives much easier to combine backup, archiving, and services like hosting file shares in one central system with only one user interface.

One dashboard for all services, no need to have multiple ones to check.

An instant recovery capability that includes indexing of the backed up data helps a lot.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see minor features added to the user interface, such as the software version in the dashboard.

I would like to see Microsoft Exchange DAG supported as soon as possible. I have been told that it's on the roadmap.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for four months.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The cluster is modular and can be expanded without any problems.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have moved from Actifio Data Management and a Dell EMC Centera archiving solution to a Cohesity Cluster.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Cohesity is available on your own hardware or on hardware like HPE.

We purchased support from Cohesity to ensure that should we face an issue, we don't have to deal with different service providers. This makes the solution probably a little bit more expensive, but I'm sure it will safe time and money later on when support is needed.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated Cloudian Hyperstore prior to choosing this solution.

What other advice do I have?

To me, the Cohesity Cluster solution is almost complete. There are only minor things that I would like to see added to the user interface.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Good performance, easy to use, and helpful dashboard

Pros and Cons

  • "Instant volume mount and the SpanFS filesystem itself, which has great dedupe and compression across all of our backups."
  • "Reporting is one area that isn't as robust as it could be."

What is our primary use case?

We use the cluster for local backup and restore as well as for sending backups offsite. We make use of the file server capabilities as well. We can spin up test and dev workloads as needed without impacting our production storage. This solution replaced Veeam and ExaGrid.

How has it helped my organization?

Backups and restores are much faster and we were able to increase our backup frequency where it made sense to do so in order to have lower RPO. We were also able to move our backup solution off of the fiber channel, which will help with our eventual decommissioning of that portion of our infrastructure.

What is most valuable?

Instant volume mount and the SpanFS filesystem itself, which has great dedupe and compression across all of our backups. Our admins have been able to run restore jobs with little training, as well. The dashboard makes it easy to see if you have any issues with your backup jobs.

What needs improvement?

Reporting is one area that isn't as robust as it could be. The next release supposedly improves upon that but I have not seen it yet.

We had real issues with restores on our older Red Hat 5.x systems, but we have upgraded those and no longer need support for that OS.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've had our Cohesity cluster in place for more than one year.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously used Veeam and ExaGrid. We liked Veeam, but we did not see any innovation out of ExaGrid and they were becoming progressively more expensive. I was wary of vendor lock-in if we continued to invest in that platform. The speed of their solution was just not good enough for us.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I advise others to spin up a Cohesity virtual edition on their infrastructure. We ran backups in parallel for a month to test all features before even bringing in test hardware. Spinning up the virtual edition was quick and painless.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated Veeam with other back end storage as well as Rubrik. Rubrik looked nice but was more expensive and we felt it was lacking features. It would have been a step up from our tired ExaGrid solution.

What other advice do I have?

I would say that Cohesity seems like they are a very forward looking company. They are adding features with each release and seem to be investing heavily in extending their product. I feel like we will get good value out of our investment.

Offers high performance VM restore with a simple and responsive GUI

Pros and Cons

  • "This solution is easy to manage."
  • "This solution is only compatible with a limited number of storage arrays, including Pure and Cisco Hyperflex."

What is our primary use case?

We are using this solution for the DataProtect feature in our VMware environment. It is also protecting SQL and Exchange 2013 servers.

We have two clusters that replicate to each other; this process is also very fast.

How has it helped my organization?

This solution has given us a three-fold performance increase.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is the instant mass restore of VMs. I am able to restore VMs in a few minutes.

The other great thing is the Google search, as it helps a lot and accelerates the restore process.

Apps are very cool too!!

The Cloud Archives are very easy to configure. We are using AWS Glacier.

Fully hydrated Snapshots give you the ability to do incremental forever.

The GUI is simple and very responsive.

This solution is easy to manage. Just a quick look to the dashboard every morning and that's it. You will spend ten minutes, max, of your day on Cohesity.

What needs improvement?

Being able to take a backup of OneDrive and Sharepoint in Office 365 would be great. It is in the Roadmap, but we would like to see it in the next release of this solution.

This solution is only compatible with a limited number of storage arrays, including Pure and Cisco Hyperflex.

The cloud management solution needs a little more development.  Now it is really like the same dashboard than the one you are using locally.  They put some AI in the prediction  of when you will be out of space but I would appreciate more AI to discover malware (but is in the road map for version 6.4 I think)  .

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using this solution for six months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This is a stable solution. It is running by itself.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of this solution is impressive.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support for this solution is excellent.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Our previous solution which was Quest Rapid Recovery. We switched because of the performance, which is three times better with Cohesity.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of this solution was very easy.

Implementation took only a few hours and backups begin the same day it has been physically racked.

What about the implementation team?

We were assisted by the vendor team. The knew what they were doing!

In a few hours, the solution was in production.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Prior to choosing this solution, we evaluated Rubrik and Commvault.

What other advice do I have?

The software is running by itself! It was a very great acquisition for us.

The product is easy to put in place and all backups are done very quickly

What is our primary use case?

Backing up of our virtual environment (VMware) by replacing our current backup software that is more of an old fashion solution: not very scalable and not really well designed for multitenancy.

How has it helped my organization?

I was surprised to see how well the Cohesity appliances performed and how easy the setup was. After a couple of hours, the cluster was up, and we were able to take backup of our VMware infrastructure. After that, I tested a few backups and restores, and everything was running smoothly.

What is most valuable?

The product is easy to put in place, all backups are done very quickly, and it's easy to perform restores. What I prefer in the product is its simplicity. No useless settings to define, everything is ready just after the initial setup.

I also had the opportunity to deploy new nodes and upgrade the cluster; everything is well thought and is running very well.

What needs improvement?

Currently, the product is lacking some features like BMR and backup for the cluster, but I think these are things that would be added in a few months.

For how long have I used the solution?

Less than one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

So far so good, I've never had any major issue, and deployment of the cluster was really easy.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is highly scalable.

How are customer service and technical support?

So far so good, a few little issues, nothing dramatic but support was able to help.

Their support site already contains a lot of information where most of the answers you might have can be found.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

The solution we had before was not very reliable, not scalable, and the security was poor.

How was the initial setup?

Very easy to do, not much documentation to read, and really easy to work with. Everything is logical, and you can easily do what you want to do.

What about the implementation team?

One Cohesity team came during the POC, but it was really easy. So as a test, I also reinstall the cluster myself very quickly when all requirements are met.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pricing is fair for what the product does, compared to our previous solution, it's even cheaper.

We will also save a lot of money on the support as we had a lot of issues with the previous product.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We also checked Commvault and Rubrik.

Commvault was also a very complete solution but much more difficult to put in place. Also, the lack of hyperconvergence on the storage side was a blocking factor.

Rubrik was very similar to Cohesity, but we liked in Cohesity the NAS, TEST/DEV and WORM options that allow us to use it for our archives.

What other advice do I have?

Cohesity offers the possibility to do a free POC, so if you have any doubt, try it, and I am sure you will see a lot of their advantages.

The ability to host file shares and back up our environment in one device is amazing

What is our primary use case?

We use this to back up our VM environment. We are also using this to store file shares for our customers.

How has it helped my organization?

It's allowed us to consolidate various backup solutions into one. This has helped us from paying separate vendors for our past backup solution.

What is most valuable?

We have found that being able to host file shares and back up our environment in one device is amazing.

What needs improvement?

I would say they could work on the update process of the nodes.  They could also make it easier to try out beta versions of their software without the need of opening tickets.

For how long have I used the solution?

Searching data in VMs for restore and downloading specific files

What is our primary use case?

Backing up virtual machines on our public and private IaaS platforms. It is also used as an NFS shared secondary storage to virtual machines.

How has it helped my organization?

We got rid of not being able to scale our storage, having to constantly add new storage and use windows as a repository doesn't scale above 2TB.

What is most valuable?

  • Scale-out
  • Test and dev
  • Directly spinning data
  • Searching data in VMs for restore and downloading specific files.

What needs improvement?

Support is good, but some functions are added pretty late, like vCloud Director support. This could speed up adoption for service providers.

For how long have I used the solution?

One to three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We've had no downtime in the time it's been used. Some minor issues that we do get are resolved really quickly with support.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scale-out capabilities are great.

How are customer service and technical support?

They are a great help on performance issues and minor bugs.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Veeam, we came upon Cohesity while searching for scale-out storage.

How was the initial setup?

Straightforward, it's almost plug and play.

What about the implementation team?

In-house, we're a service provider.

What was our ROI?

We resell the product.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The nice thing is there is no further licensing when you purchase the system. All is integrated.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

What other advice do I have?

Take it a go, I think you'll love it.

Replication to other Cohesity clusters is a breeze

What is our primary use case?

Secure backup solutions that can replicate off-site to a variety of secondary storage solutions, including other Cohesity clusters.

How has it helped my organization?

We have quick, reliable, verifiable backups that replicate off-site. The system is easy to administer and troubleshoot. Support is quick to respond and helpful. We used to have Avamar, and they were none of those things.

What is most valuable?

  • Replication
  • Easy SQL and VM restores
  • Clones for the development environment
  • I can do fewer full SQL backups because the retires will auto replay the log file backups for me.
  • Full SQL backups essentials happen every hour, but they are a combo of full and log backups, and restore takes no longer because of auto log replays.
  • VM backups are quick as are restores.
  • Google cloud archival was easy to set up.
  • The Google project side was more difficult than setting up an archive.
  • Replication to other Cohesity clusters is a breeze.

What needs improvement?

Navigation is sometimes a challenge from the aspect of drilling down into details which isn’t normally needed.

For how long have I used the solution?

One to three years.

It has the ability to sync our latest backups to amazon web services for offsite DR

What is our primary use case?

We utilize Cohesity as our backup solution, it provides tiered backup layers of our VMware and physical environment as well as replaces tape storage for archival uses.

How has it helped my organization?

We no longer need to use tape storage, which saves us many hours of effort managing them. Additionally, we have a very responsive environment for recoveries and test/dev.

What is most valuable?

We love the near-instant recovery windows, as well as the ability to sync our latest backups to amazon web services for offsite DR.

What needs improvement?

We don't love the Exchange integration, it works fine but requires a third-party application called Kroll. We'd rather have a built-in solution to manage Exchange messages/DB level restores such as what Veeam provides.

For how long have I used the solution?

Less than one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's relatively new, but it's growing rapidly, and their support team has been excellent when we've needed them.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Excellent scalability, just add more nodes.

How are customer service and technical support?

Extremely fast response both to email and phone, very knowledgeable.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We've used multiple solutions in the past, most recently Veeam for VMware backup and doing long-term archiving to tape. We liked the built-in dedupe/compression features of Cohesity, the near-instant recovery, and the cloud archival options.

How was the initial setup?

Fairly straightforward, especially with a VAR assistance.

What about the implementation team?

VAR and a Cohesity rep.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It's not cheap, but you get what you pay for, and it is really an all-in-one solution.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

ExaGrid and sticking with Veeam.

It's completely reliable and easy to restore

What is our primary use case?

Virtual machines Four physical machines A lot of SQL databases A huge amount of applications and application databases.  Mainly backing up locally, then replicating to the cloud, for three months.

How has it helped my organization?

The complex, cumbersome restores are gone. It's simple to back up. It's completely reliable and easy to restore. It has a lightning fast restore.

What is most valuable?

The spin-up of a VM within a test environment for backup testing along with quick restores.

What needs improvement?

Bare metal backups of MS AD Microsoft Exchange online mailbox backups would be fantastic. Restoring OUs/individual users from the AD would be awesome.

We used to use NetBackup. We are tired of using tapes and Cohesity has the features that we're interested in.

What is our primary use case?

We were backing up about 160 TB to tape per week. We are still moving over to Cohesity, however, we will not have the need to have the hardware related to tapes next year. Also, the money we spend on new versions of tapes is not going towards more clusters. In Cohesity, my backups are running faster and I have more frequent crash consistent data.

How has it helped my organization?

Cohesity will save us money, time, and manpower. We will have quick redundancy to AWS for our Cohesity node. I am new to backups and I have been able to quickly learn the basics in the tool.

What is most valuable?

This tool is very straightforward and clean. The menus are not over complicated or cluttered. I have very little experience with backups, but Cohesity has made it simple to learn the basics. There are also more complex integrations and programming that can be done if desired.

What needs improvement?

Cohesity is working on this, however, I would like to see a more expanded KB section. They have created a few videos also, more would be great. Their documentation is also currently being expanded.

For how long have I used the solution?

Still implementing.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We chose to go bleeding edge with the 6.0.0a release. We have encountered a few cluster crashes because of indexing on XFS file systems this should be fixed in 6.1.0

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Not yet.

How are customer service and technical support?

So far support has been amazing.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used NetBackup. We are tired of using tapes and Cohesity has the features that we're interested in.

How was the initial setup?

With the help of our local tech, the setup was quite easy.

What about the implementation team?

We used our local Cohesity sales and tech team.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

During your implementation stage, make sure you have a good Cohesity rep. Ours had completed over 200 implementations. He was very knowledgeable.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Rubrik was the main tool we looked at.

What other advice do I have?

At this time I don't, as I learn more I will update my review.

A cost-effective storage designed for secondary or archival data

Pros and Cons

  • "Cohesity is a cost-effective storage designed for secondary or archival data. It also integrates well with a number of other systems, like VMware, Pure Storage, or AWS with its large array of APIs available to the user."
  • "The four independent node cluster architecture is redundant. It maintains data integrity and load balancing."
  • "Since it is an evolving product, there are lot of frequent releases which require upgrades to be done every other weekend."
  • "The support team could do a better job. Sometimes finding the correct person is cumbersome and time consuming."

What is our primary use case?

Cohesity has acted as a perfect secondary storage for storing our archival data, as well as running the non I/O intensive VMs directly on the NFS data stores.

How has it helped my organization?

Cohesity is a cost-effective storage designed for secondary or archival data. It also integrates well with a number of other systems, like VMware, Pure Storage, or AWS with its large array of APIs available to the user. Backing up VMs, indexing data, and restoring data can be lightening fast. At the same time, the data compression and dedupe are robust and the best in this category.

What is most valuable?

  • Restoring the backed up VMs directly on vCenter through API integration, which is lightening fast.
  • Integration with cloud storage, like S3 from AWS and Pure Storage.
  • The four independent node cluster architecture is redundant. It maintains data integrity and load balancing.

What needs improvement?

Since it is an evolving product, there are lot of frequent releases which require upgrades to be done every other weekend.

For how long have I used the solution?

One to three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Sometimes new releases have a few bugs, but they are promptly fixed by the support team. Other than that, it is a fairly stable product.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is highly scalable and follows a scale out approach. You need a minimum of four nodes to make a cluster.

How are customer service and technical support?

The support team could do a better job. Sometimes finding the correct person is cumbersome and time consuming.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We were looking to replace multiple backup solutions for physical servers and VMware virtual machines. Cohesity has been a one stop solution for us.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is fairly simple.

What about the implementation team?

Support guided us remotely throughout the installation.

What was our ROI?

I cannot disclose the exact numbers. Compared to the products that we had earlier, Cohesity replaced our primary backup solution. It runs VMs. All our backup mount points are on Cohesity in our environment, and this is at a fraction of the cost.

Backups are quick and painless to set up

Pros and Cons

  • "We are saving valuable datacenter rack space, which is critical as we evaluate co-location options."
  • "We are looking forward to the next release, so we can take advantage of the AHV backup for our Nutanix environment."
  • "Backups are quick and painless to set up."
  • "Physical RDMs on virtual machines could be a bit easier to configure and plan out."
  • "The rack mounting instructions did not appear to be correct, but we were able to overcome it."

What is our primary use case?

Replacing our old disk-based backup system with a modern hyperconverged solution. Also, we are saving valuable datacenter rack space, which is critical as we evaluate co-location options.

How has it helped my organization?

Administratively, my staff is relieved at the ease of management and ongoing administration with Cohesity. Backups are quick and painless to set up.

What is most valuable?

  • Integration with VMware
  • We are looking forward to the next release, so we can take advantage of the AHV backup for our Nutanix environment.

What needs improvement?

  • I thought physical RDM's were supported, but apparently that is not the case.
  • The rack mounting instructions did not appear to be correct, but we were able to overcome it.

For how long have I used the solution?

Less than one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No issues.

How are customer service and technical support?

I have not had to call them yet, but we have heard great things.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used a previous solution. We switched because the ongoing maintenance costs were growing astronomically, and it was not really built for the virtual datacenter environment.

How was the initial setup?

Super easy!

What about the implementation team?

Vendor team and in-house team together. Our Sales Engineer was awesome.

What was our ROI?

Unsure at this time.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Ensure that you understand the per TB licensing model. Also, Exchange backups are not native to Cohesity and require Kroll.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated Rubrik, Commvault, and Veeam.

Pros and Cons

  • "I love the ability to clone a virtual server in only minutes."
  • "I would like to see Cohesity have the ability to do a file level restore from a Windows server, which is storing data on dynamic disk."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use it for data recovery and backups. We use VMware vSphere for our virtualization, and they fit together seamlessly.

How has it helped my organization?

It has mainly given us peace of mind knowing that our backups are going to work, and we will be able to easily restore our data, if needed.

What is most valuable?

The file/folder search feature is great. I also love the ability to clone a virtual server in only minutes.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see Cohesity have the ability to do a file level restore from a Windows server, which is storing data on dynamic disk.

For how long have I used the solution?

Less than one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No stability issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have not needed to scale over one box.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer support is great.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used EMC NetWorker with Data Domain.

How was the initial setup?

The setup was fairly simple.

What about the implementation team?

The vendor was there every step of the way to make sure the implementation was successful.

What was our ROI?

We are not sure yet.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Cohesity comes with the software and storage/hardware together.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated Veeam.

What other advice do I have?

Makes it easy to test backups to ensure that they are valid

Pros and Cons

  • "No longer does it take several hours to backup a VM or troubleshoot a backup issue."
  • "The dashboard is very easy to use."
  • "It is also very easy to determine which VMs are being backed up and which ones aren't. This is helpful to make sure nothing is being missed."
  • "We are waiting on the AIX agent to be released."
  • "Initial setup can be complex if you need to change IP addresses. Hopefully, they improve that in a future release."

What is our primary use case?

It is used to backup our VM environment plus the few physical servers we still have.

It is also used to replicate our backups offsite. We have used it several times to spin up a test environment. Cohesity makes it easy to test backups to ensure that they are valid.

How has it helped my organization?

It has allowed us to focus on other aspects in IT. No longer does it take several hours to backup a VM or troubleshoot a backup issue.

What is most valuable?

The dashboard is very easy to use.

It is also very easy to determine which VMs are being backed up and which ones aren't. This is helpful to make sure nothing is being missed.

What needs improvement?

We are waiting on the AIX agent to be released. We are also waiting for SQL Clustering to go from testing to live.

For how long have I used the solution?

One to three years.

How are customer service and technical support?

Support has been great. The response time has been very quick. I have even received responses on the weekend.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used EMC Data Domain and NetWorker. We switched because of cost, but also because of how hard it is to use EMC products. We do not need separate VMs with Cohesity to back up.

How was the initial setup?

Initial setup was very straightforward. It can be complex if you need to change IP addresses. Hopefully, they improve that in a future release.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented with a Cohesity engineer.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Cohesity came in at the best price. Setup was included and done in half a day.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated Rubrik as well as Veeam.

Simplified backups and cut costs tremendously

Pros and Cons

  • "Cohesity has very simple reports to help you stay in the know of which servers are being backed up or not."
  • "Cohesity has simplified backups and has cut our costs tremendously."
  • "I have found that the speed of restores, especially files and folders, are extremely fast. This bodes well for us, and our end users are always amazed at how fast you can get them their files."
  • "At times, you may click the wrong server or click too fast and accidentally restore a cluster of servers. It would be very helpful to have a cancel option under restores."

What is our primary use case?

Our firm is using it as our primary backup and restore solution. Not only do we use it to backup both VMs and physical servers, we also use it to restore them along with mounting volumes to do email/Exchange type restores.

How has it helped my organization?

Cohesity has made the pain of doing restores disappear with the ability to open recovery and select files and folders, then have the ability to type in the file or document name and have it show up. This is amazing! This cuts the restore time by 75%.

Cohesity also has very simple reports to help you stay in the know of which servers are being backed up or not.

Cohesity has simplified backups and has cut our costs tremendously.

What is most valuable?

I have found that the speed of restores, especially files and folders, are extremely fast. This bodes well for us, and our end users are always amazed at how fast you can get them their files.

This is just a huge time saver.

What needs improvement?

At times, you may click the wrong server or click too fast and accidentally restore a cluster of servers. It would be very helpful to have a cancel option under restores. I have spoken with the engineers at Cohesity and this should be rolled out with the next release.

For how long have I used the solution?

One to three years.

We can run test scripts on production data

Pros and Cons

  • "Instead of four different solutions for protecting VMs, physical servers, SQL, and NAS, we now have one solution with Cohesity that is lightning fast and has amazing features."
  • "We can run test scripts on production data."
  • "We like that we can use production data to run intensive reports that would otherwise bog down the production server."
  • "It would be great to add SQL Object Level restore, so user objects, tables, etc. can be restored without having to restore the entire DB."
  • "Their documentation could be refined."

What is our primary use case?

  • On-site disaster recovery
  • Cloud disaster recovery
  • Test and dev

Cohesity gives us unparalleled features.

How has it helped my organization?

Instead of four different solutions for protecting VMs, physical servers, SQL, and NAS, we now have one solution with Cohesity that is lightning fast and has amazing features.

What is most valuable?

SQL backup and recovery is our favorite feature.

We use it for test and dev as well, so we can run test scripts on production data. We also like that we can use production data to run intensive reports that would otherwise bog down the production server.

What needs improvement?

I can't wait for native bare metal recovery. It would also be great to add SQL Object Level restore, so user objects, tables, etc. can be restored without having to restore the entire DB.

For how long have I used the solution?

Less than one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

There were some initial issues with network setup and discovery. Also, registering MSSQL agents came up with a few errors that I had to work with support on.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No issues with scalability. Adding space or performance is as simple as adding a node to the block.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer service is amazing. Replies within the hour and resolution usually within four to six hours. Some conversations with engineering have taken up to 24 hours.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

  • VMware Data Protection
  • CrashPlan
  • Windows Backup
  • Local MSSQL backups

How was the initial setup?

Initial setup was more complex than Rubrik. Their documentation could be refined.

What about the implementation team?

Implemented in-house, worked directly with Cohesity.

What was our ROI?

The ROI is huge. Not really measurable at this point, but the price of the unit was a fraction of what a couple hours of downtime could result in.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Licensing is per node and per protected terabyte. You will also pay 10-15% annually for support.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did extensive testing with four different competitive vendors.

What other advice do I have?

If SQL is in heavy use at your location, I would highly recommend narrowing your PoC testing to Cohesity and Rubrik. They will be competitive on pricing with each other, so really put them through the paces.

Setup was extremely easy from racking to backing up was about one hour

Pros and Cons

  • "Converged system. It makes much more sense to have the backup server running on the same hardware as the storage for backup and recovery."
  • "Setup was extremely easy from racking to backing up was about one hour."
  • "Cohesity customer service is the best that I have ever used. They are extremely fast in responding to cases, fixed all issues, and answered every question in a very timely manner."
  • "Add the ability to delete View Boxes and External Targets in the GUI."

What is our primary use case?

Primary backup of our VMware environment with archiving to the cloud. By archiving to the cloud, we can cut out the need to purchase additional hardware for replication at our DR site.

How has it helped my organization?

Cohesity will reduce the complexity of our backup and recovery system. Our current system requires us to set up and maintain many proxy servers to facilitate the backups. Cohesity does not need this and out performs our current system.

What is most valuable?

Converged system. It makes much more sense to have the backup server running on the same hardware as the storage for backup and recovery. This reduces the complexity of the environment and ensures that it just works.

What needs improvement?

Add the ability to delete View Boxes and External Targets in the GUI. Currently, once you setup a View Box or External Target, there is no way to remove them (if you set these up for testing, for instance).

For how long have I used the solution?

Still implementing.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No issues.

How are customer service and technical support?

Cohesity customer service is the best that I have ever used. They are extremely fast in responding to cases, fixed all issues, and answered every question in a very timely manner.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Yes, we did. Cohesity out performs our old system at a reduced cost as well.

How was the initial setup?

It was very straightforward.

What about the implementation team?

Vendor team. The vendor's expertise was excellent. They included all the knowledge transfer that we needed to begin using the unit.

What was our ROI?

Not sure.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Setup was extremely easy from racking to backing up was about one hour.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Yes, we also evaluated Rubrik.

It offers an easy, quick backup and restore of files and VMs. Also, the "Google-like " search for files is awesome.

Pros and Cons

  • "It offers an easy, quick backup and restore of files and VMs. Also, the "Google-like " search for files is awesome."
  • "The support is awesome. They are very fast, competent and friendly."

What is our primary use case?

    • VM backup and restore
    • Physical server backup and restore
    • File restoring
    • Cloning of VMs for test and dev
    • File sharing, like NFS

How has it helped my organization?

Old backup solution: Full restore of mission critical systems took around one day.

Cohesity does this process in under one hour.

    What is most valuable?

It offers an easy, quick backup and restore of files and VMs. Also, the "Google-like " search for files is awesome.

The administration of the Cohesity is easy.

    What needs improvement?

Replication between two clusters should be included in the next few releases. There are many features which will be added in the next few releases.

For how long have I used the solution?

    Less than one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

How are customer service and technical support?

The support is awesome. They are very fast, competent and friendly.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Yes IBM TSM. We switched because of licence costs and the old fashioned style of making backups in the virtual environment with an agent-based tool.

    How was the initial setup?

    It was straightforward and easy.

    What about the implementation team?

The biggest attraction to the product is its ability to scale up with ease

    Pros and Cons

    • "The implementation and training are all done through the sales engineer, which provides for a seamless and great experience when it comes to starting with a new vendor."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case for this solution was as a backup and recovery solution, with the ability to handle VMware and a small subset of physical servers.

How has it helped my organization?

We have a rapidly expanding data set that our previous backup solution could not handle and the upgrade path was a complete redesign of hardware and when that solution maxed out, then it was the same over and over again. The biggest attraction to start looking at Cohesity was being able to scale up with ease. After discussing the option and features, it was clear that Cohesity is made to handle things quickly, simply, and with ease.

      What is most valuable?

Overall, the simplicity of the solution and the support behind implementation, training, and continued support. The implementation and training are all done through the sales engineer, which provides for a seamless and great experience when it comes to starting with a new vendor.

      What needs improvement?

The one drawback of this quick innovation is that their units were shipped with outdated firmware, but this was quickly remedied, and they have made operational changes to reduce the likelihood of sending outdated firmware again.

For how long have I used the solution?

      Less than one year.

Extremely reduces the effort in daily backup and restore tasks

What is our primary use case?

The primary use case for the solution is VM backup/restore, physical server backup, and file restore. Also, clone VMs for test and dev environments and file sharing.

      What is most valuable?

The absolutely top feature is the easy and fast backup and restore of VMs. It extremely reduces the effort in daily backup and restore tasks. Leading to no more effort for administration of a complex backed up and restored infrastructure.

How has it helped my organization?

      • Restore of a mission critical host with legacy backup solution: minimum one day.
      • Restore of a mission critical host with Cohesity: less than 1 hour.

      What needs improvement?

Replication between two Cohesity clusters should be be improved in the next releases. Some workflows in the GUI should also be improved within next releases. Support for more vendors (databases) should also be delivered within the next releases.

For how long have I used the solution?

Yes we did but it could not backup complete environment, multiple systems.

Very straightforward, simple console, I don't need a ton of options to backup data.

      What about the implementation team?

We purchased though Intergris (http://thinkintegris.com/); they did a great job providing us this solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Has the ability to add nodes on the fly to increase storage needs.

      What is most valuable?

      • It just works.
      • Backup times are very fast.
      • The UI makes sense, it is responsive, and it is easy to setup jobs.
      • The ability to add nodes on the fly to increase storage needs is invaluable.
      • You get a product engineer to set up the appliance with you and they continue to follow-up with you, making sure to answer all of your questions.

How has it helped my organization?

      • Because of the excellent data reduction, we are able to back up all of our systems for the first time and use less space than our old backup appliance.
      • We always have current backups; our old system would sometimes take days to back up larger systems.

      What needs improvement?

      • Cannot exclude certain drives from VMs.
      • Cannot back up just directories.
      • You have to reboot physical servers after installing the backup agent BUT this is because of the CBT driver that it installs. I totally understand the need, but I figure it is worth pointing out.
      • Only archive options are to the cloud or tape; would like to have a disk option.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used it for a month.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

We had an issue backing up a large VM with a crazy configuration the second time, but support quickly adjusted a setting and it has been working flawless ever since.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

      It has been rock solid!

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used to use Unitrends and wanted to get away from the following issues:

      • Slow backup times
      • Jobs randomly failing
      • Poor and unresponsive UI
      • Forklift upgrades (space issues)

Cohesity was able to resolve all of the above issues, no problem.

      How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very quick and easy. We had an engineer on site to answer any questions that popped up during first-time configuration.

      What about the implementation team?

The vendor came on site, set up the appliance and worked with us to answer any questions we had.
