Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The image backup and image restore features have been very beneficial to us.""It actually does its job very well and has interesting capabilities, but it has the most awful interface.""The main reasons that our customers like Acronis are that it is very strong and easy to use.""Acronis Backup is easy to use.""For my first experience, it is the best software for backups, especially for a five-system backup.""The backup timing and restoring process is great compared to other options.""The solution was easy to install and to deploy.""It's always stable. It's very good, useful, and user-friendly."

"Centralization is Avamar's biggest advantage. It moves data to a central location from various geographical locations.""I like Dell EMC Avamar's compression of data.""It works quickly and is very stable.""The deduplication feature is the best aspect of the solution.""Avamar's source side deduplication is very strong, it can easily back up remote sites' data, and not much bandwidth is required on the Avamar side.""The solution is very stable.""The most valuable feature of Avamar would have to be the way it works over needing very little bandwidth to move data across a WAN or LAN.""The most valuable features are scalability and integration."

Cons
"The problems that we face are often related to the customer's network, although sometimes there are problems with the software, such as an error in the configuration.""When an error occurs, the information is not always easy to understand and these messages should be made more clear.""The whole product structure is confusing. You can actually get to do what you want to do. But Acronis seems to have a singular ability to make things difficult.""One improvement that could be made is adding the option to download files in a PST format when doing a 365 or Google Cloud to cloud backup.""Acronis Backup isn't scalable at all.""For smaller companies it's a little more challenging to maintain.""When you are using enterprise hardware and software that increases over time, there need to be better and more management features. For pure backup software, it is fine, but when it comes to managing a large infrastructure it is lacking.""It would be nice to have a partition that I can boot and reinstall when taking a backup image from the operating system."

"When you get down to doing certain things, such as somebody wants a particular file restored, the process by which you do that is stupid. You kind of have to know exactly where to look for in order to find it. Even on older backup products that I've used, I didn't have that kind of problem. If we were looking for a file with a particular kind of a name, the solution would find that file anywhere irrespective of where it resides within the backup system. So, we didn't have to know the name of the specific server, the specific timeframe, almost all the characters of the file name, and all kinds of data in order to find a file. In Avamar, we got to know these details. We've gone around and around with them on that, and their attitude seems to be that it is working just fine. There is nothing for them to improve. The organizational system of other products that I'm working with, such as Zerto and Cohesity, seems to be centered around the tasks that you would most commonly do and want to do, as opposed to we've laid it out in a really neat technical hierarchy.""It would be better if we could integrate easily with other platforms.""The interface has room for improvement. It's not ideal right now.""The solution should improve its tape-connectivity features.""The management of this solution is a little bit difficult for IT administrators. They have to be trained before going through the system.""The solution is not very strong on the Cloud. They should work out how they can use this as a backup as a service.""It would be helpful if the product offered more integration potential.""The screen design is a bit back-dated."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The pricing is comparable to the newest solution available on the market, Altaro."
  • "The cost of updates is less than $100 USD yearly."
  • "It is very cost-effective for the SMB segment, especially for start-ups and smaller environments. It is cost-effective for on-premises and on-cloud deployments in such environments."
  • "This is an affordable product and fits within our customers' budgets."
  • "Licensing fees are billed annually and there are no extra charges."
  • "The price of the solution is expensive and could be reduced a little."
  • "You pay for what you use in the cloud. If you don't start the virtual machine in the cloud, you only pay for the information stored there. But when you start the virtual machine, another pricing model is activated."
  • "We have a Cyber Cloud backup license and we have on-premises storage. Both can be useful for our customers."

  • "It was approximately $70-80,000 when it was under support, but right now EMC has not been supporting this product for two years."
  • "Licensing was generally on a per VM or terabyte basis. They changed their licensing model a couple of times and turned it into socket-based licensing, which is an improvement in their licensing model."
  • "When it comes to competition the price is not what is important, it's not the problem."
  • "The price of this product should be lower."
  • "It was very expensive before, but after integrating it with Dell EMC Avamar Data Protection suite licensing, we are getting better discounts."
  • "The cost of the solution is very expensive."
  • "Its price should be reduced. It would be good if you could pay as per usage, and there is a subscription model like VMware. There should be some flexibility because sometimes, the customer only uses the backup for one month or three months. Currently, I have to pay whether I use it or not. Its licensing should be flexible and based on consumption."
  • "Its licensing is weird. It is not just the licenses; we also purchase hardware. With most software products, such as Veeam, Commvault, and Data Protector, there is no hardware purchase at the same time. Because Avamar and Data Domain are tied together, they have an integrated pipe. You can separate them, but basically, they're designed to work as a couple. Because the Data Domain backend is designed to do dedupe and compression, we get 60:1. When you count it, you count it as a straight compression, but of course, that's with dedupe and some other stuff. You have to buy the hardware, the licensing, and the software at the same time. So, it's not just software."
