We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Some of the valuable features I have found to be the virtual server is easy to understand, a secure environment, and AWS has a fast community for finding solutions to problems you might be facing.""Amazon AWS has many merits, in terms of scalability, stability, and availability. I have loved using this tool.""The features that I have found most valuable are its cloud storage and compute services.""It's very easy to use.""Technical support is quite helpful.""Machine learning is a valuable feature.""It's very stable and the performance is good.""The technical support is good."

"The stability is the solution's most valuable aspect for our organization.""The ELT versus ETL extract, transform and load versus extract, load, and then transform, the ELT method is what really sells SoftLayer."

Cons
"While AWS often is at the top of my list to recommend to people, I always have to tell them, "Hey, you got to be careful because if they don't like you, they can shut you down in a heartbeat. And they can kill an entire company by doing that."""The price could be better. Support for data analytics could be better. I don't see much support for data analytics. They have a lot of support in Azure, but I don't see a lot of innovation on the data analytics side in AWS.""The pricing of AWS is very unclear. They make it quite confusing.""Monitoring still needs to be improved.""Amazon AWS could improve by being more secure and adding more features.""We don't know whether to increase server capacity or alert notifications. We don't know which hard disc to purchase or what the next recommended CPU is. There should be an indicator. We would like to have more guidance.""Could be more user friendly and include additional applications.""There is a bit of a learning curve. That said, it's likely no different than learning any other cloud."

"The interface is hard to use for us. It should be simplified.""For us, the versioning was an issue."

  • "The price could be lower."
  • "There are many variables involved in pricing service in AWS and overall the pricing is a bit on the higher side."
  • "AWS is not an expensive product."

    Overview

Amazon Web Services (AWS), is a collection of cloud computing services, also called web services, that make up a cloud-computing platform offered by Amazon.com. These services operate from 12 geographical regions across the world. The most central and well-known of these services arguably include Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, also known as "EC2", and Amazon Simple Storage Service, also known as "S3". Amazon markets AWS as a service to provide large computing capacity more quickly and more cheaply than a client company building an actual physical server farm.

SoftLayer provides cloud infrastructure as a service from a growing number of data centers and network points of presence around the world. Our customers range from Web startups to global enterprises.

Products and services include bare metal and virtual servers, networking, turnkey big data solutions, private cloud solutions, and more. Our unique advantages include the industry's first Network-Within-a-Network topology for true out-of-band access, and an easy-to-use customer portal and robust API for full remote-access of all product and service management options.
