Quotes From Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
"It works great and it provides you with several standard tools to restore your backup, even after a big failure.""Bacula is pretty stable.""The most valuable features are the special plugins such as SAP HANA databases, Microsoft SQL, and various types of virtualization."

More Bacula Enterprise Pros »

"The multi-tenancy is the most valuable feature for us because it's the only software that is fully multi-tenant and that has all the features we need to provide to all our tenants. It provides us with advanced features for MySQL and Oracle, among other platforms""The backup and restore capabilities are key. The most useful things to us about Commvault, in general, is the breadth of the applications that it can protect as well as the features inside of it, like deduplication and encryption. When people get their data encrypted, Commvault has a way to tell if somebody is being attacked through a cybersecurity threat because their data changes. So, Commvault has what they call honeypot files out there to look to see if anybody is changing these files. Only Commvault knows which files those are, so nobody should be messing with those files. If it changes, then it will alert you to say, "Oh, I potentially have somebody messing with my files." It will alert you to something going on in your environment that probably shouldn't be happening. We deploy that with all our customers so they have this capability as well.""All workloads can be integrated with Commvault. If we use a new technology, Commvault integrates with it. Commvault is a data management solution with support for building the DR side of things. With Commvault we can rapidly back up and restore any application we add to our environment.""We have VMware, Hyper-V, Oracle, and Microsoft SQL. We have a lot of different systems, and all of them are supported under one licensing agreement. That's one of the benefits.""Commvault has support for backing up operating systems and servers.""Commvault software is a single platform where you can enable whatever you want to use, like endpoint protection. You can enable those licenses on a single platform screen. This is where I see the value ad. This is a single management tool.""The initial setup is straightforward.""When an interruption takes place due to an incident, the signaling and notification are very extensive."

Cons
"Easier setup and configuration, perhaps including a GUI, would be an improvement.""We are looking for a unique interface that can rule both enterprise and open source editions. Such a thing does not yet exist.""Bacula needs a graphical user interface because, for administrators, the command-line interface is okay, but for the average user it is not very easy."

More Bacula Enterprise Cons »

"It does not have an easy deployment. The deployment is not something that just anybody can go in and deploy.""One issue we face is the complexity of the console. That could be improved on. It takes users time to get familiar with Commvault. On average, it takes our customers between one and three months to learn it. The console and the way you configure Commvault have very advanced settings. It takes time to understand how it works.""Suppose I am restoring a particular file. If I want to restore the permissions only from that particular folder, that is not possible. I have to restore all the data for that particular folder. If there was an option to just restore the permissions, that would be better.""Command Center definitely gives us a complete view of our data. But finding some of the granular, very small items that we sometimes have to find, such as auxiliary copies for tapes, I still find that it's easier to navigate and, sometimes, only possible to find them using the CommCell tool.""We get an alarm if a lot of files are deleted, for example. That could look like ransomware, even if it is not.""We've run into some issues when attempting to restore very large numbers of files. Of course, that's more of a design issue.""I would like them to keep working on the new web interface to migrate out of the old interface because the old interface is a bit complex. It was driving customers away because of the complexity. If they migrate everything (100 percent of the features), this would make the product be perfect.""They don't market their products well. They don't do a lot of marketing to enable them to move forward."

Pricing and Cost Advice
"We have a perpetual license.""This is an open-source solution."

More Bacula Enterprise Pricing and Cost Advice »

"The pricing has improved. It is simplified compared to the way that it was a few years ago. It is fairly straightforward and pretty easy to articulate to customers, which is handy.""It would not be affordable for small to medium size organizations.""It was not very popular because of its previous cost, but they have been working on the pricing, and now anyone can afford to use Commvault. They changed the modeling criteria for their pricing. Previously, there was only the capacity modeling based on your content capacity. In this case, they would give you a license and you would have to pay it. Now, most of the environment is virtualized so you can have the best CPU, VMs, etc. You buy whatever you need and pay for what you need.""It is cheaper than NetBackup, but its price can be lower. If a good solution can be cheaper, it is always an advantage. Its licensing is on a yearly basis.""In India, this is a very expensive product.""Our cost is around $20,000 per month. The previous year, it was around $30,000 per month. It now costs less because Commvault changed the licensing type for providers.""Licensing fees are billed on a yearly basis.""There is a bit of cost involved with signing up the entire solution. It's not a cheap solution."
