We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
"There are no issues that we are aware of. It does its job silently in the background.""If you compare the ASA and the FirePOWER, the best feature with FirePOWER is easy to use GUI. It has most of the same functionality in the Next-Generation FirePOWER, such as IPS, IPS policies, security intelligence, and integration and identification of all the devices or hardware you have in your network. Additionally, this solution is user-friendly.""The integration of network and workload micro-segmentation helps a lot to provide unified segmentation policies across east-west and north-south traffic. One concrete example is with Cisco ACI for the data center. Not only are we doing what is called a service graph on the ACI to make sure that we can filter traffic east-west between two endpoints in the same network, but when we go north-south or east-west, we can then leverage what we have on the network with SGTs on Cisco ISE. Once you build your matrix, it is very easy to filter in and out on east-west or north-south traffic.""A good intrusion prevention system and filtering.""When it comes to the integration among Cisco tools, we find it easy. It's a very practical integration with other components as well.""The most valuable feature that Cisco Firepower NGFW provides for us is the Intrusion policy.""The dashboard is the most important thing. It provides good visibility and makes management easy. Firepower also provides us with good application visibility and control.""Another benefit has been user integration. We try to integrate our policies so that we can create policies based on active users. We can create policies based on who is accessing a resource instead of just IP addresses and ports."

"Cisco has always been a premium product. There's a lot of other entry-level solutions. This is more robust.""The technical is excellent.""Completely integrates branch offices with perimeter security.""One of the valuable features of the solution is its flexibility and it performs great.""We are able to filter a lot of traffic especially when a lot of the traffic is in layer 7.""The hardware is pretty stable. It's also a very good product performance-wise. Initially, it wasn't mature like a firewall and there were other leaders, but now they have included almost all the features of next-generation security. Basically, it's a good product to work with.""The capabilities for scalability with this product are huge""The solution is very user-friendly and easy to deal with."

"Using this product makes the VPN seamless and almost invisible to me in the sense that I don't have to think about it.""There are lots of features and most of them are deployed for internet security. Users are protected if they accidentally go to some malicious sites.""The solution has very good threat and content filtering switches.""We have found it to be very reliable and that's why our teams and various users in our company use it as our main firewall every day.""The solution is stable.""What's most important is the ease of use.""The initial setup is straightforward.""The usage in general is pretty good."

Cons
"The central management tool is not comfortable to use. You need to have a specific skill set. This is an important improvement for management because I would like to log into Firepower, see the dashboard, and generate a real-time report, then I question my team.""Report generation is an area that should be improved.""The price and SD-WAN capabilities are the areas that need improvement.""The initial setup could be simplified, as it can be complex for new users.""The change-deployment time can always be improved. Even at 50 seconds, it's longer than some of its competitors. I would challenge Cisco to continue to improve in that area.""Implementations require the use of a console. It would help if the console was embedded.""One issue with Firepower Management Center is deployment time. It takes seven to 10 minutes and that's a long time for deployment. In that amount of time, management or someone else can ask me to change something or to provide permissions, but during that time, doing so is not possible. It's a drawback with Cisco. Other vendors, like Palo Alto or Fortinet do not have this deployment time issue.""We're getting support but there's a big delay until we get a response from their technical team. They're in the USA and we're in Africa, so that's the difficulty. When they're in the office, they respond."

More Cisco Firepower NGFW Firewall Cons »

"With respect to user-friendliness, it is a command-line interface and those with such experience will get along just fine, whereas others may struggle.""The configuration should be easier in the solution.""Signatures and other critical definitions need to be updated more frequently.""There could be a bit more functions on offer that could make it easier to use.""I think they should bring back remote VPN for users.""The pricing is the only con for this product.""It would be ideal if the solution had more capacity.""I would love it if it has a link-by-link feature, integration with Unified Threat Management (UTM), and load balancers. They haven't got any link-by-link feature right now, which can be a very attractive option. This link-by-link feature can also be made available for Cisco's UTM firewalls. The link-by-link feature is available in some of the other firewalls. Currently, integration with UTM is missing. Cisco IOS Security also doesn't have the load balancers and a few things that need to be done to get a good UTM firewall. Normally, other firewalls have UTM. As a next-generation firewall, it's good, but as a UTM, it has to do some work."

More Cisco IOS Security Cons »

"The solution needs to improve its integration with cybersecurity.""In the next release, maybe the documentation on how to use this solution could be improved.""It should have a better pricing plan. It is too expensive. It should also have a more granular view of the attack. I don't have FortiAnalyzer, and it is difficult for me to have a complete view when there is an attack on my server.""The command line is complicated, and the interface could be better.""Sometimes you do need to know some CLI commands, so it's a bit harder for technicians or new people that don't know it.""There are some cloud-based features that could be much more flexible than they currently are.""In the balance between links feature normally you can just choose one option to balance. It would be better for the solution to have more than one option, preferably three.""The solution could be more user friendly."

Pricing and Cost Advice
"Cisco pricing is premium. However, they gave us a 50 to 60 percent discount.""I like the Smart Licensing, because it is more dynamic and easier to keep track of where you are at. If we have a high availability firewall pair and they are deployed in active/standby rather than active/active, I would expect that we would only pay for one set of licenses because you are using only one firewall at any one time. The other is there just for resiliency. The licensing, from a Firepower perspective, still requires you to have two licenses, even if the firewalls are in active/standby, which means that you pay for the two licenses, even though you might only be using one firewall any one time. This is probably not the best way to do it and doesn't represent the best value for money. This could be looked at to see if it could be done in a fairer way.""For me, personally, as an individual, Cisco Firepower NGFW Firewall is expensive.""When we purchased the firewall, we had to take the security license for IPS, malware protection, and VPN. If we are using high availability, we have to take a license for that. We also have to pay for hardware support and technical support. Its licensing is on a yearly basis.""It definitely competes with the other vendors in the market.""The price of Firepower is not bad compared to other products.""Cisco, as we all know, is expensive, but for the money you are paying, you know that you are also getting top-notch documentation as well as support if needed.""Its price is in the middle range. Both Firepower and FortiGate are not cheap. Palo Alto and Check Point are the cheapest ones. I don't remember any costs in addition to the standard licensing fees."

"Price is certainly something that the IOS technology has fallen behind the competition on.""The price of the solution should be cheaper, and the license is purchase annually.""The pricing is okay. It is competitive. It costs more when you need get more features.""It is an expensive solution.""Palo Alto networks are more expensive than this solution and this is why you will see more products like this one in Mexico.""It is necessary to pay for a license in order to use the solution. It is on a yearly basis and the price is high."

"The price of the license and warranty can be better because it is very expensive.""The pricing for the product is alright.""Pricing and licensing is a little bit complicated in FortiGate. They are always on the higher side. This is one issue that we always raise with the company that they should reduce the price according to Indian market requirements. There are no costs in addition to the standard licensing fees.""Fortinet FortiGate's price can be reduced.""It's very affordable.""When you look at these end security systems and firewalls, these firewalls even five years ago were $50,000 or perhaps $25,000 to implement in some types of customer sites. Now we're talking about tools that are $1,000. In this case, it might have been $500 or something like that.""The licensing costs are very low.""It is too expensive for us. My organization is very small, and we have a total of ten users. We have three internal users and seven external users. The FortiGate 100D series is too expensive for renewing the licenses."
