Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"I like Dell EMC Avamar's compression of data.""Dell EMC Avamar is very good with endpoint backups.""The solution is easy to use and has high performance.""The stability is okay.""We have seen huge data reduction and data deduplication and compression, which is very cost-effective and cost-reducing for the company.""The data reduction feature and the ease of enabling a server in a DR location are the most valuable.""The installation process is pretty straightforward.""The most valuable features are scalability and integration."

"It generates very detailed reports, which makes things easier when it comes to IT auditing.""The solution is easy to use, flexible and has a lot of out-of-the-box functionality. You can configure the dashboards or you can use a script. However, to fully utilize its capabilities you will want to use a lot of scripts which you will need advanced training. The reports can be customized for many things, such as chargeback billing.""It has a lot of stock reports. I believe over 300 canned reports, which for the most part meet a lot of generic needs.""The initial setup is very straightforward. Deployment typically takes about one hour. You just need one person to handle the deployment process."

Cons
"The solution, in the future, should offer support for mobile.""It's an expensive solution.""More integration would be helpful, as well as the addition of more applications.""Avamar needs a greater emphasis on storage targets. If it's going to keep pace with the times, it needs more ability to leverage cloud storage.""Compared with Cohesity or Rubrik, which have some continuous data protection for backup and replication, this solution tends to lack in this area.""When we used the solution, it was still new, and so the customer service/technical support was not the best.""The solution is not very strong on the Cloud. They should work out how they can use this as a backup as a service.""Avamar is dependent on the hardware. It can't be implemented with ordinary storage. It can only be implemented with an EMC product. We want to have a backup solution that allows us to use independent storage and other hardware. It would be good if they can simplify its technology and make it possible to implement it with another storage. This is probably not possible because Avamar is an EMC product, and EMC would like to sell its own products."

More Dell EMC Avamar Cons →

"It's a bit difficult for first-time users.""Customization of reports or creating new reports can be difficult. Users need to have a deep knowledge of SQL. 70-80% of customers can't seem to understand how to do it. They don't know how to address reporting. If Dell EMC could simplify it, it would benefit the end-user.""There is a steep learning curve to use the interface and to create new reports, this could be made easier. If the solution could provide more drag and drop functionality to build more advanced reports that would be very helpful.""They should empower their customers with the ability to upgrade this solution as long as it's in the same major release."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "It was approximately $70-80,000 when it was under support, but right now EMC has not been supporting this product for two years."
  • "Licensing was generally on a per VM or terabyte basis. They changed their licensing model a couple of times and turned it into socket-based licensing, which is an improvement in their licensing model."
  • "When it comes to competition the price is not what is important, it's not the problem."
  • "The price of this product should be lower."
  • "It was very expensive before, but after integrating it with Dell EMC Avamar Data Protection suite licensing, we are getting better discounts."
  • "The cost of the solution is very expensive."
  • "Its price should be reduced. It would be good if you could pay as per usage, and there is a subscription model like VMware. There should be some flexibility because sometimes, the customer only uses the backup for one month or three months. Currently, I have to pay whether I use it or not. Its licensing should be flexible and based on consumption."
  • "Its licensing is weird. It is not just the licenses; we also purchase hardware. With most software products, such as Veeam, Commvault, and Data Protector, there is no hardware purchase at the same time. Because Avamar and Data Domain are tied together, they have an integrated pipe. You can separate them, but basically, they're designed to work as a couple. Because the Data Domain backend is designed to do dedupe and compression, we get 60:1. When you count it, you count it as a straight compression, but of course, that's with dedupe and some other stuff. You have to buy the hardware, the licensing, and the software at the same time. So, it's not just software."

  • "It's not very expensive — I think the price is fair."
  • "You have to procure the license when you are ordering or quoting for Dell Data Protection Suite (DPS). DPS is bundled with the suite and comes with a license. However, if you purchase NetWorker separately then you will have to procure the license for DPS separately."
