We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most valuable features are scalability and integration.""The data reduction feature and the ease of enabling a server in a DR location are the most valuable.""Dell EMC Avamar has many valuable features. It's very stable and it's easy to manage.""The most valuable features are image backups and file backups.""It's a good solution.""The product is very powerful and offers very good performance.""The product has a proven track record of good backups without much of a failure ratio. It also has a good backup in terms of the compression ratio.""Effective in protecting the virtualization system and end points."

"The backup is very good. In other backup systems, you need a lot of storage to gain the same backup policy.""The customization and the ability to backup across all platforms are the most valuable features.""It is a very good and mature enterprise product. Once it is set up and everything is put in, you don't have to manage it. It actually runs automatically by itself.""We've found the product to be quite stable and the performance is very good.""The most valuable feature of this solution is the centralized enterprise backup.""In the past, one of the most valuable features, and the biggest advantage, was the incremental forever feature. Not many other backup vendors provided that. In the pre-virtualization environment, it was very robust and simple technology, especially writing to tape.""The feature that I have found the most valuable is that IBM Spectrum Protect is highly integrated with IBM ESS. In addition, it allows us to back up our virtual servers directly to take VM snapshots. It runs on Linux as well.""IBM support is friendly, knowledgeable, and they always respond quickly. They've always been able to find the cause of my problem."

Cons
"Avamar is dependent on the hardware. It can't be implemented with ordinary storage. It can only be implemented with an EMC product. We want to have a backup solution that allows us to use independent storage and other hardware. It would be good if they can simplify its technology and make it possible to implement it with another storage. This is probably not possible because Avamar is an EMC product, and EMC would like to sell its own products.""If you need to pull data out of it to offload to tapes, that's messy. You have a mechanism for it, but it is painful.""It's an expensive solution.""The management of this solution is a little bit difficult for IT administrators. They have to be trained before going through the system.""Avamar needs a greater emphasis on storage targets. If it's going to keep pace with the times, it needs more ability to leverage cloud storage.""A benefit would be support for either Azure Cool Storage or AWS Glacier.""The UI is not easy to use. There are other products such as Veeam that are easy to use for the end-user which is why they are moving away from Avamar or Networker.""The user interface still needs to have some level of improvement. It could be more user-friendly and intuitive."

More Dell EMC Avamar Cons →

"They can include more cloud-enriching features. I would like IBM Spectrum Protect to have the functionality for backing up a VM directly in Azure. I would like to be able to back up a VM directly in Azure without spinning up a Hyper-V cluster and backing up the virtual server.""In a future release, it would be a benefit to have the ability to add an application as a storage target, as a storage pool. Additionally, they should add more functionality to the administration for the Operation Center.""Although I am not a technical user, I would say the cloud integration features could be improved.""This product comes up against other products available that are marketed better but the other products that it's in competition with are a single product and this is one of IBM products. If it could be marketed as more for competitors I think that's where it comes short.""The solution could be more user-friendly and provide better monitoring. The monitoring should be improved first since it is a higher priority.""It can be improved for large file systems with many files. Spectrum Protect can restore large files very well, but if you're restoring millions of little files, it is not as great. At one point, we tried to implement the VMware module with it, and it was awful and terrible. I don't know if that has improved. If it hasn't, this would be one big improvement.""It would be helpful if the solution included some sort of ransomware protection.""The main admin console from the UI cannot do anything in the product. It just allows us to maintain, maybe, 30% to 40%. For the rest, we have to use the command line."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "It was approximately $70-80,000 when it was under support, but right now EMC has not been supporting this product for two years."
  • "Licensing was generally on a per VM or terabyte basis. They changed their licensing model a couple of times and turned it into socket-based licensing, which is an improvement in their licensing model."
  • "When it comes to competition the price is not what is important, it's not the problem."
  • "The price of this product should be lower."
  • "It was very expensive before, but after integrating it with Dell EMC Avamar Data Protection suite licensing, we are getting better discounts."
  • "The cost of the solution is very expensive."
  • "Its price should be reduced. It would be good if you could pay as per usage, and there is a subscription model like VMware. There should be some flexibility because sometimes, the customer only uses the backup for one month or three months. Currently, I have to pay whether I use it or not. Its licensing should be flexible and based on consumption."
  • "Its licensing is weird. It is not just the licenses; we also purchase hardware. With most software products, such as Veeam, Commvault, and Data Protector, there is no hardware purchase at the same time. Because Avamar and Data Domain are tied together, they have an integrated pipe. You can separate them, but basically, they're designed to work as a couple. Because the Data Domain backend is designed to do dedupe and compression, we get 60:1. When you count it, you count it as a straight compression, but of course, that's with dedupe and some other stuff. You have to buy the hardware, the licensing, and the software at the same time. So, it's not just software."

  • "The licensing fees are between $8,000 and $10,000 per year."
  • "IBM provides an open license policy, which is more like a gentlemen's agreement."
  • "One can go with either a PVU licensing model or a capacity based licensing model. Either solution does not block the usage, if over used."
  • "It is fairly reasonable as compared to other solutions in the market."
  • "We have capacity licensing. We use the front end. The capacity licensing is pretty okay on the licensing price. I used to use the old PVU-based licensing in the early environment, but now we use capacity-based licensing."
  • "It is really expensive. Its price is not good for Latin America. Its price is good for the United States or Europe."
  • "It is expensive."
  • "The solution is expensive."
