Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"I have found the product to be scalable.""The stability is okay.""The deduplication feature is the best aspect of the solution.""The product is very powerful and offers very good performance.""We are talking about a complete end-to-end solution which comes with its own hardware storage to back up the data on tape-less.""The solution is easy to use and has high performance.""The backup and recovery speed is very fast.""Dell EMC Avamar is very good with endpoint backups."

"The solution is quite stable. We haven't experienced any bugs, glitches, or crashes. We find it to be quite reliable.""We have found the replication feature the most useful. We use this feature the most. The ability to recover a database with less effort and the use of Oracle Data Guard Broker to administer the complete environment are also very useful features.""The solution can scale as needed.""One of the most valuable features is real-time replication. The version we're using is reliable and easy to deploy.""It's a very good solution if you want to protect your data across two data centers, or you have a middle man or many administrators who use these solutions for protecting their data. It's very reliable compared to other solutions that are most often not storage-based.""We use Data Guard for online replication from data center, to data center for high availability. This is the most important feature."

Cons
"There also needs to be single sign-on support.""It would be helpful if the product offered more integration potential.""The management of this solution is a little bit difficult for IT administrators. They have to be trained before going through the system.""The solution should improve its tape-connectivity features.""The interface has room for improvement. It's not ideal right now.""It is very scalable, and that's its claim to fame, but that also makes it hard to make changes. Anytime there is a large piece of software, changing that piece of software is harder. You've got a larger install base, so you can't just rapidly change. We also use another product called Veeam, and it has this new feature called Continuous Data Protection, which basically lets you get very close to the way the system was in time. We have a system or two up there on which we have set 10 minutes Continuous Data Protection. So, we can roll it back to whatever it was 10 minutes ago, 20 minutes ago, or 30 minutes ago. This feature doesn't exist in Avamar Data Domain. That's the one feature I'd like to see first.""More integration would be helpful, as well as the addition of more applications.""The screen design is a bit back-dated."

"One thing that can be improved is the GUI. It would be good to have a very nice GUI to easily configure and administer, providing different presentations to the database administrator. The feature that can be included is the integration with third-party monitoring systems, that is, monitoring systems from other vendors, not only from Oracle.""The pricing of the solution is quite high. They should do what they can to bring it down so that it is more reasonable for customers like us.""Overall, there are some operational issues that need to be dealt with.""Oracle could be improved by the ability to manage it on the cloud. This on-premises version is secure and reliable, but I'm sure that they will soon provide a cloud solution that will be even better. In one to two years, we will probably move to the cloud—we have already moved to the cloud with Microsoft Exchange, but our databases are still on-premises. I would prefer managing a cloud version of Oracle.""It is a very useful administrative IT tool. It saves on costs.""The IP implementation and maintenance are a little bit hard to manage across Oracle solutions, including Oracle Data Guard."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "It was approximately $70-80,000 when it was under support, but right now EMC has not been supporting this product for two years."
  • "Licensing was generally on a per VM or terabyte basis. They changed their licensing model a couple of times and turned it into socket-based licensing, which is an improvement in their licensing model."
  • "When it comes to competition the price is not what is important, it's not the problem."
  • "The price of this product should be lower."
  • "It was very expensive before, but after integrating it with Dell EMC Avamar Data Protection suite licensing, we are getting better discounts."
  • "The cost of the solution is very expensive."
  • "Its price should be reduced. It would be good if you could pay as per usage, and there is a subscription model like VMware. There should be some flexibility because sometimes, the customer only uses the backup for one month or three months. Currently, I have to pay whether I use it or not. Its licensing should be flexible and based on consumption."
  • "Its licensing is weird. It is not just the licenses; we also purchase hardware. With most software products, such as Veeam, Commvault, and Data Protector, there is no hardware purchase at the same time. Because Avamar and Data Domain are tied together, they have an integrated pipe. You can separate them, but basically, they're designed to work as a couple. Because the Data Domain backend is designed to do dedupe and compression, we get 60:1. When you count it, you count it as a straight compression, but of course, that's with dedupe and some other stuff. You have to buy the hardware, the licensing, and the software at the same time. So, it's not just software."
