We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Every product is good and bad, but its claim to fame is that it is scalable. We're doing more than 3,000 VMs. Every single night a complete image backup to disks and replication are easily done in under four hours.""The installation process is pretty straightforward.""We are talking about a complete end-to-end solution which comes with its own hardware storage to back up the data on tape-less.""The solution integrates well with Unix, Windows, Hyper-V and VM.""Avamar's source side deduplication is very strong, it can easily back up remote sites' data, and not much bandwidth is required on the Avamar side.""The solution is very stable.""Quick incremental backups and product replication are the two highlights of the product. Once you capture a full backup, incrementals are pretty quick. It is fairly efficient from that perspective.""The stability is okay."

"It is way easier to take backup with Veeam Backup & Replication than the regular ones.""One of the best things about Veeam is that they have consistently improved on themselves since they started. Personally, I've been using Veeam since around 2013/2014 when it was only supporting certain hypervisors such as HyperV, and since then it has become truly mature enterprise-level software with a lot of versatility.""Very user-friendly and easily recoverable.""The setup was straightforward Veeam Backup Replication. NetBackup is a larger solution and takes more time to implement but Veeam Backup Replication takes approximately 40 days.""It's very easy to work with and it's very reliable.""The initial setup was very easy.""It's relatively easy to use and the ability to recover in a short period of time has been great.""In Veeam backup, the most valuable feature for me is the recovery. It allows me to recover almost immediately while I continue fixing the problem of the affected machine."

Cons
"The screen design is a bit back-dated.""More integration would be helpful, as well as the addition of more applications.""It would be helpful if the product offered more integration potential.""The UI is not easy to use. There are other products such as Veeam that are easy to use for the end-user which is why they are moving away from Avamar or Networker.""When you get down to doing certain things, such as somebody wants a particular file restored, the process by which you do that is stupid. You kind of have to know exactly where to look for in order to find it. Even on older backup products that I've used, I didn't have that kind of problem. If we were looking for a file with a particular kind of a name, the solution would find that file anywhere irrespective of where it resides within the backup system. So, we didn't have to know the name of the specific server, the specific timeframe, almost all the characters of the file name, and all kinds of data in order to find a file. In Avamar, we got to know these details. We've gone around and around with them on that, and their attitude seems to be that it is working just fine. There is nothing for them to improve. The organizational system of other products that I'm working with, such as Zerto and Cohesity, seems to be centered around the tasks that you would most commonly do and want to do, as opposed to we've laid it out in a really neat technical hierarchy.""The solution could be a bit easier to use in the sense that they need to make it simpler to backup products and restore items.""Compared with Cohesity or Rubrik, which have some continuous data protection for backup and replication, this solution tends to lack in this area.""The user interface needs to be improved. It's not as good as it could be."

More Dell EMC Avamar Cons →

"The replication functionality only works for VMware environments. Veeam has a backup agent for AIX operating systems, and we will like to see the replication functionality available for the AIX operating system. Additionally, if the backup functionality for AIX to be included in the Veeam console would be an advantage.""Additional executive summary reports for the entire infrastructure would be a nice to have.""The initial setup could be simplified.""There are certain solutions, such as Rubrik and Cohesity, that are little by little, taking market share. Veeam needs to be more aggressive to keep their dominance in the space.""Veeam Backup & Replication should include a cloud solution.""They need to improve their technical side.""In terms of what could be improved, when creating a backup job with Veeam, you can create a daily backup, but it doesn't do it within that job. It does not give you the ability to also set the terms for monthly and/or weekly backups. It has to be a separate job. It gets clunky to manage the timeframes where you don't want a daily to run on this day and creating weeklies. And you don't want a daily to run on this day doing monthlies. That is hard to deal with. It would be really nice if you could do it through a single command line or a single interface.""Restoration takes about two to four hours with Veeam. Zerto can restore in about 10 seconds. That's the restoration speed I'm looking for now that we're dealing with ransomware."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "It was approximately $70-80,000 when it was under support, but right now EMC has not been supporting this product for two years."
  • "Licensing was generally on a per VM or terabyte basis. They changed their licensing model a couple of times and turned it into socket-based licensing, which is an improvement in their licensing model."
  • "When it comes to competition the price is not what is important, it's not the problem."
  • "The price of this product should be lower."
  • "It was very expensive before, but after integrating it with Dell EMC Avamar Data Protection suite licensing, we are getting better discounts."
  • "The cost of the solution is very expensive."
  • "Its price should be reduced. It would be good if you could pay as per usage, and there is a subscription model like VMware. There should be some flexibility because sometimes, the customer only uses the backup for one month or three months. Currently, I have to pay whether I use it or not. Its licensing should be flexible and based on consumption."
  • "Its licensing is weird. It is not just the licenses; we also purchase hardware. With most software products, such as Veeam, Commvault, and Data Protector, there is no hardware purchase at the same time. Because Avamar and Data Domain are tied together, they have an integrated pipe. You can separate them, but basically, they're designed to work as a couple. Because the Data Domain backend is designed to do dedupe and compression, we get 60:1. When you count it, you count it as a straight compression, but of course, that's with dedupe and some other stuff. You have to buy the hardware, the licensing, and the software at the same time. So, it's not just software."

  • "We have increased our scalability while being able to free up senior resources from recovery activities. I estimate our overall savings to about $20,000 per year."
  • "Veeam is more reasonably priced than some competing products."
  • "My understanding is that it is a fairly small price point."
  • "Its software solution has a fee."
  • "It is more expensive than other solutions."
  • "If you tell Veeam that you're competing with, for example, NetBackup or Backup Exec, or Dell or Micro Focus then they may lower the price. They are very competitive."
  • "I don't know what the costs are for sure, but I think that it's on a yearly basis."
  • "Its price is reasonable for a big company or a big client. It is not too much. It is cheaper than VMware."
