Quotes From Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
"Highly available storage is the most valuable feature. The entire rollout is hyper-converged and requires no extra storage further than the hosts in which Hyper-V is running. Another feature that has been great is the support from StarWind in general. We have their proactive support package on the main cluster that employs Starwind Virtual SAN.""High Availability is the best feature of product.""The ability for us to manage all of our nodes from the same console makes systems administration very easy.""It is extremely stable.""The solution is also quite flexible. As an example, other vSAN solutions that we looked at had more stringent requirements regarding mixed HDD/SSD storage which wouldn't have worked in our environment.""The primary purpose of this software is to create a virtual SAN between local storage on Hyper-V hosts. I find this feature most valuable since it accomplishes this quite well.""VSAN works great; it's very easy to install, configure, and manage.""The most useful aspect is the hyper-converged SD SAN and the ease to expand it by just adding cheap SSD or NVME disks."

"We've had no issues with scaling the solution.""The most valuable feature is high availability.""It is easy to use for management and operations teams because the tools are in one place.""The solution was connected to alternate storage. It provides great scalability and reliability."

"The high availability is very good.""We find it easy to deliver this solution.""The solution is quite stable.""The most valuable features are secure IOPs and LAN security.""The solution fits well with my requirements.""Technical support is very helpful and very good at resolving issues.""The technical support is good. We are always thankful for the technical support from VMware. They are very supportive when we have a technical problem.""I like the orchestration feature."

Cons
"Being able to run StarWind vSAN on top of any free UNIX operating system to build a resilient iSCSI/FTP/SMB storage system would be useful.""Updating the software can be a bit tricky.""The console is something that I feel could be improved. There is nothing technically wrong with it, but it can be jazzed up and/or made to be a little more intuitive.""When StarWind Virtual SAN for vSphere nodes go offline unexpectedly, the nodes have to re-sync disks fully which takes a long time. We had a power failure and when both nodes came online, VMware vSphere didn't see StarWind disks before I manually re-scanned them form ESXi administration console even though it should happen automatically""We would like the documentation to be more complete. Most items are covered, but if you don't know something, you may need to contact their support.""This solution should be more self-sufficient, running without creating domains or failover clusters.""If there was one feature I would like to see it would be a built-in subsystem for managing UPS backups shutdown procedures providing a way to initiate VM shutdown on all host servers, shut down the host servers, then put the fault-tolerant mirroring in standby, and finally shut down the StarWind SANs.""Having more support plan options would be nice."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons »

"The biggest issue with the solution is that it doesn't support Hyper V. It's a big problem.""I would like to see a more user-friendly interface.""We've had some issues around the licensing.""The installation is complex."

More Dell EMC PowerFlex Cons »

"Ease of administration is one area where vSAN could be improved.""They can package it in a way that is specific to the hardware infrastructure and the hardware platform. It should stay fairly up to date with the drivers and the manufacturer issues. The problem with uncoupling the proprietary technology and component capabilities is that by uncoupling them, you run into some concerns or challenges over the poor performance model. These concerns really come when you start talking about high performance, high bandwidth, and high availability types of environments. While vSAN is a leader, in a critical view, it is not about being cost-effective. It is more about the immediate impact of money loss to the business in critical applications where we want to maintain a continuous operational 59 model. It is, however, good for QA/QC tasks. I don't necessarily know how it works in regards to VDI or virtual desktop infrastructure.""There's a lot that can be done to segregate. That may be available now in vSAN 7, I suppose, however, the deduplication and compression can be segregated.""The integration could be improved. I would like to see integration with other platforms.""VMware vSAN needs to improve its features because other solutions have more advanced features.""This solution is not great for large file shares/object/rich media repository.""When we talk about improvements for vSAN, there is some way to go from a at least stability perspective. Adding all these new features is nice, but we are now at the level that most of the features you need in production are there.""It would be ideal if clients didn't need to monitor the solution on a daily basis."

Pricing and Cost Advice
"The StarWind VSAN business model is very cost-effective.""The cost, including OPEX, is lower compared to other solutions.""The cost takes into account the number of nodes, so the size of the storage is not important.""If you are looking at a traditional SAN for a small cluster, give StarWind vSAN because you will save thousands without any compromise.""Licensing is easy and the whole package is cost-effective.""I think the bang for the buck is much better with StarWind Virtual SAN.""The cost was ultimately low to implement, which allowed us to be 3-2-1 complaint.""This solution has competitive prices and the implementation is very easy."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Pricing and Cost Advice »

"The price of the solution is fair, it is priced in the average range amongst competitors.""The pricing for this solution is good."

More Dell EMC PowerFlex Pricing and Cost Advice »

"In comparison with other solutions, such as HP or Cisco, I find the solution to be quite pricey.""This solution is expensive. Nutanix provides us with Acropolis Operating System (AOS) along with its hardware, while VMware provides vSAN, vCenter, and vSphere which all have separate licenses and costs.""We pay for a license to use the solution through our company CapEx and then we continue to pay annually.""ROI from an administrative perspective is clearly much better because I only have to deal with one user interface.""The solution requires a license. The payment is on a yearly basis and It is not overly expensive.""It is expensive, but you get what you pay for.""It is cheap. It is $0.02 a gig.""I would like to use more advanced models of the solution but the price needs to be reduced. There are some extra costs for this solution including a license."

Overview

For SMB, ROBO, Cloud and Hosting providers, who look to cut down virtualization expenses, our solution is StarWind VSAN. It is software that eliminates any need in physical shared storage by basically “mirroring” internal hard disks and flash between hypervisor servers. There is less hardware to buy in general, consequently less money is spent on purchase and maintenance. The existing hardware is used with maximum efficiency, so there is no money wasted at all.

StarWind Virtual SAN targets those who already have servers, or are bound to a particular vendor list to buy from. In case there is a new virtualization infrastructure to be built from scratch, StarWind offers a much better way – StarWind HyperConverged Appliance. It is a turnkey solution complete with hardware and software, powered by StarWind Virtual SAN. Those who need to build and maintain virtualization infrastructure at little to no expense, may be interested in StarWind Virtual SAN Free.

VxRack System consists of hyper-converged rack-scale engineered systems, with integrated networking, to achieve the scalability and management requirements of traditional and cloud native workloads. The VxRack series is purposely designed to enable customers to quickly deploy Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) and/or Private Cloud architectures. VxRack Systems tightly integrate hardware with software and management layers.
