We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
"There's lots of flexibility in how we use the resources while also maintaining a small footprint.""We have been able to consolidate storage into Pavilion. Pavilions are our only SANs because it is a bring your own disk solution. When new drives come out, we are able to take out half of the drives in the system, put in new drives, move our VMs over to the new drives, take the other drives out, and populate those with new drives. Then, we are suddenly twice as dense as we were before. NVMe flash is only going to get denser and cheaper so we can make use of that every couple of years by just throwing newer disks into it at a fraction of the cost of a new SAN.""The high performance is very valuable, as well as the enterprise reliability features."

"I have found Dell EMC Unity XT to be stable.""The high availability of Dell EMC Unity XT has been the most important feature.""I have had no problem at all. I think this is one of the most important things. It is very good. Maintaining it and deploying updates require very low maintenance. We haven't had problems. We had to replace a couple of disks in all these years, but it was pretty straightforward.""The most valuable feature is the integration with vCenter.""Initial setup is a simple process.""Integration is easy with this product.""The feature that I have found most valuable is the unified storage. Also, its capabilities for block-access, file access, and the center box."

"The system efficiency is excellent overall.""The dashboard is such that you don't need to be a storage expert to administer it.""SolidFire provides seamless performance across your storage system when you need to scale up. Other storage systems do not do that.""The most valuable feature is the performance, as well as how you manage performance on the system.""It's got full API functionality and the performance is pretty steady.""I would say in terms of architecture and in terms of functionality, the product is quite good."

Cons
"I would like to see the management layer improved.""The rail system that Pavilion uses to mount up into a standard Dell or APC cabinet extends further back than normal rails, and they cover up the zero PDU slot. So, I don't like the rail system that comes with the device. That is my biggest complaint.""In our current configuration, we can only run the line controllers in high availability, active-standby mode, whereas we would like to see active-active implemented."

"Issues with slow responses from the support team.""In terms of what could be improved, I would say the deduplication part, because for large deduplications, you need an extra appliance to do it in order to avoid having problems in performance. I think that could be improved, because everything should be included in the product, not with an appliance from the outside.""In terms of what could be improved, I would say its capacity and its connection.""Support Responsiveness & time to fix bugs should be improved.""The interface and configuration could improve.""Currently, the protocol SNMP is not implemented. That's a problem, as we follow this protocol and I can't check the integrity of this equipment."

More Dell EMC Unity XT Cons »

"SolidFire should start from two nodes instead of the four nodes. That's the only thing. In a lot of solutions, we have to use four nodes, that's the better thing. But as a starting point, two is better. That's why their starting point is expensive.""The user interface needs to be improved. Much of the client feedback involves comments such as "Oh, it's hard to navigate through."""You don't have business continuity with SolidFire. I think it could be a nice feature to have in the future.""The upgrade process could be better.""The technical support is really bad and has to be improved.""The inclusion of more protocols and interfaces would make it easier to integrate with other products."

Pricing and Cost Advice
"The licensing fees are very reasonable.""This is hardware. They have a singular array that you can populate with your own disk, or you can buy the disks through them. For controllers, you pay for the components inside of the SAN, but there is only one chassis that they work with."

More Pavilion HyperParallel Flash Array Pricing and Cost Advice »

"The price of Dell EMC Unity XT is higher compared to other solutions. The price should be less expensive.""Pricing for this product is manageable, though slightly higher than comparable products."
