We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
"Recovery and maintenance are now less stressful and most importantly, it allows our users to keep working.""vSAN we found was simple to set up, easy to configure and manage and allows us to achieve storage redundancy.""It has a nice, simple control panel. You can clearly see the state and health of storage along with the synchronization.""Speed and high availability have been the most valuable for us.""A great feature is that I basically set it and forget it, as everything is automatic.""High Availability is the best feature of product.""Using our own choice of HW allowed us to price our service to answer our customers' needs.""Quick setup, great support, stability is great"

"Dell EMC VxFlex Ready Nodes can support what we call a heterogeneous environment. So you can have VMware workloads, Hyper-V workloads, bare metal Red Hat workloads, Kubernetes workloads all on the same cluster. You're not pigeonholed into either all bare metal or all virtualized. So it supports basically any platform."

More Dell EMC VxFlex Ready Nodes Pros »

"Good performance, reliable and agile.""The high availability is very good.""It's stable and scalable. Also, you can virtualize SAN so that you don't have to have a separate storage area network and can have your computer and storage on the same box or computer.""The solution is quite stable.""The solution is easy to use.""We have found the solution to be very scalable.""Technical support is very helpful and very good at resolving issues.""It's completely hyper-converged, so it's very convenient."

Cons
"I would like to see options for automated notifications of any changes, including, for example, synchronization issues.""Maybe in the future, the replication will be supported in more cloud providers.""A mobile app to sync up for overview and status would really be helpful.""When StarWind Virtual SAN for vSphere nodes go offline unexpectedly, the nodes have to re-sync disks fully which takes a long time. We had a power failure and when both nodes came online, VMware vSphere didn't see StarWind disks before I manually re-scanned them form ESXi administration console even though it should happen automatically""The StarWind Management Console is available only for Microsoft Windows/Windows Server, and should also be available for Linux and macOS, as it would reduce implementation costs.""If there was a way to automatically put disks in maintenance mode when shutting the host down and exit maintenance mode automatically, that would simplify things.""I found that certain browsers are not fully compatible with the administration web access portal.""For the StarWind VSA vSphere solution, I would like to see a simpler and automated virtual machine installation process in terms of network settings."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons »

"From a technical perspective, it's a pretty rock solid solution. I would say the only area for improvement is around its price."

More Dell EMC VxFlex Ready Nodes Cons »

"Its installation should be easier, and its price should be cheaper. It would be good for the product if they can include the data locality feature.""I would like to see better integration between the cloud and our VMware virtual environment. We only have one virtual environment, which is VMware vSAN. Right now, there is little interoperability with the cloud solution at the moment.""They can improve the manageability of the solution to make it more simple. It is not that complicated, but it will be good if they can make it more simple.""In a future release, they can bring in the object storage capabilities to this solution. Currently, there is not any compatibility.""Troubleshooting tools could be improved.""Hardware load balancing is available on the enterprise version of the solution, however, it's extremely expensive and therefore out of our budget.""The UI falls short compared to other solutions. It needs some development to make it more user-friendly.""It should be easier to use."

Pricing and Cost Advice
"The cost takes into account the number of nodes, so the size of the storage is not important.""If you are looking at a traditional SAN for a small cluster, give StarWind vSAN because you will save thousands without any compromise.""The premium support from StarWinds is a must have. The ability to have access to a storage engineer 24/7 is a must for a production environment.""The cost was ultimately low to implement, which allowed us to be 3-2-1 complaint.""This solution has competitive prices and the implementation is very easy.""We found that the pricing was perfect; simple and clear.""The cost seems a bit steep, and I wish it was less expensive.""Licensing is easy and the whole package is cost-effective."

Information Not Available
"I feel the pricing to be reasonable.""In comparison with other solutions, such as HP or Cisco, I find the solution to be quite pricey.""The price is expensive.""This solution requires the purchase of a license.""The price is okay.""For a classical node plus storage solution, the price is higher.""It is an expensive solution. There should be more flexible with licensing to allow small businesses the essentials of the solution's features.""vSAN has many versions with standard and advanced including Enterprise and Enterprise Plus. Regarding the Enterprise and the Advanced, it could be lower."

Overview

For SMB, ROBO, Cloud and Hosting providers, who look to cut down virtualization expenses, our solution is StarWind VSAN. It is software that eliminates any need in physical shared storage by basically “mirroring” internal hard disks and flash between hypervisor servers. There is less hardware to buy in general, consequently less money is spent on purchase and maintenance. The existing hardware is used with maximum efficiency, so there is no money wasted at all.

StarWind Virtual SAN targets those who already have servers, or are bound to a particular vendor list to buy from. In case there is a new virtualization infrastructure to be built from scratch, StarWind offers a much better way – StarWind HyperConverged Appliance. It is a turnkey solution complete with hardware and software, powered by StarWind Virtual SAN. Those who need to build and maintain virtualization infrastructure at little to no expense, may be interested in StarWind Virtual SAN Free.

VxRack FLEX and VxFlex Ready Nodes, also known as the Flex family, create a server-based SAN by combining virtualization software, known as VxFlex OS, with Dell EMC PowerEdge servers to deliver flexibility, scalability, and capacity on demand. Local storage resources are combined to create a virtual pool of block storage with varying performance tiers. The platform enables you to start small (with as little as four nodes) and scale incrementally. The Flex family provides enterprise-grade data protection, multi-tenant capabilities, and add-on enterprise features such as QoS, thin provisioning, and snapshots. VxFlex OS is the key enabler and provides an unmatched combination of performance, resiliency and flexibility to address enterprise data center needs. The unique features of VxFlex OS make it an excellent complement to Kubernetes for stateful applications, such as databases, continuous integration, logging and monitoring platforms.

VMware vSAN is the industry-leading software powering Hyper-Converged Infrastructure solutions.
