Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"One of the biggest features of the UI is that you see the actual code of what you're doing in the graphical user interface, in a little window on the side. Whatever you're doing, you see the code, what's happening. And you can really quickly switch between using the GUI and using the code. That's really useful.""Devo helps us to unlock the full power of our data because they have more than 450 parsers, which means that we can ingest pretty much any type of log data.""The most valuable feature is definitely the ability that Devo has to ingest data. From the previous SIEM that I came from and helped my company administer, it really was the type of system where data was parsed on ingest. This meant that if you didn't build the parser efficiently or correctly, sometimes that would bring the system to its knees. You'd have a backlog of processing the logs as it was ingesting them.""The user experience [is] well thought out and the workflows are logical. The dashboards are intuitive and highly customizable.""It's very, very versatile.""Devo provides a multi-tenant, cloud-native architecture. This is critical for managed service provider environments or multinational organizations who may have subsidiaries globally. It gives organizations a way to consolidate their data in a single accessible location, yet keep the data separate. This allows for global views and/or isolated views restricted by access controls by company or business unit.""The real-time analytics of security-related data are super. There are a lot of data feeds going into it and it's very quick at pulling up and correlating the data and showing you what's going on in your infrastructure. It's fast. The way that their architecture and technology works, they've really focused on the speed of query results and making sure that we can do what we need to do quickly. Devo is pulling back information in a fast fashion, based on real-time events.""The strength of Devo is not only in that it is pretty intuitive, but it gives you the flexibility and creativity to merge feeds. The prime examples would be using the synthesis or union tables that give you phenomenal capabilities... The ability to use a synthesis or union table to combine all those feeds and make heads or tails of what's going on, and link it to go down a thread, is functionality that I hadn't seen before."

"Just the ability to do a lot more than just up-down is nice, which a lot of people take for granted.""It is very quick to react. I can set it to check anomalies or suspicious behavior every 30 seconds. It is very fast.""Elastic is straightforward, easy to integrate, and highly customizable.""The most valuable features are the speed, detail, and visualization. It has the latest standards.""The most valuable feature is the machine learning capability.""Elastic has a lot of beats, such as Winlogbeat and Filebeat. Beats are the agents that have to be installed on the terminals to send the data. When we install beats or Elastic agents on every terminal, they don't overload the terminals. In other SIEM solutions such as Splunk or QRadar, when beats or agents are installed on endpoints, they are very heavy for the terminals. They consume a lot of power of the terminals, whereas Elastic agents hardly consume any power and don't overload the terminals.""The performance is good and it is faster than IBM QRadar.""The most valuable feature is the speed, as it responds in a very short time."

"Offers a good wireless feature.""The most valuable feature is the security that it provides.""The newer 11.5 version that my team is using has found it to have good mapping.""It's quite economical compared to other solutions in the market.""The most valuable features are the integration and ease of use.""The most valuable features are the packet inspection and the automated incident response.""Performance and reporting are very good.""The solution is really scalable for the high-end power, enterprise customer."

Cons
"Devo has a lot of cloud connectors, but they need to do a little bit of work there. They've got good integrations with the public cloud, but there are a lot of cloud SaaS systems that they still need to work with on integrations, such as Salesforce and other SaaS providers where we need to get access logs.""Technical support could be better.""There's room for improvement within the GUI. There is also some room for improvement within the native parsers they support. But I can say that about pretty much any solution in this space.""One major area for improvement for Devo... is to provide more capabilities around pre-built monitoring. They're working on integrations with different types of systems, but that integration needs to go beyond just onboarding to the platform. It needs to include applications, out-of-the-box, that immediately help people to start monitoring their systems. Such applications would include dashboards and alerts, and then people could customize them for their own needs so that they aren't starting from a blank slate.""I would like to have the ability to create more complex dashboards.""There's always room to reduce the learning curve over how to deal with events and machine data. They could make the machine data simpler.""We only use the core functionality and one of the reasons for this is that their security operation center needs improvement.""There is room for improvement in the ability to parse different log types. I would go as far as to say the product is deficient in its ability to parse multiple, different log types, including logs from major vendors that are supported by competitors. Additionally, the time that it takes to turn around a supported parser for customers and common log source types, which are generally accepted standards in the industry, is not acceptable. This has impacted customer onboarding and customer relationships for us on multiple fronts."

More Devo Cons →

"The Integration module could be improved. It is a pain to build integration with any product. We have to do parking and so on. It's not like other commercial solutions that use profile integration. I would also see more detection features on the SIEM side.""The interface could be more user friendly because it is sometimes hard to deal with.""Its documentation should be a bit better. I have to spend at least a couple of hours to find the solution for a simple thing. When we buy Elastic, training is not included for free with Elastic. We have to pay extra for the training. They should include training in the price.""This solution is very hard to implement.""The training that is offered for Elastic is in need of improvement because there is no depth to it.""If you compare this with CrowdStrike or Carbon Black, they can improve.""The biggest challenge has been related to the implementation.""There should be a simulation environment to check whether my Elastic implementation is functioning perfectly fine. Other solutions have their own Android and iOS applications that I can install on my mobile so that I am continuously connected to the SIEM."

More Elastic SIEM Cons →

"More customizability is required, which is something that they need to improve on.""There are instances where you try to run the reports and then it does not give you the desired outcome.""The initial setup is complex. There are other solutions that are easier to implement.""The user interface is a little bit difficult for new users and it needs to be improved.""The solution should have more integration capabilities with different platforms.""It is not so easy to customize this product.""The multi-tenant capabilities are lagging compared to IBM QRadar.""Security needs improvement."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "We have an OEM agreement with Devo. It is very similar to the standard licensing agreement because we are charged in the same way as any other customer, e.g., we use the backroom."
  • "I'm not involved in the financial aspect, but I think the licensing costs are similar to other solutions. If all the solutions have a similar cost, Devo provides more for the money."
  • "Devo is definitely cheaper than Splunk. There's no doubt about that. The value from Devo is good. It's definitely more valuable to me than QRadar or LogRhythm or any of the old, traditional SIEMs."
  • "[Devo was] in the ballpark with at least a couple of the other front-runners that we were looking at. Devo is a good value and, given the quality of the product, I would expect to pay more."
  • "Be cautious of metadata inclusion for log types in pricing, as there are some "gotchas" with that."
  • "Devo was very cost-competitive... Devo did come with that 400 days of hot data, and that was not the case with other products."
  • "Our licensing fees are billed annually and per terabyte."
  • "I like the pricing very much. They keep it simple. It is a single price based on data ingested, and they do it on an average. If you get a spike of data that flows in, they will not stick it to you or charge you for that. They are very fair about that."

  • "There is no charge for using the open-source version."
  • "It's a monthly cost with Elastic SIEM, but I am not sure of the exact cost."
  • "Its price is fine. Its licensing works on a yearly basis. We have to renew the license every year. I also have a good experience with Darktrace. When we buy Darktrace, we get training free of cost, which is not there in Elastic. We have to pay extra for training. There is certainly room for improvement."

  • "Our license is for one year."
  • "There is a licensing fee and the customer can choose whether he wishes this to be subscription-based or perpetual."
  • "We are on an annual license for the use of the solution."

Elastic SIEM equips security practitioners with easy data ingestion via Beats, shareable analytics based on the Elastic Common Schema (ECS), and the ability to interact with security data using the SIEM app in Kibana. As threats continue to evolve, so too will Elastic SIEM.

If you’re relying on log data to detect and prevent cyber threats, you’re in trouble. Attackers increasingly evade detection of log-centric security and network monitoring tools. But logs combined with full packet, endpoint NetFlow data are proven to provide the essential details for early threat detection. Here’s a closer look at our solution.
