We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
"It's got the capabilities of amassing a lot of throughput with remote access and VPNs.""A good intrusion prevention system and filtering.""I have experience with URL filtering, and it is very good for URL filtering. You can filter URLs based on the categories, and it does a good job. It can also do deep packet inspection.""The integration of network and workload micro-segmentation helps a lot to provide unified segmentation policies across east-west and north-south traffic. One concrete example is with Cisco ACI for the data center. Not only are we doing what is called a service graph on the ACI to make sure that we can filter traffic east-west between two endpoints in the same network, but when we go north-south or east-west, we can then leverage what we have on the network with SGTs on Cisco ISE. Once you build your matrix, it is very easy to filter in and out on east-west or north-south traffic.""Feature-wise, we mostly use IPS because it is a security requirement to protect against attacks from outside and inside. This is where IPS helps us out a bunch.""Provides good integrations and reporting.""Being able to determine our active users vs inactive users has led us to increased productivity through visibility. Also, if an issue was happening with our throughput, then we wouldn't know without research. Now, notifications are more proactively happening.""The dashboard is the most important thing. It provides good visibility and makes management easy. Firepower also provides us with good application visibility and control."

"The standard features, including the filtering, are quite good. All the basic features are pretty useful for us.""The most valuable feature is geofencing, where we can block all access from all non-domestic locations.""While the stability maybe isn't quite to the level of Cisco, it is a very cost-effective solution. It's cheap compared to Cisco.""The user interface is the most valuable aspect of the solution.""FortiGate is a nice and very good product.""Overall, it's an excellent solution.""It's a relatively simple product that is easy to use. It's not overly complex.""The thing that I like the most is that they're very willing to work with us to resolve issues that they haven't taken care of before in their product."

"The most valuable features are IPS, MAPI, NAT, and VPN.""They have a command center that makes it easy to log into and see all of your appliances nationwide.""All features are useful. We are using premium features such as bandwidth sharing, failover, web filters, SSL controls, antivirus, and VPN. We use these features to the fullest. These features are available in the paid firewall license, not the free one.""Easy to set up and easy to integrate.""Its detection, antivirus, and filtering features are the most valuable. The facility to connect by using the VPN connection is also a very valuable feature. It is very strong, secure, and reliable. We have implemented the Untangle solution in all hardware. It is also a user-friendly solution. It is easy to learn and easy to configure."

Cons
"I believe that the current feature set of the device is very good and the only thing that Cisco should work on is improving the user experience with the device.""The initial setup could be simplified, as it can be complex for new users.""My team tells me that other solutions such as Fortinet and Palo Alto are easier to implement.""Web filtering needs improvement because sometimes the URL is miscategorized.""The Firepower FTD code is missing some old ASA firewalls codes. It's a small thing. But Firepower software isn't missing things that are essential, anymore.""Report generation is an area that should be improved.""This product is managed using the Firepower Management Center (FMC), but it would be better if it also supported the command-line interface (CLI).""FlexConfig is there as a bridge for features that are not yet natively integrated into Firepower. It is a way of allowing you to be able to configure things that wouldn't otherwise be possible until the development team can add them into Firepower's native capability. There is still some work that needs to be done around FlexConfig. There are still quite a few complex things, like policy-based routing, that have to be done in FlexConfig, and it doesn't always work perfectly. Sometimes, there are some glitches. It is recommended that you configure FlexConfig policies with Cisco TAC. It would be good to see Cisco accelerate some of those configurations that you can only do in FlexConfig into the platform, so that they are there natively."

"It needs an Application Inspection.""When new versions are deployed they tend to be a little buggy, so they should be more fully tested before release.""There should be a bit more automation.""In the next release, we would like to see full integration with VMware NSX virtualized networks.""The solution is fairly complex.""The one thing that could be improved is the integration with the exchange. The gateway level controls can be enhanced a bit more. For example, it's still little here and there. You do get malicious attacks and suspicious emails like spam. It's not like Sophos where we got a lot of spam email, and yet, it's still relatively vulnerable. It can be upgraded, maybe with a fifth-generation firmware that it is ready for unknown threats.""Deployment can be difficult and they could dispense with reliance on FortiManager and FortiAnalyzer.""FortiGate should be more customer friendly and budgeted better."

More Fortinet FortiGate-VM Cons »

"The pricing should be reduced because it is expensive.""We seek the availability of the hardware in our region. The hardware-based firewall from Untangle is currently not available in our region. It should have threat protection on a real-time basis. This feature, available in Check Point and Sandstorm kind of scenario, is currently missing in Untangle NG Firewall.""The common center facility that Untangle provides should be available on-premises. There are great corporations here in Mexico that like the Untangle solution, but they don't like the fact that the monitoring and access to the appliance are in the cloud. They request for the common center facility to be available and installed on-premises.""Web-filtering policies could be improved.""They don't have any feature that allows you to drop the session."

Pricing and Cost Advice
"Cisco is not for a small mom-and-pop shop because of the cost, but if you're in a regulated industry where a breach could cost you a million dollars, it's a bargain.""The solution was chosen because of its price compared to other similar solutions.""When we purchased the firewall, we had to take the security license for IPS, malware protection, and VPN. If we are using high availability, we have to take a license for that. We also have to pay for hardware support and technical support. Its licensing is on a yearly basis.""The price is comparable.""Its pricing is good and competitive. There is a maintenance cost. It includes SecureX that makes it cost-effective as compared to the other solutions where you have to pay for XDR and SOAR capabilities.""Cisco, as we all know, is expensive, but for the money you are paying, you know that you are also getting top-notch documentation as well as support if needed.""Its price is in the middle range. Both Firepower and FortiGate are not cheap. Palo Alto and Check Point are the cheapest ones. I don't remember any costs in addition to the standard licensing fees.""It definitely competes with the other vendors in the market."

"It's a mid-ranged product.""The price of this product is great compared to others.""At present, the SD-WAN licenses are on an annual basis.""The price is similar to Symantec Endpoint, but it's more expensive than Forcepoint solutions. Fortinet is better than Forcepoint.""The price could be lower.""We are on an annual license for this solution and it could be cheaper.""The cost of this product is too high.""There is no additional cost. Once you get the licensing fee, you're good."

More Fortinet FortiGate-VM Pricing and Cost Advice »

"It is not expensive. It is cheaper than Fortinet.""The pricing model is better than with SonicWall.""It is not expensive. The best part is that it is based on the pay-per-use kind of scenario. An increase or decrease in the number of people doesn't make any difference. We are really happy about using this particular scenario."
