Quotes From Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
"One of the most valuable features of Firepower 7.0 is the "live log" type feature called Unified Event Viewer. That view has been really good in helping me get to data faster, decreasing the amount of time it takes to find information, and allowing me to fix problems faster. I've found that to be incredibly valuable because it's a lot easier to get to some points of data now.""A good intrusion prevention system and filtering.""The most valuable features of this solution are the integrations and IPS throughput.""Provides good integrations and reporting.""Being able to determine our active users vs inactive users has led us to increased productivity through visibility. Also, if an issue was happening with our throughput, then we wouldn't know without research. Now, notifications are more proactively happening.""The most valuable feature that Cisco Firepower NGFW provides for us is the Intrusion policy.""We have not had to deal with stability issues.""One of the most valuable features is the AMP. It's very good and very reliable when it comes to malicious activities, websites, and viruses."

"The VDOM (Virtual DOM) is a virtualized firewall that has some opportunities for flexibility that are an advantage in certain configurations.""All networks are security-driven, we get throughputs and security. We feel that the people at Fortinet are easy to deal with from a support standpoint. If they need to jump in and help us, they're very willing to do that. Their email filtering, their data loss prevention, their intrusion prevention, type of products in the newest OSs has been outstanding.""FortiGate as a product is very easy to configure.""There are many useful features, such as web security and advanced threat detection.""It is more robust than SonicWall, particularly on the VPN from site to site.""I personally think the site-to-site VPN is the most useful feature. A lot of firewalls have that, but to me, that's one of the features that's essential.""There are a lot of features that we like within the solution. The resources or performance of the firewall is very good. However, the real selling point is the fact that the solution offers so many features, it gives our clients a lot of extras that they can work with. There's a lot on offer.""The main features I find useful are intrusion prevention and web filtering. Additionally, the solution is easy to manage."

"Sophos UTM is the simplest of these products to setup.""The initial setup is pretty easy.""The most valuable features of this solution are the firewall application and application control.""It's a stable solution.""We've found the technical support to be helpful.""Efficient and effective - it's easy to separate rules.""Sophos is a unified solution. We have anti-virus protection, firewall rules, knotting, and DACC all in one box.""The most valuable feature is the price. I've been requesting prices all over these years between different solutions like Fortinet, Palo Alto, and Check Point and Sophos has been the cheapest and the best of all of them that I have tried. I have been working with Fortinet, it's a fact that the price is surprisingly better."

Cons
"Its interface is sometimes is a little bit slow, and it can be improved. When you need to put your appliance in failover mode, it is a little difficult to do it remotely because you need to turn off the appliance in Cisco mode. In terms of new features, it would be good to have AnyConnect VPN with Firepower. I am not sure if it is available at the moment.""One feature I would like to see, that Firepower doesn't have, is email security. Perhaps in the future, Cisco will integrate Cisco Umbrella with Firepower. I don't see why we should have to pay for two separate products when both could be integrated in one box.""We're getting support but there's a big delay until we get a response from their technical team. They're in the USA and we're in Africa, so that's the difficulty. When they're in the office, they respond.""The configuration in Firepower Management Center is very slow. Deployment takes two to three minutes. You spend a lot of time on modifications. Whereas, in FortiGate, you press a button, and it takes one second.""When you make any changes, irrespective of whether they are big or small, Firepower takes too much time. It is very time-consuming. Even for small changes, you have to wait for 60 seconds or maybe more, which is not good. Similarly, when you have many IPS rules and policies, it slows down, and there is an impact on its performance.""Cisco Firepower NGFW Firewall can be more secure.""My team tells me that other solutions such as Fortinet and Palo Alto are easier to implement.""The price and SD-WAN capabilities are the areas that need improvement."

More Cisco Firepower NGFW Firewall Cons »

"The reporting and monitoring could improve, they have a lot of limitations. The monitoring is not easy compared to the other firewall.""Technical support could be better. Some competitors have much more responsive support teams.""It would be great if they can push the Microsoft updates through Fortinet OS and provide a centralized patch management system. They should also include the data loss prevention (DLP) and data leakage prevention features. They could also add network monitoring more effectively.""Right now, it's very trendy to integrate everything into the cloud. This solution would be more effective if they did more integration in that regard.""The solution could improve the log retention and reports.""The solution could improve by making the dashboard easier to use.""Lacks flexibility for different scenario configurations.""I can only compare it with SonicWall, and it is missing many advanced features that SonicWall has."

More Fortinet FortiOS Cons »

"I think that additional metrics features are needed to be able to monitor other areas or to monitor as much as you can, at a fine-grain resolution.""The ease of use could be a bit better.""It's stable, but the reaction time of the GUI is terrible.""The initial setup may be difficult for those not familiar with the product.""Sophos should improve its ability to check something like bandwidth consumption for users or something more real-time.""The classification segregation of applications lacks sufficient definition.""There needs to be some improvement in the IPsec VPN. There is implementation only support. I have version one. I'd be most interested in having IP version two from the protocol.""The solution needs to do better at covering mobile devices, although they may have an integrated solution for that purpose."

Pricing and Cost Advice
"Its pricing is good and competitive. There is a maintenance cost. It includes SecureX that makes it cost-effective as compared to the other solutions where you have to pay for XDR and SOAR capabilities.""I know that licensing for some of the advanced solutions, like Intrusion Prevention and Secure Malware Analytics, are nominal costs.""This product requires licenses for advanced features including Snort, IPS, and malware detection.""I like the Smart Licensing, because it is more dynamic and easier to keep track of where you are at. If we have a high availability firewall pair and they are deployed in active/standby rather than active/active, I would expect that we would only pay for one set of licenses because you are using only one firewall at any one time. The other is there just for resiliency. The licensing, from a Firepower perspective, still requires you to have two licenses, even if the firewalls are in active/standby, which means that you pay for the two licenses, even though you might only be using one firewall any one time. This is probably not the best way to do it and doesn't represent the best value for money. This could be looked at to see if it could be done in a fairer way.""There are additional implementation and validation costs.""Pricing is the same as other competitors. It is comparable. The licensing has gotten better. It has been easier with Smart Licensing.""When we are fighting against other competitors for customers, whether it is a small or big business, we feel very comfortable with the price that Firepower has today.""Cisco is not for a small mom-and-pop shop because of the cost, but if you're in a regulated industry where a breach could cost you a million dollars, it's a bargain."

More Cisco Firepower NGFW Firewall Pricing and Cost Advice »

"The software costs roughly half what the hardware costs. Overall, the product is expensive.""The support contracts are usually about $100 - $200 a device.""The price of Fortinet FortiOS has been reasonable.""There is a license required for the solution and the price is fair."

More Fortinet FortiOS Pricing and Cost Advice »

"This product is free for home users. The more expensive products have better performance.""I think the pricing of Sophos is very fair.""It is the cheapest product available. It's good if you have a low budget.""We pay for the service on a yearly basis. The last time we paid was in June, for a year. At the time, it was about $20,000.""It's reasonably priced.""The appliance should be purchased and there is a fee for the license.""The solution is very low cost compared to competitors. You have a good firewall, a lot of functions for less than the price of some omni firewall competitors.""Our licensing fees are paid on a monthly basis."
