Quotes From Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
"The management interface on the software is very simple. It is insanely simple compared to most SANs. The interface is also powerful when used to complete tasks that an IT administrator needs to complete.""When using new (warranty) servers, you can forget about the storage service for several years. The users will not even notice the failure of two servers out of three.""StarWind Virtual SAN for vSphere is a software-defined storage solution that has reduced administration time for storage. It's pretty straightforward to install and setup it and so far it has been robust and worked as advertised from StarWind.""A great feature is that I basically set it and forget it, as everything is automatic.""The most valuable features are high availability and real-time replication between two servers.""The solution is also quite flexible. As an example, other vSAN solutions that we looked at had more stringent requirements regarding mixed HDD/SSD storage which wouldn't have worked in our environment.""The primary purpose of this software is to create a virtual SAN between local storage on Hyper-V hosts. I find this feature most valuable since it accomplishes this quite well.""The ability for us to manage all of our nodes from the same console makes systems administration very easy."

"Reasonably priced and easy to manage for small to medium size companies that don't have an IT department."

More HPE Hyper Converged Pros »

"Our goal with NetApp HCI is to have no single point of failure.""The solution is very scalable.""The ability to size the available space in a way that matches our company's needs is most valuable. For instance, you can decide if you want 80/20, 70/30, or 60/40 space. Redundancy depends on your needs without changing the appliance. You just add space and decide the percentage of space that you need free and the percentage of space that you need for backup. It is all automatic, and you don't have to do anything. You just add space, and the system automatically configures itself with the chosen option."

Cons
"If there was one feature I would like to see it would be a built-in subsystem for managing UPS backups shutdown procedures providing a way to initiate VM shutdown on all host servers, shut down the host servers, then put the fault-tolerant mirroring in standby, and finally shut down the StarWind SANs.""Maybe in the future, the replication will be supported in more cloud providers.""I think the setup could be streamlined a bit.""The main thing I would like to see improved is the level of documentation.""The main issue we ran into was the documentation. We attempted to set up the product in our test environment by ourselves and ran into several areas of the documentation that were unclear to us.""It would help if the manufacturer provided clearer and more detailed documentation, with explanations of how the application can be installed in various HA configurations.""We would like the documentation to be more complete. Most items are covered, but if you don't know something, you may need to contact their support.""A mobile app to sync up for overview and status would really be helpful."

"Scalability requires using additional nodes."

More HPE Hyper Converged Cons »

"The networking needs improvement.""Its stability is very bad. It has been crashing continuously. In one year, we got three crashes, which is unbelievable for an appliance that is guaranteed for 10 years without any crash.""The vCenter keeps crashing, meaning that there is no stability in our environment."

Pricing and Cost Advice
"Licensing is easy and the whole package is cost-effective.""I think that purchasing StarWind Virtual SAN Professional Edition would be optimal for most.""If you are looking at a traditional SAN for a small cluster, give StarWind vSAN because you will save thousands without any compromise.""The support contract is well worth it. The price for it was very reasonable and their team has been very engaged whenever we reach out.""The cost takes into account the number of nodes, so the size of the storage is not important.""The premium support from StarWinds is a must have. The ability to have access to a storage engineer 24/7 is a must for a production environment.""We found that the pricing was perfect; simple and clear.""The setup cost, pricing, and licensing are very straightforward. They are exactly what you expect."
