Quotes From Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
"The most valuable feature of this solution is the support. They are excellent and you can learn a lot from the support team.""It allows me to configure High Availability and failover clustering with some fault tolerance, at a cost point that doesn’t break the bank for a small business budget.""A typical system administrator with minimal experience in Hyper-V, VMware, or Windows can do VSAN configuration and maintain VSAN operations.""When using new (warranty) servers, you can forget about the storage service for several years. The users will not even notice the failure of two servers out of three.""We have experienced multiple hardware failures at one site and the fault-tolerant volume worked exactly as expected with zero downtime.""StarWind vSAN is a great solution to create a redundant two-node-only Hyper-V cluster, both for domain or workgroup scenarios.""It has given the company an almost zero possibility of downtime.""It has a nice, simple control panel. You can clearly see the state and health of storage along with the synchronization."

"Among the valuable features are that it's a complete solution, it's easy to use, and there is not a lot of management time involved in operating the solution.""It is easy to set up.""The interface is very good and is very easy to navigate. You can find everything you need from one central place.""The access, high availability, and interface are the most valuable and important for us. There is one interface for the whole product, which is very important because you have a single pane to view all the infrastructure of a customer. You can improve your data recovery plan or DRP, or you can make a special emergency plan if a disk has any problem.""The whole backup capability, where we are able to create backups and restore backups in typically 40 to 50 seconds, has been great.""It's a very nice solution. It's a complete solution that we are looking for because we don't have personnel with expertise.""The technical support is exceptionally good.""The most valuable features are replication and backup."

"VxRail's feature that we found most valuable was its really good performance. That was one of VxRail's advantages.""The stability is very good. We haven't had any issues at all. There aren't bugs or glitches. There aren't system crashes or anything of that nature.""The update process is very convenient.""The solution is perfect for the lifecycle management of hardware.""The recent technologies and management features that have been implemented.""This is a good solution for medium-sized installations especially when it will be coupled with VMware.""The cover points feature in VxRail is remarkable. It's unique. It has an intervention failover system as well as an automatic failover system, reaching clusters existing in VxRail. This makes all files act as a single file with a large and huge resource, and, of course, with customized administration, configuration, and resources. It provides automatic failover for redundancy and data recovery.""VxRail is very cost-effective and affordable in the long term. It is more recommended when it comes to financial life, but it may depend upon the license. VxRail comes with VMware licensing, which may not be that cost-effective as compared to others. With VMware, it's an auto check competition. VMware is an expensive solution, especially for Nutanix. Nutanix have their own hypervisor called Acronis, which is very cost-effective against the VMware. Nutanix is cheaper for the hardware but not for the software. If you ask the Nutanix partners to deploy Nutanix over Cisco servers or Dell EMC servers, the cost will be higher. Nutanix wants to compete financially. Therefore, they propose their software over the Supermicro server, which is a very cheap Chinese server. In fact, I don't like their terms of service. HyperFlex has the highest price, and it is very expensive. I don't know why. It may be because this is a UCS system, which comes from Cisco and is already expensive. When it comes to HyperFlex, they need the labor to deploy Hyper-V, Citrix, or any other hypervisor."

Cons
"I wish there was online support because email return takes a long time and a faster solution should be found.""I would like to see some additional, and possibly clearer, implementation videos with some slower and possibly more detailed descriptions of what the various steps of implementation are for someone who is unfamiliar with high availability and failover clustering in Windows.""This solution should be more self-sufficient, running without creating domains or failover clusters.""For the StarWind VSA vSphere solution, I would like to see a simpler and automated virtual machine installation process in terms of network settings.""If there was one feature I would like to see it would be a built-in subsystem for managing UPS backups shutdown procedures providing a way to initiate VM shutdown on all host servers, shut down the host servers, then put the fault-tolerant mirroring in standby, and finally shut down the StarWind SANs.""Being able to run StarWind vSAN on top of any free UNIX operating system to build a resilient iSCSI/FTP/SMB storage system would be useful.""New versions of this solution should be tested more thoroughly before the release as we had a few problems with one version due to a bug.""In the next release, they could make some graphs of the real-time loading, speed of storage, and interfaces. Of course, these can be viewed in other places. But, in the event of a malfunction or troubleshooting, this would be convenient."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons »

"I would like to see it be a truly hybrid-cloud solution where I could take my on-prem SimpliVity environment and have replication to a cloud install.""Its performance can be faster.""To install or to update it is more complicated than other solutions.""It is not so cheap, and this is the most common complaint that my customers have. It is a very good product, but the price is an issue in Latin America. VMware is a de facto tool. It would be useful for customers if HP can also use Red Hat or any other open-source virtualization product. Currently, you can only use VMware to manage the machines inside SimpliVity.""Scalability is something that needs to be improved because if you need more storage then you have to add more nodes.""There is room for improvement in the operations area because the support for that server space is minimal.""There needs to be a simple process for migrating one SimpliVity cluster to a new SimpliVity cluster.""When it comes to performing backups, the dashboard is not intuitive and not user-friendly."

More HPE SimpliVity Cons »

"It's not really flexible with different use cases.""It should not be deployed on one hypervisor. There should be multiple hypervisors supported like Hyper-V or KVM.""The price should come down a little bit. It has become better than it was at the beginning. There was a really big price difference between a hyper-converged infrastructure and the classic servers and storage. The gap is lessening, however, it's still there.""The licensing costs are too expensive. They should work on their pricing model.""Pricing could be improved.""There is a limitation on the number of nodes.""Troubleshooting can be a little more difficult than legacy systems.""If they can provide deduplication compression through the traditional hard drives, as Cisco does in the HyperFlex system, it will be very cost-effective, especially when it comes to archiving workload. VxRail doesn't allow the mixing of old flash clusters and hyper clusters. When I'm starting with an old flash cluster and it comes to archiving workload, I will also need to attend the new cluster. So, I either manage two different clusters, or I pay and upload my work with the archiving mobile hard drive, which is not cost-effective at all. The main key is to allow mixing between two types of clustering, like Nutanix, or allow deduplication of completion over the period of shared hard drive on SAV. It will be much better."

Pricing and Cost Advice
"There are two tiers of support and in my opinion, support is worth the cost.""Licensing is easy and the whole package is cost-effective.""The cost takes into account the number of nodes, so the size of the storage is not important.""The cost, including OPEX, is lower compared to other solutions.""This is the best priced solution for an SMB.""The premium support from StarWinds is a must have. The ability to have access to a storage engineer 24/7 is a must for a production environment.""The cost seems a bit steep, and I wish it was less expensive.""I think the bang for the buck is much better with StarWind Virtual SAN."

"We're paying $3,000-$4,000 a month.""It is not too expensive, but it is quite expensive for me.""It is expensive for this market. Everyone says that it is a very good product, but the only complaint is about the price.""We bought this solution as a package that included all of the hardware and all of the software.""The price is one of the biggest problems our customers have.""The licensing is on a yearly basis. The licensing cost also includes vCenter at a cost in the cloud solution.""The hardware is expensive. For the same price, Cisco can provide more hardware specifications for us.""The solution can be expensive if you are using a lot of nodes."

More HPE SimpliVity Pricing and Cost Advice »

"A typical node that I would sell to a customer has a list price be between $80,000 and $100,000 per node. Organizations typically start with four nodes. That's the hardware, software, VMware licensing, everything. Customers typically pay about half of that - approximately $45,000 to $50,000 a node. On average, it costs about $200,000 to get your foot in the door.""It is just as cheap to move over to an HCI solution as it is to maintain a legacy system.""VxRail is very cost-effective and affordable in the long term. It is more recommended when it comes to financial life, but it may depend upon the license. VxRail comes with VMware licensing, which may not be that cost-effective as compared to others. When it comes to HyperFlex, they need the labor to deploy Hyper-V, Citrix, or any other hypervisor.""It's a mandatory cost with everything included""I live in Brazil, and my customers are from Brazil. It is quite an expensive solution. It is more expensive than the traditional environment.""The price would be in the middle to the expensive range. It is not cheap.""At about $200,000, this solution is a little bit pricey but it is more economical than others such as Nutanix or Cisco Hyperflex.""VxRail is not cheap, but it's not expensive either."
