We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Virtual SAN runs on iSCSI, which is free and easy to configure. It's easy to manage from StarWind's GUI console, and it only required a few extra switch ports.""It's quite easy to install.""StarWind Virtual SAN for vSphere is a software-defined storage solution that has reduced administration time for storage. It's pretty straightforward to install and setup it and so far it has been robust and worked as advertised from StarWind.""PowerShell library is pretty good feature as I created with APC PowerChute a script to put volumes on maintenance mode then turning off the StarWind nodes together with the VM and Hosts when UPS reaches 15 percent, this way after a blackout or electrical problems when turning servers on again, there is no issues for syncing or data loss due to energy interrupts.""Having the ability to scale horizontally if needed is a huge plus for future growth.""Speed and high availability have been the most valuable for us.""The ability to run the software virtually on every virtualization platform and the ability to eliminate all storage vendor locking are the most valuable features.""A great feature is that I basically set it and forget it, as everything is automatic."

"The most valuable features of SimpliVity are the built-in backup and immunity to ransomware.""The setup is very easy.""SimpliVity helps us to manage and has made deduplication work really well.""The solution is scalable.""The interface is very good and is very easy to navigate. You can find everything you need from one central place.""The most valuable feature is high availability.""The HCI concept by itself is the most valuable feature of the solution. It is a full-fledged HCI. It is the main component. I think this is what makes the project valuable.""There is no single feature that's the most valuable. All of SimpliVity's components work together to make daily operations easier for our customers."

More HPE SimpliVity Pros →

"VxRail is a simple, efficient solution. It's easy to upgrade and scale the solution. If we increase our user base, we can easily scale it out. We have several thousand using it now.""One beneficial feature is that the solution can handle complex environments.""The stability is very nice. We haven't had any issues with the cluster. The cluster is very stable. No problems with slowness. Everything has been stable. It was well-architectured.""It's very easy to upgrade.""The updating of the features was one aspect of the solution that made us decide to use it.""The support has been excellent, especially if you compare it to IBM.""VxRail can manage the whole cluster at the same time, so it's easy to expand. VxRail has more features vSAN ReadyNodes that make it easier to implement from scratch.""A valuable feature of the solution is that it allows everything to be integrated into a single model, comprised of hardware and software."

Cons
"This product would benefit from having automated alerting functionality.""We would like the documentation to be more complete. Most items are covered, but if you don't know something, you may need to contact their support.""I see no need for major improvements but there could be some improvements in the form of notifications and the simplifying of maintenance mode.""Perhaps more reporting features on the utilization, usage, and performance of the configured high-availability images and underlying physical disks would be helpful.""Being able to run StarWind vSAN on top of any free UNIX operating system to build a resilient iSCSI/FTP/SMB storage system would be useful.""I wish the sync after a failure, such as hardware failure or power-related issues, for example, was faster.""It would be helpful if StarWind provided more precise and detailed documentation explaining how to configure the solution in various scenarios, including the advantages and disadvantages of each.""When StarWind Virtual SAN for vSphere nodes go offline unexpectedly, the nodes have to re-sync disks fully which takes a long time. We had a power failure and when both nodes came online, VMware vSphere didn't see StarWind disks before I manually re-scanned them form ESXi administration console even though it should happen automatically"

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"It would be better if it could integrate more easily with other vendors.""There is room for improvement in the operations area because the support for that server space is minimal.""The solution could improve by adding better support of the VMware add-ons and a more intuitive user interface for administrators.""HPE SimpliVity should cost less.""It is not so cheap, and this is the most common complaint that my customers have. It is a very good product, but the price is an issue in Latin America. VMware is a de facto tool. It would be useful for customers if HP can also use Red Hat or any other open-source virtualization product. Currently, you can only use VMware to manage the machines inside SimpliVity.""Once I am onto the SimpliVity environment, I always have to go with HP because I am somewhat blocked, like Apple. Secondly, if I want to increase only storage, I need to buy an entire computing node for that, an entire HCI node.""Not a lean architecture in terms of anything.""Its performance can be faster."

More HPE SimpliVity Cons →

"Deployment was not initially straightforward for us. We had an incompatibility issue that was very difficult for Dell Professional Service to solve.""You have to buy a new server if you want to scale up.""I can't speak to any missing features or weak aspects of the system just yet. We haven't had a chance to really dig in.""Some of the features of the hyperconverged infrastructure could be integrated with external storage. Right now, for example, if I have surveillance going, I need to purchase very cheap storage. So, an integration between the hyperconverged infrastructure and external storage would be good.""The most important thing that I want to be included in this solution is the VMware license. Its deployment time can be quicker so that instead of 40 minutes, it takes 10 minutes.""The technical support is good but could be better.""VxRail could be easier to set up. It's tricky to configure the network properly and match the requirements.""Sometimes during the upgrade process of VxRail, we experience errors that have nothing to do with reality and I cannot troubleshoot them without calling Dell and bringing in an engineer to figure it out."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The cost, including OPEX, is lower compared to other solutions."
  • "This is the best priced solution for an SMB."
  • "The premium support from StarWinds is a must have. The ability to have access to a storage engineer 24/7 is a must for a production environment."
  • "The cost seems a bit steep, and I wish it was less expensive."
  • "I think the bang for the buck is much better with StarWind Virtual SAN."
  • "I think that purchasing StarWind Virtual SAN Professional Edition would be optimal for most."
  • "The setup cost, pricing, and licensing are very straightforward. They are exactly what you expect."
  • "The cost was ultimately low to implement, which allowed us to be 3-2-1 complaint."
  • More StarWind Virtual SAN Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "It is not too expensive, but it is quite expensive for me."
  • "It is expensive for this market. Everyone says that it is a very good product, but the only complaint is about the price."
  • "We bought this solution as a package that included all of the hardware and all of the software."
  • "The price is one of the biggest problems our customers have."
  • "The licensing is on a yearly basis. The licensing cost also includes vCenter at a cost in the cloud solution."
  • "The hardware is expensive. For the same price, Cisco can provide more hardware specifications for us."
  • "The solution can be expensive if you are using a lot of nodes."
  • "The product is expensive."
  • More HPE SimpliVity Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "A typical node that I would sell to a customer has a list price be between $80,000 and $100,000 per node. Organizations typically start with four nodes. That's the hardware, software, VMware licensing, everything. Customers typically pay about half of that - approximately $45,000 to $50,000 a node. On average, it costs about $200,000 to get your foot in the door."
  • "It is just as cheap to move over to an HCI solution as it is to maintain a legacy system."
  • "VxRail is very cost-effective and affordable in the long term. It is more recommended when it comes to financial life, but it may depend upon the license. VxRail comes with VMware licensing, which may not be that cost-effective as compared to others. With VMware, it's an auto check competition. VMware is an expensive solution, especially for Nutanix. Nutanix have their own hypervisor called Acronis, which is very cost-effective against the VMware. Nutanix is cheaper for the hardware but not for the software. If you ask the Nutanix partners to deploy Nutanix over Cisco servers or Dell EMC servers, the cost will be higher. Nutanix wants to compete financially. Therefore, they propose their software over the Supermicro server, which is a very cheap Chinese server. In fact, I don't like their terms of service. HyperFlex has the highest price, and it is very expensive. I don't know why. It may be because this is a UCS system, which comes from Cisco and is already expensive. When it comes to HyperFlex, they need the labor to deploy Hyper-V, Citrix, or any other hypervisor."
  • "It's a mandatory cost with everything included"
  • "I live in Brazil, and my customers are from Brazil. It is quite an expensive solution. It is more expensive than the traditional environment."
  • "The price would be in the middle to the expensive range. It is not cheap."
  • "At about $200,000, this solution is a little bit pricey but it is more economical than others such as Nutanix or Cisco Hyperflex."
  • "VxRail is not cheap, but it's not expensive either."

VxRail is an all-in-one solution: "You don't have to worry too much about the hardware and you don't have to work on integrating a storage device. We instead have this as an all-in-one solution and everything is available as a box."

VxRail is remarkable: “The cover points feature in VxRail is remarkable. It's unique. It has an intervention failover system as well as an automatic failover system, reaching clusters existing in VxRail…

VxRail is a powerful performer: “...VxRail delivers a very high number of IOPS for a hybrid configuration or an all-flash configuration. The processors that are available in the Xeon family are very powerful. They are multi-core with typically 2 gigahertz, 2.4 gigahertz, or higher frequency, so the performance is very much appreciated.”
