We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
"There's lots of flexibility in how we use the resources while also maintaining a small footprint.""The high performance is very valuable, as well as the enterprise reliability features.""We have been able to consolidate storage into Pavilion. Pavilions are our only SANs because it is a bring your own disk solution. When new drives come out, we are able to take out half of the drives in the system, put in new drives, move our VMs over to the new drives, take the other drives out, and populate those with new drives. Then, we are suddenly twice as dense as we were before. NVMe flash is only going to get denser and cheaper so we can make use of that every couple of years by just throwing newer disks into it at a fraction of the cost of a new SAN."

"Generally stable with good technical support.""OceanStor is cheaper than Dell EMC, and its management interface is quite simple.""The setup and the price are the most valuable and not the features related.""The solution is easy to scale as needed.""Excellent and efficient support, and the product is a good price.""Great value for money.""We get a quick response in case any component defaults. We have seen the benefits mostly.""Huawei OceanStor is stable."

"Pure Storage is extremely reliable — it's never failed.""This solution is very scalable.""We've had different types of storage, and three things of this solution are valuable. The first one is its outstanding performance. The second one is its stability. In the about three years that we've had it, we've had component failures, but we never had a service interruption or any data loss. The third one, which is really critical, is that it is super easy to use in terms of provisioning, storage, and managing the arrays. I'm able to maintain a multi-site environment with a couple of dozen arrays with a single mid-level storage admin.""It's very fast and very easy to use. It performs well and is both flexible and compatible. We like it because it's easy to use.""FlashArray has many valuable features. It's very user-friendly and it has high availability, so there is comparatively less downtime. During maintenance, there is no shutdown procedure, so you can directly power off the Array and manage the shutdown process without any data loss, which is a unique feature. Managing replication and data migration is also very easy.""We're getting good performance, and the compression ratio is also very good in Pure Storage FlashArray.""At this point, I don't know anything that they could provide in a better way.""I use all the features of this solution and I find them to be easy to use and functional, such as the compression and capacity to expand."

Cons
"I would like to see the management layer improved.""In our current configuration, we can only run the line controllers in high availability, active-standby mode, whereas we would like to see active-active implemented.""The rail system that Pavilion uses to mount up into a standard Dell or APC cabinet extends further back than normal rails, and they cover up the zero PDU slot. So, I don't like the rail system that comes with the device. That is my biggest complaint."

"CFS integration is one area where OceanStor has some room for improvement. The CFS on OceanStor is dedicated, so it's not integrated with the existing active directory domain.""Technical support could be more helpful.""Huawei is not that cheap.""The technical support has been a let down for us. It's something the company has to work on. We haven't been satisfied with their level of service.""Integration with mainstream solution technologies could be better.""The user interface is not so user friendly.""I would like to see the next generation all-flash, which could be combined.""Could have a more stable, lighter Metro and better logging system."

"When we were doing some tests, we found that there was an I/O freeze when they were switching the controller.""I feel like there is too much automation; the user doesn't have any manual input.""I think replication is one area that still needs improvement. Earlier, Pure Storage FlashArray only had IP-based replication. There was no API-based replication, but they have enhanced the feature now. However, they need to work on API replication for C-type of arrays.""Its price needs improvement. Its price is almost double than any other flash storage solution.""There are many features which need to be added, particularly on the replication side.""The price should be lower.""The problem is that we can only make a few groups, around five or six groups. I like groups and we need a lot of them. We had to put all the information in only a few groups and cannot make a more detailed separation of them.""The solution is not cheap."

Pricing and Cost Advice
"The licensing fees are very reasonable.""This is hardware. They have a singular array that you can populate with your own disk, or you can buy the disks through them. For controllers, you pay for the components inside of the SAN, but there is only one chassis that they work with."

"Huawei OceanStor is priced very well but is a bit complicated.""The price of the solution could be less expensive. However, there are not any licensing costs."

"Pure is typically more expensive than everyone else. You get what you pay for, but I have lost deals to similar solutions because of pricing. They include everything, and that's another positive about Pure Storage. They aren't trying to nickel and dime their customers for different features. It is all included in one price. The license is by capacity, and the price depends on the capacity and the discount we're getting from the vendor. You get the SKU of the physical appliance, support, and maintenance, and that's it. You're licensed for whatever feature they offer. It is all rolled up into the price of the appliance.""My organization has a yearly license, but I believe that Pure Storage FlashArray has capacity-based licenses as well. I'm definitely happy with the pricing.""Its price is almost double than any other flash storage solution.""I think that the pricing is less expensive compared to other standard products in the market today. Even the support contract and maintenance services cost less when compared to market-leading products like EMC.""There is an annual or perpetual license required for this solution.""The price, in general, is around $100,000, however, I know it costs more.""We do not incur additional costs beyond the licensing fee.""When we bought the unit, we bought per capacity. So, the licensing is per capacity, and the only thing that we have to buy every year or every three years is maintenance. Included in that maintenance is the upgrade of the controllers every three years at no cost to us."
