Quotes From Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
"The support with Microsoft is great.""The solution has an easy setup.""Microsoft's a good name for legacy support and solutions""The most valuable features are ease of use, and it gets the job done in a straightforward manner.""The solution is highly stable.""I like that it's easy to use.""The solution allows us to take advantage of our physical environment.""The performance is very good."

"The ease of deployment is very good.""It is 100% stable. It's the most stable infrastructure that we have.""Ability to create multiple VMs.""It supports multi-cloud integration that includes AWS, Google, and Azure.""The initial setup is straightforward.""We really love the Lifecycle manager and one-click upgrades.""In the world of IT operations, there is a lot of noise. Traditionally, systems would generate a great deal of alerts, events, and notifications, often leading to the operator either a) not seeing critical alerts since they are lost in the noise or b) disregarding the alerts/events.""Technical support is okay."

Cons
"It should be deployed with OS so there is no need to install OS separately, only select the OS and get it ready.""The Hyper-V management console could be improved to make it easier. It should be a little bit more granular. Various virtual switches could also be improved to make virtual desk management slightly better. The replication could be improved slightly. The checkpoints or snapshots could be improved to make it a bit more transparent to the user.""Failure capabilities are insufficient for disaster recovery.""It would be nice if they had video acceleration, they got rid of that and VMware has video acceleration.""The solution is heavily reliant on Microsoft's active directory for authentication, for coordination between nodes. Therefore, it inherits all the issues that are within the active directory.""If a person has never implemented the solution before, they might find the process difficult.""The management interface is in need of the biggest improvement.""The product can be a bit difficult to use."

More Hyper-V Cons »

"It was not a great fit for really large databases that required high-end or lots of compute. They might already have addressed this concern around very high-end databases that require high-end compute. In the past, it wasn't a great fit for them.""I would like to see official compatibility with Red Hat in the future.""I'd like it to be more API-based.""The ability to create clusters faster would be nice to see in a future release.""While the customer support is truly incredible, for Spanish speakers it would be appropriate to have support in their native language to further improve problem-solving conditions.""In the future, I would like to see integration with external storage using the fiber channel""This product would be improved if it included a hybrid cloud solution.""Some clients find the solution's cost to be too high."

Pricing and Cost Advice
"This is a fairly expensive product because it balances the needs of security.""Microsoft Hyper-V is not expensive and is easy to set up.""I recommend Hyper-V to customers with budget constraints.""There is a license required to use Hyper-V and there are bundle packages you can purchase making it cheaper than other solutions, such as VMware. Additionally, if there is a lot of guest OS that requires Windows, then Microsoft becomes cheaper.""If you have the standard edition of Windows server then with each copy of the operating system, you have two virtual machines for free.""There is a license required for this solution. I would recommend purchasing the support.""We previously used VMware, but we switched because Hyper-V is cheaper and delivers the same stability for less money.""The licensing costs depend on the environment you have. If you have an environment of less than 10 or 30 VMs, It's nice to have a Hyper-V, but if you have more than 100 or 200, I would recommend using VCenter, VMware virtualization, especially for an on-premise solution."

"The licensing costs are a bit expensive but when you compare the features, it's reasonable.""Our Nutanix license is for five years. There is a support arrangement there, but that aspect is more or less taken care of during the initial installation. With HCI architecture, whenever we do any kind of auto scaling or scaling of servers and resources, there is a significant amount of software licensing involved.""This product is less expensive than some of the competing HCI solutions.""We got the renewal done recently, and there was no cost involved.""This product is expensive, but they do have discounts. At one point, I saw that they were giving a 70% or 80% discount, which is a good thing, but maybe they should have a more realistic price and then a 5% to 10% discount.""There is a license required for this solution and my clients usually purchase a two-year license with extended support. The price of the solution could be reduced, it is more expensive than competitors.""The setup cost, pricing, and licensing are very competitive and TCO is very low compared to three-tier solutions.""Its licensing model is easy, but the bad thing is that we need to pay for the whole capacity at once. With VMware vSAN, we only have to pay for the capacity that we are using, which is not the case with Nutanix. So, we have more overhead for the licensing cost with Nutanix."

Overview

Hyper-V is a native hypervisor for x86-64 systems, enabling platform virtualization. It is a Microsoft product that comes in two forms. One form is Hyper-V as a standalone product, known as Hyper-V Server (Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 is the latest version). The other form is as a role to be installed in Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 R2, or the x64 version of Window 8 Pro. No matter what form it takes, Hyper-V gives you the services and tools required to create a virtualized server environment.

Hyper-V creates a cost-effective, stable and productive server virtualization environment by running multiple operating systems, such as Windows, Linux, and more, in parallel on one server.

Some of the business benefits of installing Hyper-V include:

  • Create a private cloud environment or expand an existing one.
  • Optimize hardware utilization and minimize resource consumption by consolidating servers in the form of virtual machines on one physical host.
  • Improvement of business continuity.
  • Virtual Desktop Infrastructure creation or expansion.
  • Greater efficiency for test and development activities.
