Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"In the past, one of the most valuable features, and the biggest advantage, was the incremental forever feature. Not many other backup vendors provided that. In the pre-virtualization environment, it was very robust and simple technology, especially writing to tape.""IBM Spectrum Protect offers stable software and products.""You can scale the product.""We have been using it for several years, and it is quite reliable and predictable. We are quite comfortable with this solution. They're coming up with new features as well. It has good scalability, and it provides good integrations with business-critical applications or databases, such as SAP HANA. It works as expected, and we don't see any issues.""In general, the solution is quite user-friendly. The GUI is very nice.""I find the whole product useful. The backup archive client, snapshot, spectrum for virtual environments are beneficial features.""SPIR is Instant Recovery for Spectrum Protect. It sends snapshots using space efficiently and blocking backups to the Spectrum Protect server. It provisions the snapshot from the backup server to the same or new server near instantly.""IBM support is friendly, knowledgeable, and they always respond quickly. They've always been able to find the cause of my problem."

"The initial setup and deployment are easy. It's straightforward.""I like the incremental backups and their failover.""The most valuable feature is the ability to pick up individual files.""It's simple to use."

Cons
"They should introduce more features for virtualization platforms and backing up IBMs. Backup speeds should also be improved.""They can include more cloud-enriching features. I would like IBM Spectrum Protect to have the functionality for backing up a VM directly in Azure. I would like to be able to back up a VM directly in Azure without spinning up a Hyper-V cluster and backing up the virtual server.""They do not have a unified GUI, they only work on CLI and operations center, which is really complicated for the installation and configuration.""They took some of the funding off of it for a while. Therefore, instead of being a market leader, they took their position for granted. Then some competitors developed new bells and whistles that they advertise, and due to that lag a few years ago, there are not the resources to explain the differences.""The installation process could be simplified.""Its price can be better. It is very expensive. Its interface is very old and not user friendly. They can improve its interface. Their support can also be better. My clients are not very satisfied with the support because they are not really quick.""The initial setup is complex.""The interface could be more user-friendly."

"The solution is pretty stable right now, however, we believe that the solution could be made to be even more stable.""There isn't much to improve. They just need to follow the trend or the development of other Linux products. Follow in terms of making the product compatible with new versions of Linux. They just need to include as many versions for Linux as possible.""The integration needs improvement.""They could be more customer-friendly."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The licensing fees are between $8,000 and $10,000 per year."
  • "IBM provides an open license policy, which is more like a gentlemen's agreement."
  • "One can go with either a PVU licensing model or a capacity based licensing model. Either solution does not block the usage, if over used."
  • "It is fairly reasonable as compared to other solutions in the market."
  • "We have capacity licensing. We use the front end. The capacity licensing is pretty okay on the licensing price. I used to use the old PVU-based licensing in the early environment, but now we use capacity-based licensing."
  • "It is really expensive. Its price is not good for Latin America. Its price is good for the United States or Europe."
  • "It is expensive."
