Quotes From Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
"The most important feature is the intensive way you can troubleshoot Cisco Firepower Firewalls. You can go to the bit level to see why traffic is not handled in the correct way, and the majority of the time it's a networking issue and not a firewall issue. You can solve any problem without Cisco TAC help, because you can go very deeply under the hood to find out how traffic is flowing and whether it is not flowing as expected. That is something I have never seen with other brands.""The solution offers very easy configurations.""Feature-wise, we mostly use IPS because it is a security requirement to protect against attacks from outside and inside. This is where IPS helps us out a bunch.""Another benefit has been user integration. We try to integrate our policies so that we can create policies based on active users. We can create policies based on who is accessing a resource instead of just IP addresses and ports.""It is one of the fastest solutions, if not the fastest, in the security technology space. This gives us peace of mind knowing that as soon as a new attack comes online that we will be protected in short order. From that perspective, no one really comes close now to Firepower, which is hugely valuable to us from an upcoming new attack prevention perspective.""The Adversity Malware Protection (AMP) feature is the most valuable. It is also very easy to use. Every technical user can operate this solution without any difficulty. The dashboard of Cisco Firepower has every tool that a security operator needs. You can find every resource that you need to operate through this dashboard.""One of the most valuable features is the AMP. It's very good and very reliable when it comes to malicious activities, websites, and viruses.""Web filtering is a big improvement for us. The previous version we used, the AC520, did not have that feature included. It was not very easy for us, especially because the environment had to be isolated and we needed to get updates from outside, such as Windows patches. That feature has really helped us when we are going outside to pull those patches."

"I'm told the solution is the fastest, and, so far, I do find that to be the case.""It's a very powerful solution and the firewalls offer high performance""The dashboard, customization, API, and pricing are good.""It is deployed on the customer site, and we manage the firewalls on this side.""The initial setup is pretty simple.""Juniper is more flexible with the commit check and the commit confirmed command. The design of the forwarding and contract plan in the operating system is very important for the performance when we have very big traffic."

"It has a very nice web interface, and it is very simple to use. The way policies are working is also good.""It has a good web cache. I used to use a DHCP server and DNS server. For my company, I use pfSense as a load balancing application.""I have found the firewall portion for the blocking most valuable.""The solution is fairly scalable when it comes to integrating with other applications and data sets.""The main features of this solution are customization and ease to use.""I have found pfSense to be stable.""What I found most valuable is the cost of the platform, the flexibility of the platform, and the fact that the ongoing fees are not there as they are with the competitor. Some people may think you're taking a risk with using Opensource. I think it just provides the end user, specifically for us small, medium business providers of services, the flexibility we need at the right cost to provide them a higher end, almost enterprise type service.""We like the fact that the product is open-source. It's free to use. There are no costs associated with it."

Cons
"An area of improvement for this solution is the console visualization.""The Firepower FTD code is missing some old ASA firewalls codes. It's a small thing. But Firepower software isn't missing things that are essential, anymore.""The performance should be improved.""The visibility for VPN is one big part. The policy administration could be improved in terms of customizations and flexibility for changing it to our needs.""The price and SD-WAN capabilities are the areas that need improvement.""The product line does not address the SMB market as it is supposed to do. Cisco already has an on-premises sandbox solution.""It would be great if some of the load times were faster.""The initial setup could be simplified, as it can be complex for new users."

More Cisco Firepower NGFW Firewall Cons »

"Some people complain that the solution tends to have a steep learning curve. It could be because most people have basic familiarity with Cisco or other similar products and maybe have never worked closely with Juniper products.""I would like to see an activity sensor for malicious content or sensor for viruses and malware.""We worked with Cisco's support and Juniper's support and there are some differences, to be honest, Cisco is more available and is more competent at addressing our cases.""It could use more tutorials.""VPN access is an area that needs improvement.""We experienced some technical issues during implementation"

More Juniper vSRX Cons »

"pfSense has some limitations in detecting site sessions. We want to control internet usage based on sites and their content, and pfSense doesn't perform this function.""There's a bit of a learning curve during the initial implementation.""It could use a little bit of improvement in the reporting.""In terms of areas of improvement, the interface seemed like it had a lot. The GUI interface that I had gotten into was rather elaborate. I don't know if they could zero in on some markets and potentially for small, medium businesses specifically, give them a stripped-down version of the GUI for pfSense.""The solution could improve by having centralized management and API support online.""The main problem with pfSense is that it lacks adequate ransomware protection.""The technical support needs to be improved.""The product could offer more integrated plugins."

Pricing and Cost Advice
"Its price is in the middle range. Both Firepower and FortiGate are not cheap. Palo Alto and Check Point are the cheapest ones. I don't remember any costs in addition to the standard licensing fees.""Cisco, as we all know, is expensive, but for the money you are paying, you know that you are also getting top-notch documentation as well as support if needed.""This solution is expensive and other solutions, such as FortiGate, are cheaper.""It definitely competes with the other vendors in the market.""There are additional implementation and validation costs.""I like the Smart Licensing, because it is more dynamic and easier to keep track of where you are at. If we have a high availability firewall pair and they are deployed in active/standby rather than active/active, I would expect that we would only pay for one set of licenses because you are using only one firewall at any one time. The other is there just for resiliency. The licensing, from a Firepower perspective, still requires you to have two licenses, even if the firewalls are in active/standby, which means that you pay for the two licenses, even though you might only be using one firewall any one time. This is probably not the best way to do it and doesn't represent the best value for money. This could be looked at to see if it could be done in a fairer way.""The solution was chosen because of its price compared to other similar solutions.""Pricing is the same as other competitors. It is comparable. The licensing has gotten better. It has been easier with Smart Licensing."

"The pricing is reasonable.""As a customer, the pricing is good for us."

More Juniper vSRX Pricing and Cost Advice »

"Our customers must pay for an annual license.""There is an open-source community version that is available.""It's open-source and it's free. Anything for free is good.""The price of pfSense is reasonable. However, there is a free version available.""I would recommend it for a small business or a startup as a starting point. It's also good for companies that are on a tight budget.""It is an open source firewall.""The solution is free. However, you need to pay for support.""I am using the community version of the solution and it is priced well. There is a cost of learning how to use the solution, if it was free it would be better."
