Quotes From Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
"Updates to server hardware are now painless and done during working hours with zero stress. We had a RAID failure a few months back, and nobody in the building even noticed and there was no after hours time used for repair.""Using our own choice of HW allowed us to price our service to answer our customers' needs.""vSAN we found was simple to set up, easy to configure and manage and allows us to achieve storage redundancy.""This solution enables us to make better cost-effective use of our existing hardware and leverage the current infrastructure at a higher level than we could before.""StarWind Virtual SAN for vSphere is a software-defined storage solution that has reduced administration time for storage. It's pretty straightforward to install and setup it and so far it has been robust and worked as advertised from StarWind.""It's quite easy to install.""The most valuable features are high availability and real-time replication between two servers.""The fact that I can now count on a true failover solution is what is most appealing."

"Nutanix Acropolis AOS is easy to use, integrates with other hardware configurations, and is simple to manage.""In general, being able to patch and not having to pay for SanDisk is the best thing about hyper-converged.""It is all-in-one. The compute processing, storage, and network altogether make it convenient. We don't have to have different modules for expansion.""Nutanix has several unique capabilities to ensure linear scalability.""In the world of IT operations, there is a lot of noise. Traditionally, systems would generate a great deal of alerts, events, and notifications, often leading to the operator either a) not seeing critical alerts since they are lost in the noise or b) disregarding the alerts/events.""One of the main features of the solution is that it works on many hypervisors. It is a big advantage. Additionally, the solution is compatible with VMware and Hyper-V, and the management interface, which is called Prism, is very intuitive and user-friendly.""The most valuable feature I have found to be the Acropolis Hypervisor (AHV).""The ease of deployment is very good."

More Nutanix Acropolis AOS Pros »

"The consolidation of the management in one control point is the most valuable. The whole infrastructure management is consolidated in just one console point. The documentation is also pretty good.""It is stable and scalable.""I like that you can add other types of services.""The most useful feature is the solution's automation in terms of how we are able to spin up a certain workload in real-time when we are doing R&D.""Both the scalability and stability of this solution are excellent."

Cons
"I would like to see different levels of support offered.""Management of VSAN itself could be improved. A Web UI for management would be great rather than an application installation. StarWind is testing a command center virtual appliance that I have installed in my environment.""Android app for monitoring and receiving push notifications as alarms or monitoring I/O from any mobile device could be a good feature and nice to have as we are not always on our desk.""I think the setup could be streamlined a bit.""This product would benefit from having automated alerting functionality.""Performance when in storage-separate configuration needs to be improved.""A mobile app to sync up for overview and status would really be helpful.""StarWind relies on the underlying OS to manage the "SAN files" whether that would be a RAID volume, software RAID (such as LVM), etc. It would be useful if StarWind could incorporate the actual physical drive management inside of the solution, similar to Storage Spaces Direct."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons »

"I think some of the tasks that must be done using CLI could be added to the web interface.""The One-Click Upgrade process could/should offer the ability to integrate with 3rd party drivers. For example, we use NVIDIA Grid graphics cards. It would be amazing if, during the One-Click Upgrade process, we could "slipstream" additional VIB drivers for ESXi into the upgrade process.""In the next release, I would like better and more competitive pricing.""I'm sure there are a lot of things that could be improved, but I'm actually very satisfied with this product. There may be some possibilities to move the virtual server dismounting points or to move the server from one group to another, but I can't think of any special improvements or update features.""Pricing and varieties of options could be better.""I would like to see official compatibility with Red Hat in the future.""The productivity and work efficiency of Nutanix Acropolis AOS could improve.""The cost of the solution is too expensive. There are other options, such as VMware, that are offered for less money. In Latin America, it seems to be overpriced for the market."

More Nutanix Acropolis AOS Cons »

"The licensing policy needs to be improved. They have a licensing policy based on the number of CPU sockets. Nowadays what has happened is that the license they are trying to move is based on the number of CPU cores. With the advancement in technology there are now more cores in a single CPU. It's been very challenging in terms of managing the license around everything. Today we have a processor with 24 and 32 cores on the same physical CPU.""The main issue is the initial investment. It is an expensive product, and it should be cheaper. It should also be easier to use and manage. The professional service for this solution is quite complex and expensive.""It is not user-friendly, and it is very difficult to operate. You have to have a deep understanding of the technical details of the infrastructure to implement it. When you compare it with VMware, it is totally different because the graphical user interface is not that easy to understand. It is not intuitive. To use it, you have to read a lot of documentation and even understand what is going on behind the solution. It is not for someone who has a little bit of knowledge. Currently, it is too complex. I need something that is easy to implement. It should have a basic configuration as well as a complex configuration.""The cloud deployment could be improved.""It should be more user-friendly, in my opinion."

Pricing and Cost Advice
"The cost takes into account the number of nodes, so the size of the storage is not important.""I think the cost of this solution is quite fair.""We found that the pricing was perfect; simple and clear.""If you are looking at a traditional SAN for a small cluster, give StarWind vSAN because you will save thousands without any compromise.""This is the best priced solution for an SMB.""Licensing is easy and the whole package is cost-effective.""The cost, including OPEX, is lower compared to other solutions.""The StarWind VSAN business model is very cost-effective."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Pricing and Cost Advice »

"My advice is to get the ultimate license, as it is worth it.""The pricing of Nutanix is not cheap but there are options available.""The pricing is fair for the package.""The setup cost, pricing, and licensing are very competitive and TCO is very low compared to three-tier solutions.""The price of the solution could improve. Nutanix has recently changed its pricing model from perpetual to subscription. They have identified there are challenges with the pricing model.""There is a license required for this solution and my clients usually purchase a two-year license with extended support. The price of the solution could be reduced, it is more expensive than competitors.""AHV is free! This is a great feature that should be taken advantage of.""Our Nutanix license is for five years. There is a support arrangement there, but that aspect is more or less taken care of during the initial installation. With HCI architecture, whenever we do any kind of auto scaling or scaling of servers and resources, there is a significant amount of software licensing involved."

Overview

For SMB, ROBO, Cloud and Hosting providers, who look to cut down virtualization expenses, our solution is StarWind VSAN. It is software that eliminates any need in physical shared storage by basically “mirroring” internal hard disks and flash between hypervisor servers. There is less hardware to buy in general, consequently less money is spent on purchase and maintenance. The existing hardware is used with maximum efficiency, so there is no money wasted at all.

StarWind Virtual SAN targets those who already have servers, or are bound to a particular vendor list to buy from. In case there is a new virtualization infrastructure to be built from scratch, StarWind offers a much better way – StarWind HyperConverged Appliance. It is a turnkey solution complete with hardware and software, powered by StarWind Virtual SAN. Those who need to build and maintain virtualization infrastructure at little to no expense, may be interested in StarWind Virtual SAN Free.
