Quotes From Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
"When it comes to the integration among Cisco tools, we find it easy. It's a very practical integration with other components as well.""The dashboard is the most important thing. It provides good visibility and makes management easy. Firepower also provides us with good application visibility and control.""Web filtering is a big improvement for us. The previous version we used, the AC520, did not have that feature included. It was not very easy for us, especially because the environment had to be isolated and we needed to get updates from outside, such as Windows patches. That feature has really helped us when we are going outside to pull those patches.""The most important features are the intrusion prevention engine and the application visibility and control. The Snort feature in Firepower is also valuable.""Being able to determine our active users vs inactive users has led us to increased productivity through visibility. Also, if an issue was happening with our throughput, then we wouldn't know without research. Now, notifications are more proactively happening.""The most valuable feature is stability.""One of the most valuable features of Firepower 7.0 is the "live log" type feature called Unified Event Viewer. That view has been really good in helping me get to data faster, decreasing the amount of time it takes to find information, and allowing me to fix problems faster. I've found that to be incredibly valuable because it's a lot easier to get to some points of data now.""The most important feature is the intensive way you can troubleshoot Cisco Firepower Firewalls. You can go to the bit level to see why traffic is not handled in the correct way, and the majority of the time it's a networking issue and not a firewall issue. You can solve any problem without Cisco TAC help, because you can go very deeply under the hood to find out how traffic is flowing and whether it is not flowing as expected. That is something I have never seen with other brands."

"The most valuable features are reporting, the Sensei plugin, and firewall capabilities.""We have found pretty much all the features of the solution to be valuable.""OPNsense is easy to scale when running on the hardware.""The graphic user interface is very good and it is user-friendly which makes the product easy-to-use.""The most valuable features in OPNsense are reporting and visibility.""The VPN server feature is the most valuable. It is integrated with Radius and AAA for doing accounting and authentication. Insight view is also an important feature for me at this time. It allows me to assess our network traffic. I also like the firewall feature. The BSD kernel has a packet filter. It is one of the most solid frameworks for firewalls. Its user interface is one of the best interfaces I have used.""The solution is good for a basic firewall for a small business or for home use.""The system in general is quite flexible."

"While the features are not dissimilar to other brands, configuration is much more simple, which works out great for Indonesian people.""In four steps one can configure the entire firewall.""In terms of the most valuable features, the IPS report is quick and updated. Performance is also valuable.""Sangfor has the best capabilities for securing connections, securing web browsers, securing servers, and general threat protection.""We've found the technical support to be helpful.""It's a very simple to use product."

Cons
"The product line does not address the SMB market as it is supposed to do. Cisco already has an on-premises sandbox solution.""It would be great if some of the load times were faster.""The visibility for VPN is one big part. The policy administration could be improved in terms of customizations and flexibility for changing it to our needs.""In a future release, it would be ideal if they could offer an open interface to other security products so that we could easily connect to our own open industry standard.""One of the few things that are brought up is that for the overall management, it would be great to have a cloud instance of that. And not only just a cloud instance, but one of the areas that we've looked at is using an HA type of cloud. To have the ability to have a device file within a cloud. If we had an issue with one, the other one would pick up automatically.""The Firepower FTD code is missing some old ASA firewalls codes. It's a small thing. But Firepower software isn't missing things that are essential, anymore.""When you make any changes, irrespective of whether they are big or small, Firepower takes too much time. It is very time-consuming. Even for small changes, you have to wait for 60 seconds or maybe more, which is not good. Similarly, when you have many IPS rules and policies, it slows down, and there is an impact on its performance.""The configuration in Firepower Management Center is very slow. Deployment takes two to three minutes. You spend a lot of time on modifications. Whereas, in FortiGate, you press a button, and it takes one second."

More Cisco Firepower NGFW Firewall Cons »

"There are issues with stability and reliability.""The ability to set the VPN IP address would be a welcome addition.""The interface isn't so friendly user. But we have some technicians here who are quite confident with this tool. OPNSense could maybe add sets of rules so it's simpler to manage different groups with particular needs.""The interface needs to be simplified. It is not user-friendly.""The logging could improve in OPNsense.""There should be more technical documentation.""The only thing that I would like to see improved is the Insight or the NetFlow analysis part. It would be good to have the possibility to dig down on the Insight platform. Right now, we can easily do only a few analyses. If this page becomes more powerful, it surely will be a well-adopted platform.""The solution could be more secure."

More OPNsense Cons »

"The solution has too many bugs and these slow down the implementation.""The web interface needs to be improved, making it more user-friendly.""I believe that IAM and NGFW need to merge into a single box, instead of there being two separate box solutions.""Occasional issues with breaches which are dealt with expediently.""They need to increase the number of ports in the firewall."

Pricing and Cost Advice
"For me, personally, as an individual, Cisco Firepower NGFW Firewall is expensive.""When we purchased the firewall, we had to take the security license for IPS, malware protection, and VPN. If we are using high availability, we have to take a license for that. We also have to pay for hardware support and technical support. Its licensing is on a yearly basis.""Pricing is the same as other competitors. It is comparable. The licensing has gotten better. It has been easier with Smart Licensing.""I know that licensing for some of the advanced solutions, like Intrusion Prevention and Secure Malware Analytics, are nominal costs.""The price of Firepower is not bad compared to other products.""When we are fighting against other competitors for customers, whether it is a small or big business, we feel very comfortable with the price that Firepower has today.""This product requires licenses for advanced features including Snort, IPS, and malware detection.""There are additional implementation and validation costs."

"The solution is not expensive.""OPNsense is an open-source solution and it is free to use.""As an appliance, it's in the medium price range.""OPNsense is a well known open-source tool.""It is not an expensive product. Basically, I deployed it because it was the fastest solution to satisfy our needs in open source.""OPNsense is open source software so at this time it is free for us to use."
