Quotes From Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
"Web filtering is a big improvement for us. The previous version we used, the AC520, did not have that feature included. It was not very easy for us, especially because the environment had to be isolated and we needed to get updates from outside, such as Windows patches. That feature has really helped us when we are going outside to pull those patches.""The most valuable feature that Cisco Firepower NGFW provides for us is the Intrusion policy.""I have integrated it for incidence response. If there is a security event, the Cisco firewall will automatically block the traffic, which is valuable.""Firepower NGFW has improved my organization in several ways. Before, we were trying to stamp out security threats and issues, it was a one-off type of way to attack it. I spent a lot of manpower trying to track down the individual issues or flare-ups that we would see. With Cisco's Firepower Management, we're able to have that push up to basically one monitor and one UI and be able to track that and stop threats immediately. It also gives us a little more granularity on what those threats might be.""The solution offers very easy configurations.""The most valuable features of this solution are advanced malware protection, IPS, and IDS.""Being able to determine our active users vs inactive users has led us to increased productivity through visibility. Also, if an issue was happening with our throughput, then we wouldn't know without research. Now, notifications are more proactively happening.""It is one of the fastest solutions, if not the fastest, in the security technology space. This gives us peace of mind knowing that as soon as a new attack comes online that we will be protected in short order. From that perspective, no one really comes close now to Firepower, which is hugely valuable to us from an upcoming new attack prevention perspective."

"The interface and the dashboard are the most valuable features of this solution.""The solution is good for a basic firewall for a small business or for home use.""The most valuable features in OPNsense are reporting and visibility.""The graphic user interface is very good and it is user-friendly which makes the product easy-to-use.""The most valuable features are reporting, the Sensei plugin, and firewall capabilities.""The initial implementation process is simple.""We have found pretty much all the features of the solution to be valuable.""The VPN server feature is the most valuable. It is integrated with Radius and AAA for doing accounting and authentication. Insight view is also an important feature for me at this time. It allows me to assess our network traffic. I also like the firewall feature. The BSD kernel has a packet filter. It is one of the most solid frameworks for firewalls. Its user interface is one of the best interfaces I have used."

"The most valuable features are unified threat management which provides security intelligence and the VPN for both site-to-site and remote access.""It protects against intrusion while allowing needed access.""Its user interface and simplicity are the most favorite parts for our clients. They find it stable and easy to use. Its performance is also good.""It is very user-friendly, and there is no problem in using its interface.""It lets me monitor in live time if someone is 'hogging' bandwidth.""Ease of management and the VPN integration.""The most valuable features are security and technical support.""Good site categorization and application controls."

Cons
"The solution could offer better control that would allow the ability to restrictions certain features from a website.""I would like to see improvement when you create policies on Snort 3 IPS on Cisco Firepower. On Snort 2, it was more like a UI page where you had some multiple choices where you could tweak your config. On Snort 3, the idea is more to build some rules on the text file or JSON file, then push it. So, I would like to see a lot of improvements here.""We're getting support but there's a big delay until we get a response from their technical team. They're in the USA and we're in Africa, so that's the difficulty. When they're in the office, they respond.""FlexConfig is there as a bridge for features that are not yet natively integrated into Firepower. It is a way of allowing you to be able to configure things that wouldn't otherwise be possible until the development team can add them into Firepower's native capability. There is still some work that needs to be done around FlexConfig. There are still quite a few complex things, like policy-based routing, that have to be done in FlexConfig, and it doesn't always work perfectly. Sometimes, there are some glitches. It is recommended that you configure FlexConfig policies with Cisco TAC. It would be good to see Cisco accelerate some of those configurations that you can only do in FlexConfig into the platform, so that they are there natively.""Deploying configurations takes longer than it should.""The visibility for VPN is one big part. The policy administration could be improved in terms of customizations and flexibility for changing it to our needs.""When you make any changes, irrespective of whether they are big or small, Firepower takes too much time. It is very time-consuming. Even for small changes, you have to wait for 60 seconds or maybe more, which is not good. Similarly, when you have many IPS rules and policies, it slows down, and there is an impact on its performance.""They need a VTI. I know it's going to be available in the next software version, which is the 6.7 version. However, the problem with that is that the 6.7 is going to deprecate all the older IKEv1 deployment tunnels. Therefore, the problem is that we have a lot of customers which are using older encryptions. If I do that, update it, it's not going to work for me."

"The solution would not be suitable for anything large-scale.""The solution could be more secure.""The ability to set the VPN IP address would be a welcome addition.""The logging could improve in OPNsense.""The only thing that I would like to see improved is the Insight or the NetFlow analysis part. It would be good to have the possibility to dig down on the Insight platform. Right now, we can easily do only a few analyses. If this page becomes more powerful, it surely will be a well-adopted platform.""The interface isn't so friendly user. But we have some technicians here who are quite confident with this tool. OPNSense could maybe add sets of rules so it's simpler to manage different groups with particular needs.""I would like to see better SD-WAN performance.""There are issues with stability and reliability."

More OPNsense Cons »

"The areas we would like to see improvement include more features available similar to the equivalent FortiGate appliance, e.g. SSL encryption and inspection. Two-factor authentication capability would be another additional feature that could be included in the next release.""The VPN that is available in the new version is a bit bulky and slower in speed.""In general, the company needs to think contingently and integrate more security options.""FortiGate has a client DNS in the firewall, but SonicWall doesn't have that. To create or configure a site-to-site VPN tunnel, we have to give a DNS name. Currently, we have to get the DNS name from a third party and then include it in SonicWall, whereas FortiGate has its own client DNS, so it provides a DNS name, and it does not require a third party. There should be a graphical option to view the network utilization and bandwidth usage.""We have experienced some issues with SonicWall TZ and they are lacking some advanced features other vendors have.""I would like to see lower antivirus pricing.""The price could be better for us in Bolivia.""The monitoring is a little bit confusing."

Pricing and Cost Advice
"When we purchased the firewall, we had to take the security license for IPS, malware protection, and VPN. If we are using high availability, we have to take a license for that. We also have to pay for hardware support and technical support. Its licensing is on a yearly basis.""Cisco pricing is premium. However, they gave us a 50 to 60 percent discount.""Its price is in the middle range. Both Firepower and FortiGate are not cheap. Palo Alto and Check Point are the cheapest ones. I don't remember any costs in addition to the standard licensing fees.""The price of Firepower is not bad compared to other products.""Cisco is not for a small mom-and-pop shop because of the cost, but if you're in a regulated industry where a breach could cost you a million dollars, it's a bargain.""This product requires licenses for advanced features including Snort, IPS, and malware detection.""Cisco, as we all know, is expensive, but for the money you are paying, you know that you are also getting top-notch documentation as well as support if needed.""It definitely competes with the other vendors in the market."

"As an appliance, it's in the medium price range.""OPNsense is open source software so at this time it is free for us to use.""OPNsense is an open-source solution and it is free to use.""It is not an expensive product. Basically, I deployed it because it was the fastest solution to satisfy our needs in open source.""The solution is not expensive.""OPNsense is a well known open-source tool."

More OPNsense Pricing and Cost Advice »

"Customers are required to pay for a yearly subscription.""It is a bit expensive. We have to purchase the license and the reporting part separately, which makes it a bit pricey. This is the main reason why we have thought of moving to another firewall. It would be good if they combine both of these.""You need to purchase multiple licenses to manage multiple devices which is cost-prohibitive for the value you would receive.""The license that we purchased is good for three years.""The price could be better for us in Bolivia.""Its pricing is okay as compared to other solutions.""The price is fair for the solution for the quality you receive.""It has a yearly subscription."
