Quotes From Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
"We have not had to deal with stability issues.""There are no issues that we are aware of. It does its job silently in the background.""The customer service/technical support is very good with this solution.""The most valuable features of this solution are advanced malware protection, IPS, and IDS.""I have integrated it for incidence response. If there is a security event, the Cisco firewall will automatically block the traffic, which is valuable.""Another benefit has been user integration. We try to integrate our policies so that we can create policies based on active users. We can create policies based on who is accessing a resource instead of just IP addresses and ports.""You do not have to do everything through a command line which makes it a lot easier to apply rules.""The implementation is pretty straightforward."

"The built-in open VPN and the VPN Client Export are the solution's most valuable aspects.""A free firewall that is a good network security appliance.""We like the fact that the product is open-source. It's free to use. There are no costs associated with it.""The most valuable features of pfSense are the reports, monitoring, filtration, and blocking incoming and outgoing traffic.""We've found the stability to be very good overall.""The solution is very robust.""The main features of this solution are customization and ease to use.""It works. I put pfSense in, and it works. I can't think of any trouble I ever had with it. It runs on heat-sensitive appliances. They don't need a fan, so they don't overheat. It is affordable, fast, and very high-speed. It is built on BSD Unix, and it pretty much runs on any Intel processor."

"A very robust product.""Easily manageable in a variety of environments.""I like that it works fine. Stormshield is a very good solution.""I like how you can configure the rules. There is the task for the rules and a task for the network configuration. It also provides SMD filtering, and it can be integrated with the active directory for the users, their mission, and the VPN configuration. We are here in Sudan, and Stormshield didn't work in Sudan for more than a decade. Stormshield is a very strong firewall and very easy to configure and maintain. I am just working with the firewall solution, and we don't have any other solutions like endpoint solutions or something like that."

Cons
"Deploying configurations takes longer than it should.""The initial setup can be a bit complex for those unfamiliar with the solution.""This product is managed using the Firepower Management Center (FMC), but it would be better if it also supported the command-line interface (CLI).""One issue with Firepower Management Center is deployment time. It takes seven to 10 minutes and that's a long time for deployment. In that amount of time, management or someone else can ask me to change something or to provide permissions, but during that time, doing so is not possible. It's a drawback with Cisco. Other vendors, like Palo Alto or Fortinet do not have this deployment time issue.""On the VPN side, Firepower could be better. It needs more monitoring on VPNs. Right now, it's not that good. You can set up a VPN in Firepower, but you can't monitor it.""The configuration in Firepower Management Center is very slow. Deployment takes two to three minutes. You spend a lot of time on modifications. Whereas, in FortiGate, you press a button, and it takes one second.""The solution could offer better control that would allow the ability to restrictions certain features from a website.""We're getting support but there's a big delay until we get a response from their technical team. They're in the USA and we're in Africa, so that's the difficulty. When they're in the office, they respond."

More Cisco Firepower NGFW Firewall Cons »

"It could use a little bit of improvement in the reporting.""If a user doesn't have a large amount of experience in Linux systems, they will have problems using this solution. Users need to be highly skilled in troubleshooting competency. Users who do not have such skills will find the product difficult to use.""The access control aspect of the product could be improved.""Layer 7 advanced firewall features are not included in the solution.""pfSense could improve by having a sandboxing feature that I have seen in SonicWall. However, maybe it is available I am not aware of it.""The VPN feature of the solution could improve by adding better functionality and providing easier configure ability.""Lacks instructional videos.""The usage reports can be better."

More pfSense Cons »

"It could be better if it were more user-friendly. It's too complicated for us to use it. The price could be better as well.""The SD card could be more secure.""Improvement is needed in terms of the technical support of the manufacturer.""The filtering configuration could be better. We have some difficulties with the filtering configuration and the filter extension. It's not that easy. It's not that straightforward. In the next release, I would like to see a reporting system. Stormshield doesn't have any tutorials on how to do the configuration and things like that. They just have documentation on the website. If you want to configure, for example, Cisco or Fortinet, you can find tutorials on YouTube. They show you how to configure the features, and so on. In Stormshield, there is nothing on social media or the internet on how to configure different things. The lack of documentation or the lack of material makes it difficult for others to adopt this solution."

Pricing and Cost Advice
"This product is expensive.""The price is comparable.""The solution was chosen because of its price compared to other similar solutions.""Cisco is not for a small mom-and-pop shop because of the cost, but if you're in a regulated industry where a breach could cost you a million dollars, it's a bargain.""The price for Firepower is more expensive than FortiGate. The licensing is very complex. We usually ask for help from Solutel because of its complexity. I have a Cisco account where I can download the VPN client, then connect. Instead, I create an issue with Solutel, then Solutel solves the case.""When we are fighting against other competitors for customers, whether it is a small or big business, we feel very comfortable with the price that Firepower has today.""It definitely competes with the other vendors in the market.""I know that licensing for some of the advanced solutions, like Intrusion Prevention and Secure Malware Analytics, are nominal costs."

"I like the fact that it is open-source.""pfSense is an open-source solution and free to use.""We are using the open-source version which is free. We are testing the solution to see if we are going to go to the enterprise version which requires a license and is not free.""I would recommend it for a small business or a startup as a starting point. It's also good for companies that are on a tight budget.""Its price is pretty fair.""pfSense is open-source, but the support is something that the customer pays for.""This solution provides enterprise-level features at a fraction of the cost of an enterprise firewall.""There is an open-source community version that is available."

"We bought a three-year license, and we renew it whenever it expires. The price could be better. It's always very expensive.""I think the price is good."
