We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
"StarWind vSAN has allowed us to leverage our server infrastructure more completely without the need to add more hardware.""Having the ability to scale horizontally if needed is a huge plus for future growth.""PowerShell library is pretty good feature as I created with APC PowerChute a script to put volumes on maintenance mode then turning off the StarWind nodes together with the VM and Hosts when UPS reaches 15 percent, this way after a blackout or electrical problems when turning servers on again, there is no issues for syncing or data loss due to energy interrupts.""A typical system administrator with minimal experience in Hyper-V, VMware, or Windows can do VSAN configuration and maintain VSAN operations.""It has a nice, simple control panel. You can clearly see the state and health of storage along with the synchronization.""StarWind Virtual SAN for vSphere is a software-defined storage solution that has reduced administration time for storage. It's pretty straightforward to install and setup it and so far it has been robust and worked as advertised from StarWind.""The management interface on the software is very simple. It is insanely simple compared to most SANs. The interface is also powerful when used to complete tasks that an IT administrator needs to complete.""The most valuable features are high availability and real-time replication between two servers."

"The interface is very user-friendly.""The Continuous Data Protection (CDP) feature is one of the good features.""It is flexible like a hyper-convergence system. You can add nodes, and you can scale to have better performance and stability. I also like the backup feature, the recovery system, and the web interface GUI to handle everything.""I would rate the user-friendliness an eight out of ten.""Sangfor has many solutions, and you can easily manage their machine servers with just one management. They're always striving for greatness, and they continuously update their products. For example, they have now built endpoint security within the firewall. They are continuously improving not only the security but also all other products."

Cons
"Being able to run StarWind vSAN on top of any free UNIX operating system to build a resilient iSCSI/FTP/SMB storage system would be useful.""I see no need for major improvements but there could be some improvements in the form of notifications and the simplifying of maintenance mode.""A great feature would be a wizard and to include a new disk in the SAN. At the moment, including a new disk requires several steps - some that must be done at the OS level and others in each node.""Although minor, some of the documentation could be rewritten to be clearer.""In the next release, they could make some graphs of the real-time loading, speed of storage, and interfaces. Of course, these can be viewed in other places. But, in the event of a malfunction or troubleshooting, this would be convenient.""We would like the documentation to be more complete. Most items are covered, but if you don't know something, you may need to contact their support.""It would be nice to add the ability to use raw partitions instead of file containers.""I would like to see options for automated notifications of any changes, including, for example, synchronization issues."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons »

"As far as I know, no hyper-convergence solution includes security, so you have to buy security from another brand. For example, you buy SimpliVity or Nutanix. They don't really have a security solution inside the product. It would be good if there is a security solution inside this solution so that it is not only for the virtualization of CPU, RAM, disk, and network but also for security.""It can have more compatibility and new features. I would also like to see better performance. Some of the other HCI solutions already provide the SSD and flash storage and much higher Intel processors. Sangfor HCI can improve on that.""Its virtual machine tools can be improved. These tools should be enhanced for use in other applications and operating systems, such as Linux.""The error reporting needs to be improved.""Sangfor does not support a SAS configuration, which is something that we would like."

More Sangfor HCI Cons »

"I've had so many issues with the sales team when I was looking to make some improvements, and improve the performance. They would create so many excuses to force me to buy new nodes all the time and not let me add more memory to each node.""Scale HC3 improvements would involve literally fixing up the replication."

Pricing and Cost Advice
"The setup cost, pricing, and licensing are very straightforward. They are exactly what you expect.""Licensing is easy and the whole package is cost-effective.""I think the cost of this solution is quite fair.""StarWind is a low-cost, full-featured alternative to the traditional SAN environment, and their support will guide you every step of the setup.""The cost seems a bit steep, and I wish it was less expensive.""This solution is very accessible and the pro-level for support is well worth the cost.""The support contract is well worth it. The price for it was very reasonable and their team has been very engaged whenever we reach out.""This solution has competitive prices and the implementation is very easy."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Pricing and Cost Advice »

"The pricing of Sangfor is very competitive.""Its price should be better, but I don't think they will change the price list. You have to pay for licenses, and you have to pay for support, so you have an annual fee. You can use the product without the fee, but it's really dumb because you need support. We are an IT company. We provide the product, and we need the support too for our customers.""It is in the middle range as compared to other hyper-converged infrastructure solutions. There is a three-year warranty on the hardware. The license also includes other features. Sangfor has included Continuous Data Protection (CDP) and a built-in firewall with the license. Other top brands, such as VxRail and VMware, require a separate license for such features.""The price of Sangfor is cheaper than other competing products."

Overview

For SMB, ROBO, Cloud and Hosting providers, who look to cut down virtualization expenses, our solution is StarWind VSAN. It is software that eliminates any need in physical shared storage by basically “mirroring” internal hard disks and flash between hypervisor servers. There is less hardware to buy in general, consequently less money is spent on purchase and maintenance. The existing hardware is used with maximum efficiency, so there is no money wasted at all.

StarWind Virtual SAN targets those who already have servers, or are bound to a particular vendor list to buy from. In case there is a new virtualization infrastructure to be built from scratch, StarWind offers a much better way – StarWind HyperConverged Appliance. It is a turnkey solution complete with hardware and software, powered by StarWind Virtual SAN. Those who need to build and maintain virtualization infrastructure at little to no expense, may be interested in StarWind Virtual SAN Free.
