We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:
"The implementation is pretty straightforward."
"One of the nice things about Firepower is that you can set it to discover the environment. If that is happening, then Firepower is learning about every device, software operating system, and application running inside or across your environment. Then, you can leverage the discovery intelligence to get Firepower to select the most appropriate intrusion prevention rules to use for your environment rather than picking one of the base policies that might have 50,000 IPS rules in it, which can put a lot of overhead on your firewall. If you choose the recommendations, as long as you update them regularly, you might be able to get your rule set down to only 1,000 or 1,500, which is a significant reduction in a base rule set. This means that the firewall will give you better performance because there are less rules being checked unnecessarily. That is really useful."
"The most valuable features of this solution are advanced malware protection, IPS, and IDS."
"Provides good integrations and reporting."
"When it comes to the integration among Cisco tools, we find it easy. It's a very practical integration with other components as well."
"The most valuable feature that Cisco Firepower NGFW provides for us is the Intrusion policy."
"If you compare the ASA and the FirePOWER, the best feature with FirePOWER is easy to use GUI. It has most of the same functionality in the Next-Generation FirePOWER, such as IPS, IPS policies, security intelligence, and integration and identification of all the devices or hardware you have in your network. Additionally, this solution is user-friendly."
"The customer service/technical support is very good with this solution."
"It protects against intrusion while allowing needed access."
"Its user interface and simplicity are the most favorite parts for our clients. They find it stable and easy to use. Its performance is also good."
"I've found the technical support to be helpful."
"SonicWall TZ is a stable product."
"With the main firewall routing there, we can do connectivity point-to-point. On the low bandwidth we can connect in all the branches with my corporate office."
"Good site categorization and application controls."
"The installation is straightforward and took approximately 30 minutes."
"Offers the right amount of control without being incredibly convoluted and frustrating."
"The ease of use is most valuable. You can quickly train someone who hasn't seen a firewall in life. You can get people up to speed, and in a few months, they are able to manage this product very easily. It is a very user-friendly, scalable, and stable product. Its price is also spot-on."
"The most valuable feature is the NAT-ing, the IP addresses... We can direct the traffic where it needs to go. We can control the traffic."
"It's very easy to use, especially compared to similar products. A lot more users use the WatchGuard appliance now than use the SonicWall appliance because of the ease of usability."
"The main reason we went with it was the security protocols. They were more robust on this device."
"Among the most valuable features is the ease of use — love the interface — of both the web interface and of the WatchGuard System Manager."
"The solution simplifies my business. Normally, for administration, we are using NetApp System Manager on Window since it's easy to create new policies. In a short amount of time, you can create new policies based on new requirements. For example, in the last few months, many requirements changed due to the coronavirus, adding the use of new services, like Office 365, and eLearning tools, like Zoom."
"The main features of the solution are the control of the site-to-site network access and the overall features."
"WatchGuard has a very easy VPN and branch office VPN setup, so we use those pretty extensively."
"My team tells me that other solutions such as Fortinet and Palo Alto are easier to implement."
"Web filtering needs improvement because sometimes the URL is miscategorized."
"Implementations require the use of a console. It would help if the console was embedded."
"The central management tool is not comfortable to use. You need to have a specific skill set. This is an important improvement for management because I would like to log into Firepower, see the dashboard, and generate a real-time report, then I question my team."
"The solution could offer better control that would allow the ability to restrictions certain features from a website."
"One feature I would like to see, that Firepower doesn't have, is email security. Perhaps in the future, Cisco will integrate Cisco Umbrella with Firepower. I don't see why we should have to pay for two separate products when both could be integrated in one box."
"It would be great if some of the load times were faster."
"The price and SD-WAN capabilities are the areas that need improvement."
"We have experienced some issues with SonicWall TZ and they are lacking some advanced features other vendors have."
"We have been facing issues with reporting."
"There is a point I don't like about SonicWall in the past and now. Most of the destinations we look at when we're detecting some user using too much bandwidth or something like that, SonicWall just gave us destination IP address, instead of the full qualified domain name. I think that's the most important part that is still missing. I think that's the most important for us."
"The areas we would like to see improvement include more features available similar to the equivalent FortiGate appliance, e.g. SSL encryption and inspection. Two-factor authentication capability would be another additional feature that could be included in the next release."
"GUI interface could be improved."
"FortiGate has a client DNS in the firewall, but SonicWall doesn't have that. To create or configure a site-to-site VPN tunnel, we have to give a DNS name. Currently, we have to get the DNS name from a third party and then include it in SonicWall, whereas FortiGate has its own client DNS, so it provides a DNS name, and it does not require a third party. There should be a graphical option to view the network utilization and bandwidth usage."
"In an upcoming release, SonicWall could improve by adding cloud management for all devices for free or at a nominal cost. Currently, they have a cloud management platform but is not free. We have the MySonicWall portal for purchasing from them for software updates and renewals."
"The VPN that is available in the new version is a bit bulky and slower in speed."
"I would like to see the devices made more flexible by adding modules to increase the ports that we can use."
"I'm not really impressed with the reporting side of it. It may be something I just haven't figured out very well, but it's hard to filter down on reporting of the actual valuable information that you would want. There is a lot of information out there so you have to have some kind of tool capture it and then filter through. So far, I haven't found the reporting side of the WatchGuard to be that user-friendly."
"If they could make the traffic monitoring easier that would be great. I don't use it that frequently, but I would like to see some improvements in the ease of use of that component, so it makes more sense. I know it's a technical component so there's going to be some difficulty trying to make that easier."
"The reporting is a little on the weak side. I would like to see a better reporting set and easier drill-down options."
"There is a slight learning curve."
"The pricing could be improved. It is definitely one of the more expensive products."
"Once you start getting into proxy actions and setting up: "Okay, cool. Once this rule gets triggered, what actions have to happen?" I do know a few people who use WatchGuard and they still have to get assistance when they look at that. So I would file that as a con for WatchGuard. Proxy actions can be a little bit complicated."
"I don't think I can get a full-blown DNS client from it. I've been trying to have DNS services. It has forwarding, but I don't get the services of a full DNS client. My main difficulty with it is that I can't run a complete service. I need NTP. I need DNS. I need DHCP for my domain, but I only get forwarding. As far as I can tell, I don't get caching and the kinds of reporting and registration needed to host a DNS for a domain. I have to have a separate solution for that."
"Its pricing is good and competitive. There is a maintenance cost. It includes SecureX that makes it cost-effective as compared to the other solutions where you have to pay for XDR and SOAR capabilities."
"This solution is expensive and other solutions, such as FortiGate, are cheaper."
"I am happy with the product in general, including the pricing."
"There are additional implementation and validation costs."
"The solution was chosen because of its price compared to other similar solutions."
"Cisco is not for a small mom-and-pop shop because of the cost, but if you're in a regulated industry where a breach could cost you a million dollars, it's a bargain."
"The price for Firepower is more expensive than FortiGate. The licensing is very complex. We usually ask for help from Solutel because of its complexity. I have a Cisco account where I can download the VPN client, then connect. Instead, I create an issue with Solutel, then Solutel solves the case."
"The price of Firepower is not bad compared to other products."
"The price could be better for us in Bolivia."
"It has a yearly subscription."
"The price is fair."
"The license that we purchased is good for three years."
"It is a bit expensive. We have to purchase the license and the reporting part separately, which makes it a bit pricey. This is the main reason why we have thought of moving to another firewall. It would be good if they combine both of these."
"Customers are required to pay for a yearly subscription."
"Its price is very high, which makes it difficult to convince the clients to buy this solution."
"You need to purchase multiple licenses to manage multiple devices which is cost-prohibitive for the value you would receive."
"I spent $600 or $800 on this product and I'm paying a couple of hundred dollars a year in a subscription service to keep the lights on, on it... It works out to $100 or $200 a year if you buy several years at once. It's fair."
"It has a very good price. It is not the most expensive one, and it is also not the cheapest one. It is just spot-on in terms of price."
"The cost was somewhere in the vicinity of $2,000 to $3,000 for each one..."
"WatchGuard had a very competitive price. It was only 10 to 20 percent more than a single instance device but with that extra cost it provided a second load balancing device... unlike other brands whose method of hardware and software licensing would have doubled our cost."
"We don't have any other costs other than the licensing stuff."
"The pricing was in line with everyone else; maybe slightly higher."
"It's fair pricing, but it could always be reduced."
"I usually tell people that it's really affordable as well, particularly compared to Cisco."
