It can be adapted to any process flow
Pros and Cons
  • "The combination of a highly flexible state machine together with a platform independent API enables possibilities to automate many steps that in many systems are manual."
  • "It can be adapted to any process flow and easily be integrated with other in-house tools using the ClearQuest API."
  • "Lack of a modern web interface compared to other systems might discourage customers."

What is our primary use case?

ClearQuest is a Defect Tracking system with a highly adaptable state machine together with an easy to use API, which can do all of the functions available in the GUI. This simplifies integration and automation of many steps is why the organization still uses a much older version, as there are no good replacements.

How has it helped my organization?

ClearQuest can be adapted to any process flow and easily be integrated with other in-house tools using the ClearQuest API. In combination with a good Configuration Management plan, an organization can create an optimal level of administration and automation creating good traceability in your tasks.

What is most valuable?

The combination of a highly flexible state machine together with a platform independent API enables possibilities to automate many steps that in many systems are manual.

What needs improvement?

Lack of a modern web interface compared to other systems might discourage customers. However, using the ClearQuest API enables you to do in-house GUI implementations, if desired.

For how long have I used the solution?

More than five years.

Tracks change requests, problems, and physical asset management. I would like to see data type for floating point numbers.

What is most valuable?

The workflow feature with stateful record types and the ability to implement these rapidly in our project have been of value to us.

We’ve used the product to track change requests, problems, and physical asset management for a major railroad infrastructure project.

How has it helped my organization?

The solution we’re providing our client required the implementation of the workflow feature to complement their process. It allows us to assign responsibility to each step of the process in the change requests.

As for the assets, it allows us to establish the lifecycle of the assets.

What needs improvement?

The product has its quirks and limitations. For instance, there is no data type for floating point numbers. Only integer types are provided.

ClearQuest provides no support for Boolean (True/False) or Double (3.14) data types.

For how long have I used the solution?

I’ve been using this solution since early 2013.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have not had any issues with stability so far.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I haven’t gone through any scalability activities at the moment. Although, I don't think our WAN was adequate to achieve the performance we needed with ClearQuest.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Customer service has been adequate. Most of the times we've had any issues IBM has been able to provide a solution. We've dealt mostly with customer service representatives in Brazil.

Technical Support:

Technical support from IBM is pretty good since you can create a PMR with them and they’re very responsible.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We didn’t have any previous solutions. This solution was required by our client. We developed it for them based on their requirements. The client felt the tool had a good reputation for implementing configuration management and requested it.

How was the initial setup?

As far as the infrastructure setup, we’re using a somewhat straightforward setup. However, our use of the tool was somewhat complex, considering we haven’t seen the implementation we’ve setup anywhere else.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It’s very expensive, especially considering that there are much more economical options out there.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I was not given the option for alternative solutions. This solution was required by our client. I wouldn’t recommend it for the purpose for which they are using it.

What other advice do I have?

I would not recommend this solution to others. It is not worth the cost.

You can do customizations for a project or ticket management system. I would like to see more dynamic and lightweight web forms.

What is most valuable?

  • Customization level of the tool to meet client’s requirements.
  • You can do almost all of the customizations for a project or ticket management system.
  • Notification, hooks, and UI customization are very stable.

How has it helped my organization?

We were the team who developed, customized, and catered to a large proportion of the audience who used the tool in my company. We were from the enablement side of the team.

Before me, the project was working with the tool for five or six years. It has grown significantly for clients' engagements. It helped them in their respective projects.

Our client base used the tool for managing risks, issues, scope, and change.

It has also been integrated with ITSM/MSP/ClearCase source control tools.

What needs improvement?

I am not aware of current versions and development of the tool. However, the user interface seems very static and the user experience was not the best. It was good, but not up to the mark. It needs more dynamic and lightweight web forms.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used it for over three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

There were no stability issues. It is a very stable and mature tool.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

There were no scalability issues, as it is a database dependent tool. All you need is a scalable database and a good hardware platform. The tool itself is not limited by serving a heavy workload.

How is customer service and technical support?

I would give technical support a rating of 8/10. It's IBM, so not many issues were encountered.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was mixed. All you need is to have is a running database and the installation manager will do the rest. Sometimes upgrading schema management can be complex.

What other advice do I have?

It is a good workflow solution. It is more suitable for engagements with large heterogeneous teams and tools such as incident management and ITSM/MSPS integrated systems.
