Machine learning that can be applicable for other data sets without having to carry out the process all over again

Pros and Cons

  • "The system's ability to take a look at data, segment it and then use that data very differently."
  • "It's sometimes easy to get lost given the number of images the solution opens up when you click on the mouse and the amount of different tabs."

What is our primary use case?

I'm looking at data analytics for division making. In the working environment, I'm looking at how we can use the system to give insights based on company data relating to employees.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is the system's ability to take a look at data, segment it and then use that data very differently. What I'm referring to is machine learning which can be applicable for other data sets without having to carry out the process all over again. It's a very powerful feature. In addition, the ability of the product to firstly have the solution as a cloud solution and second, the ease of use of the application. The importation of data and then shipping it for analysis is a very easy and small process.

What needs improvement?

I'm not yet familiar enough with the product to talk about improvements but one aspect that comes to mind from what I've seen is that sometimes it's easy to get lost given the number of images the solution opens up when you click on the mouse and the amount of different tabs. It might be easy for someone to lose their way around the system. But no real complaints, so far so good.

Previously we had what you call a multiple document interface so that whatever you do, you're still within the same container. You could look at the same kind of environment where you don't have to jump between different windows. You can split a window if you need to get to some other bit of information in the system. You leave your window, and then reference that information on the same window as opposed to jumping to another window. Otherwise, you end up with too many windows and they get cluttered. It becomes hard to navigate around.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for the last two months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

For the couple of months I've been using the system it's been stable. I have the metrics and I have the performance parameters to show this, and I have not had any issues warranting assistance.

How are customer service and technical support?

I haven't had any experience with technical support.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very straightforward. I'm impressed. I think as soon as you get logged into the system, everything works, this is especially true with a cloud-based system. But we haven't gone commercial yet, so I'm still using the environment that has been set up by IBM itself. There may be some issues that I haven't experienced yet.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

For now, we're using the light edition which is free but I'm sure once we decide to go commercial with it, we will pay some license for it.

What other advice do I have?

The general advice I would give is that people should think twice about the kind of results that they are seeking. This is general for any system, not only IBM products, but they should be aware of the resources that they're sitting on that is data.

Based on the brief experience I've had with the system, it works for me. It has given me the kind of results that I was looking for. It is stable. I want to believe that the support is equally good even though I've not had any experience as far as that is concerned, but I want to believe that based on the other parameters, the support will follow suit.

I would rate this product a nine out of 10.

Integrates consistently across your digital channel when trying to build an end-to-end digital platform

Pros and Cons

  • "IBM Watson Studio consistently automates across channels."
  • "Some of the solutions are really good solutions but they can be a little too costly for many."

What is our primary use case?

We are doing the cloud part of the IBM Watson Studio. The customer needed a marketing analytics solution. IBM Watson Studio is a very comprehensive suite of marketing solutions including AI and predictive analytics.

How has it helped my organization?

IBM Watson Studio consistently automates across channels. When you're trying to build an end-to-end digital platform, it integrates consistently across your digital channel whether you're going through emails or shopping charts. That all is integrated into your call center. You use it mostly when you want to break into your communication channels your customer interactions. That's when it's actually really good. You don't have to bring many pools together to get your solution. You can have your emails, your leave management, hotspot, or your social media. You can have analytics built into that little eco-system that IBM Watson Studio creates.

What is most valuable?

The customer was looking at doing some predictive analytics, so that was the part that we focused on. They were also looking at how they could automate simple things within the analytics themselves. For example, if you can teach the machine the algorithms to do certain things, then it can automatically do those things and extract data from that. The customer also had other IBM solutions so that played a part in why they went for IBM Watson Studio. Integration with other tools, especially for IBM products, is not a problem because IBM has an open-source platform where you can build things from. So that makes it a very good solution to have if you can afford it.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

For our deployment, it scaled well. IBM Watson Studio is not just one solution. It is several solutions put together. That what makes it a very strong solution. It's like having Salesforce and Google Analytics in one single solution.

How are customer service and technical support?

We didn't use the technical support from IBM. We only used the available online documentation. But it was sufficient for our purposes.

How was the initial setup?

Since we only worked with IBM Watson Studio once it was difficult because we were new to it.

What about the implementation team?

We are system integrators. We do not consume our deployment of IT. We deploy it for others. We have deep pockets of experience to be able to work with this kind of solution. The documentation was good. It really helped us.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It will come down again to cost. Some of the solutions are really good solutions but they can be a little too costly for many. I think a lot of software vendors have considered having special pricing for African countries. After the deployment in Johannesburg, I tried to pitch it to a local Telco because I felt they needed it. They couldn't do it based on the pricing. They felt the price is just too high.

What other advice do I have?

The advice that I would give is to have your general design structured properly. That's how you can get the best out of it. Because the objectives would be really clear to everyone. You can know which ones to bring onboard. Then if you are deploying it a system integrator, you have to understand the customer's journey as a whole. This means that you have to have insights on the different channels that customer is using.

I rate the IBM Watson Studio at a nine out of ten.

Employs AI for professional analysis of video and other content

Pros and Cons

  • "The most important thing is that it's a multi-faceted solution. It's a kind of specialist, not a generalist. It can produce very specific information for the customer. It's totally different from Google or any search engine that produces generic information. It's specialty is that it's all on video."
  • "So a better user interface could be very helpful"

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use for Watson Studio was to analyze the trans-video prints about the operation so they can get their own insight into how the public thinks about their corporation. Also, I analyzed resumes so the AI can generate the proper information for the resume.

What is most valuable?

The most important thing is that it's a multi-faceted solution. It's a kind of specialist, not a generalist. It can produce very specific information for the customer. It's totally different from Google or any search engine that produces generic information. It's specialty is that it's all on video.

It's professional.

AI is an important part of Watson Studio.

What needs improvement?

The product is already really great but for most researchers or a person like me, there are few templates to try something new. So we're limited.

Also, I think to make the most of Watson Studio the user interface needs to be improved. For the developer or the engineer, it could be very easy to use but to a person or a text analyzer, they could have some problems using it. So a better user interface could be very helpful

For how long have I used the solution?

I used it briefly.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

In terms of the stability, it's technology is like a black box. We never know how it works, how the AI engine works. We find out how but to do the work we need to try lots of experiences.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability was great. It worked. It works fine as long as you can train it in the right direction.

How are customer service and technical support?

I would rate IBM's technical support as average.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward. The deployment took maybe three months to six months because we tested it and tested it, over and over again.

What about the implementation team?

We have our own team that implemented it.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate it around eight or nine out of ten because sometimes I experience some unknown error.

Great features and is easy to use

Pros and Cons

  • "The scalability of IBM Watson Studio is great."
  • "The decision making in their decision making feature is less good than other options."

What is our primary use case?

We use Watson Studio with an application we developed for restaurants on the Facebook Messenger platform using Chatbot. It contains many features like making orders and table reservations.

What is most valuable?

Every feature is good in Watson Studio.

What needs improvement?

Improving it just like the features in Google Dialogflow and Small Talk. If these features were also in IBM Watson Studio that would work for us.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using IBM Watson Studio around one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

In terms of stability - it's stable. As compared to Google Dialogflow it's very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of IBM Watson Studio is great.

Currently, we have around 100+ clients. There around 1000 users using our platform and starting in the new year we have plans to increase our clients.

We now have a six to seven member team maintaining the program.

How are customer service and technical support?

In our experience, compared to Dialogflow, they have great support. IBM has great support, so we are certified with IBM also.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used Google Dialogflow but the setup and running were very complicated. So that's why we moved on to IBM Watson Studio.

How was the initial setup?

The initial set up was very easy, especially as compared to Google Dialogflow.

The deployment does not take much time, around one and a half days. The training takes more time because I have lots of use-cases. It will also take time to train our bot.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I evaluated Google Dialogflow and Amazon. In the end we chose IBM Watson Studio because the training and features in Dialogflow are very complicated.

What other advice do I have?

IBM Watson Studio has great features but the decision making in their decision making feature is less good than other options. If IBM Watson would improve their decision based system, then definitely IBM Watson could perform the role of an AI engine.

Good technical support and the page search functionality provides valuable insight into competition

Pros and Cons

  • "It has a lot of data connectors, which is extremely helpful."
  • "The initial setup was complex."

What is our primary use case?

My primary use is to create a forecasting model for sales. I am doing automation from a supply chain point of view.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is the page search, where I can have it visit my competitor's website and search through all of their promotions and offerings.

The SPSS Modeler components are all built-in, which is useful.

The notebooks are really helpful for data science.

It has a lot of data connectors, which is extremely helpful.

What needs improvement?

The initial setup was complex.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Watson Studio for about six months. It is currently still in the PoC phase.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have only implemented the PoC and not on a full-scale production basis, so we have not yet encountered issues with scalability.

How are customer service and technical support?

We have been in contact with technical support a few times and they are really good. They are very prompt, unlike the case a year or two ago when they were not very responsive. The fact that the support is fast is something that I really like.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did not use another data science platform before this one.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very complex, although it was not due to the product but rather, the complexity of the business.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We are currently evaluating two other products. One of them is from Oracle and the other is from JDA.

What other advice do I have?

My advice to anybody who is considering this solution is that it is really good for an enterprise-level organization. It is not really suitable for a small or medium-sized business.

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
