Flexible and easy to configure but not very stable

Pros and Cons

  • "The installation is nice and easy."
  • "The pricing needs to be more competitive."

What is our primary use case?

The solution is like a storage device that is for our old organized cloud infrastructure. We are using it as storage for all our databases, for the data we are preparing for in developing our own applications, or for running some infrastructure services.

What is most valuable?

The solution is very flexible.

It's a very fast product. It's not slow in any way.

The product is very, very easy to configure.

The installation is nice and easy.

What needs improvement?

The stability of the solution isn't great. We have had a lot of issues with discs over the years.

There should be better integration with utilization platforms.

The pricing needs to be more competitive.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've basically been using the solution for ten years or so.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It isn't really stable per se. We've had some problems over the years. We experienced some problems with the backplane, from what I recall. There were issues switching the discs. We had a lot of issues with discs. Of course, the problems didn't really happen in production.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have about 100 users on the solution currently.

How are customer service and technical support?

We've dealt with technical support in the past and we were satisfied with their level of service. However, we no longer pay for support. We have enough knowledgeable people in house to handle everything.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We are actually in the process of changing solutions. We're going to switch to Lenovo's DE4000.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was not complex at all. It's pretty straightforward and easy to handle.

The deployment was very fast as well and may have only taken about a day or two.

We had a team of three that handled everything. They don't just handle the storage, however. They're handling the servers and network as well.

What about the implementation team?

We didn't need to use a consultant when we were implementing the solution. We did everything in-house and with our own internal teams.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We initially paid for licenses and support for I don't remember how many years. Later on, if you want to extend the support you needed to pay for the license. However, due to the fact that we are rather experienced, we decided we didn't need to renew the support.

What other advice do I have?

Currently, on the market, I see a lot of different vendors who are offering the same functionalities or even better options for the same or less money. They should try to be more competitive.

Overall, I would rate the solution at a six out of ten. If it was less expensive and a bit more stable, I would likely rate it higher.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Easy to implement, runs well, and the price is good

Pros and Cons

  • "The setup and the price are the most valuable and not the features related."
  • "I would like to see the next generation all-flash, which could be combined."

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution for the software. The hardware, we design ourselves.

We are resellers. We provide business software and the back-end system is a cross-selling theme for us.

What is most valuable?

The setup and the price are the most valuable and not the features related.

On top of the data core environment for software-defined storage, we use machine power and not software technology.

We struggle with finding anything to improve, as it's a powerful solution and is missing nothing.

What needs improvement?

The energy could be better. I would like to see the next generation all-flash, which could be combined.

The interface needs improvement. You have a standardized fiber channel from the past and you have to order a 10 gig interface separately. It would be better to have it all. Huawei has it all in its portfolio, so it can easily be built. They don't have to purchase it, it can be built by themselves.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Huawei OceanStor for five years.

How are customer service and technical support?

We have not contacted technical support because it runs very well. We have not had any issues.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We are also working with Lenovo. Lenovo is in the same price range, but Huawei is a step further.

How was the initial setup?

The implementation is easy because we are educated and experienced in Huawei OceanStor.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Huawei OceanStor is priced very well but is a bit complicated.

You have a price list but have to wait for a discount, which depends on the distribution, where you get it from. This is intransparent, I prefer a clear price policy.

I would prefer having a price quote based on whether you are a reseller if you have silver or gold status, or a customer.

The price list is high and you get a large discount from the price list. I prefer a comparable price list and a smaller discount.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We are always looking for the best solution for the next five years.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Huawei OceanStor an eight out of ten.

Plenty of features, priced well, and reliable

Pros and Cons

  • "There are plenty of features available in this solution."
  • "This solution can improve by providing easier migrations and better Metro features."

What is our primary use case?

Huawei OceanStor Dorado is a flash storage solution.

What is most valuable?

There are plenty of features available in this solution.

What needs improvement?

This solution can improve by providing easier migrations and better Metro features.

In an upcoming release, Huawei could improve by adding migration services to allow customers to migrate from other solutions, such as HPE or Dell. This would help make this solution more attractive to those wanting to switch.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for approximately one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is highly stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I have clients of all business sizes.

How are customer service and technical support?

The support is good. However, there are times when it can be challenging.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have previously used IBM, HPE, Dell, and Lenovo and when comparing Huawei OceanStor Dorado, it is a very good solution.

How was the initial setup?

The difficulty level of the installation depends on the client's environment. There are easy installations and very complicated ones. For example, if the client needs to have replication and backups a few times a day and there is more than a 200-kilometer distance for the data to be transferred it can be difficult.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We usually recommend our customers choose advanced licensing and enterprise companies are more inclined to choose this solution because it is more cost-effective than competitors.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Huawei OceanStor Dorado a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Hybrid Cloud
