Easy to configure, reliable, secure, and has good support
Pros and Cons
  • "This is a basic solution; the policy screen is okay, and it's easy to configure."
  • "I would like to see better reporting and alerting features in the future."

What is our primary use case?

We are using this solution to secure ATM.

How has it helped my organization?

It does its job well, and it's not causing a lot of trouble. We have enough knowledge to resolve the issues. We have not had many issues at all, but we do have the knowledge to deal with this critical product.

What is most valuable?

This is a basic solution; the policy screen is okay, and it's easy to configure.

What needs improvement?

With some specific versions, we are experiencing some issues where the policy configuration has some problems with the parent and child processes. There have been problems with the relationship between the parent and child process, from time to time.

I would like to see better reporting and alerting features in the future.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using McAfee Application Control for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I can say that it is quite stable. We have not experienced many issues with that. There are not many features or things that can cause some issues.

This has not been a frequent occurrence, maybe twice a year. We are careful with the upgrades.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's a scalable and flexible product. We have seven admins who are using it.

They need to evolve in what they are doing. I don't think at this time we will increase our usage.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is not too bad. They are quite mature and have experience with the product. We have not experienced any issues with support.

Approximately three months ago, we contacted technical support regarding a memory problem we were having. It was a problem with one of the latest versions that was causing memory leaks and some of our ATMs crashed due to this issue.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward for me because I have years of experience.

It might be challenging for new beginners.

The time for deployment depends on the environment. If for example, we have an environment with 3000 ATMs, it will take some time but it depends on the testing procedure. It might take a month to deploy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I am not dealing with this area. I am not sure about the pricing.

What other advice do I have?

For anyone who is interested in this solution, you need to follow a procedure before it's deployed. It needs to be well tested at first and started with the most predictable environment, and then increase the number of deployments.

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Has signatures for different kinds of protocols but the licensing model is confusing
Pros and Cons
  • "We also like the Change Control. We can control how things get executed. It has signatures for different kinds of protocols."
  • "The intrusion detection features should also be improved. It is a very good feature but it should be maximized."

What is our primary use case?

We implement this solution and we also use it. We get product exposure because we are the activation service.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is the whitelisting. I can test the applications and we can also predefine rules for Windows, rules for the application and control. We need to define the application that we need to use ie; the folders, the application resolution we need to allow.

We also like the Change Control. We can control how things get executed. It has signatures for different kinds of protocols.

What needs improvement?

It should have more monitoring on the modes. You can observe what other applications are running and you can create the policies for the application controls. You should have the option of creating the policy so that it will be easier for user to configure.

The intrusion detection features should also be improved. It is a very good feature but it should be maximized. It should be for intrusion prevention also. When you want to prevent an intrusion, then that application should be quarantined. But in the field I'm working in, I can't do that because it can quarantine my system as well. It should be able to detect any anomaly and malicious communication that is happening between two PCs.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using McAfee for six months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I haven't had any issues with stability or scalability.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not straightforward, it was complex.

The manuals don't have all the information you need to deploy it. That makes it complex. If it would convey the processes in a better, standard way, it would simplify the process.

What about the implementation team?

We integrated the solution ourselves.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend McAfee. I have used other solutions like Symantec Endpoint and this solution is better.

I would rate it a seven out of ten.

We have had issues with licensing. It's confusing. You don't get to choose the parts that you want. It is sold as endpoint control but also with other functions. If you want SQL, it's not available. There are elements that aren't available. They should have a single entity. The licensing model confuses the customers.
