Effective on-premises and cloud, beneficial sandboxing, and advanced AI detection
    Pros and Cons
    • "When you say email security, it's about everything, incoming email, outgoing email, spam, phishing emails, unwanted marketing emails. You can set rules, but the main feature of Sophos Email is to make sure you don't get hacked. 95% of people who are hacked do not get hacked by typing the router password. They are hacked from the inside out, which means they send you a document that is a zero-day attack, you open it, nothing happens, but technically the attack is running in the background of your computer. This is how they gain access to your PC."

What is our primary use case?

We can use Sophos Email for securing incoming and outgoing emails. Whether your email server is on-premise or on the cloud, you can use Sophos email security to protect your mailboxes from spam, phishing, zero-day attack, such as if somebody sends an email with an attachment that anti-virus cannot detect. For example, today, I can send you a PDF that has inside a virus, and you cannot detect it through the anti-virus. What Sophos Email security does is filters and classifies those emails by using AI in a sandbox. The email comes to Sophos Email security platform first, it opens the email, runs the attachment, and sees the behavior. If normal, the email is passed. If the email has a zero-day attack, and it senses that the PDF is doing something to Windows or Linux, it quarantines and notifies the administrator.

It's the optimal solution for people who needs to secure their email, whether they have on-premise or on the cloud email server, SophosEmail security can be used.

This solution has artificial intelligence. It means it doesn't depend only on the normal definition. It reads the algorithm and analyzes it, so it's something very advanced than other vendors.

Sophos Email is accurate and fast. It does block stealth attacks ransomware if you receive a file, which is hidden. For us, we can see it's a very good solution compared with others.

Overall the solution is easy for management and easy to use in general. It has all the tools, such as active protection for your organization's needs.

The main requirement of this solution is for email security and protection. The settings are easy, very secure, and simple GUI to manage.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Sophos Email for approximately five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

      The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is highly scalable. You can subscribe for 100, 500, 1000, as many as you want. We haven't tried more than 300 users, but it does support as much as you want. When you have thousands of users something else you would need to speak to the service about.

We have approximately 10 organizations using this solution as our customers.

How are customer service and support?

I have not faced many problems. However, if there is a glitch, for example, from the portal, you can usually receive a reply from the Sophos team within four hours.

      How was the initial setup?

There is no installation since it is cloud-based. However, you have to open an account, activate it, forward the emails to it, and make sure the emails are coming. The emails then come back to you analyzed. The process is straightforward.

      What about the implementation team?

You need skills to operate this solution, if you are not an IT-oriented person, you cannot. You have to be trained on it, but it's easy if you are already a skilled person. For example, it's the concept, when you have a driving license, you have to buckle the seatbelt, check the mirrors, etc. If you are a skilled person, and you have dealt with other products, it's straightforward. There are no deep skills required.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Sophos Email is a subscription-based pricing model. Any vendor that gives you a service on the cloud is subscription-based, not perpetual, you have to pay annually to continue with the subscription.

The first step is to do sizing. For example, if you have 10 users and because of the second month, you might have two new employees. You always plan forward for how many licenses you want to buy.

The second point is don't look at the price. You have to understand that this is a very rich, secure protection solution. Don't look at the price, and if it's a bit more expensive than others, don't look at it. For example, if this solution is $12, and that other one is $10. You will find a lot of value in this solution and the small difference in price should not matter, it does protect well. Recently, you can have a monthly subscription, but it's more affordable if you have an annual subscription. It's not cheap or expensive, it is a good price for what you're buying.

The pricing could improve by having additional discounts. For example, when customers buy have more than 50 or more users, there should be additional discounts.

What other advice do I have?

I highly recommend Sophos Email. People who are having their email accounts with Office 365 might not be motivated to buy Sophos because Office 365, is already a cloud subscription that includes mailboxes and protection. They might be very happy with that, or might not be. However, the people who are not hosting their email on the cloud should use Sophos Email.

I rate Sophos Email a ten out of ten.

Good pricing, offers an easy setup, and quite stable
      Pros and Cons
      • "The deployment is very easy. It's quite straightforward."
      • "The solution's technical support is slow and unresponsive. You need to book time in order to get support."

      What is most valuable?

The solution is very good at covering all of my organization's needs.

I've found the security to be quite good on the product.

The deployment is very easy. It's quite straightforward.

The pricing is great. It's quite fair and not too expensive.

Overall, the product has some great features.

      What needs improvement?

The solution seems to be very good at iterating on past editions and continues to improve itself. I don't know if it's truly lacking everything.

It would be great if it was a bit better at protecting from the endpoints.

The solution's technical support is slow and unresponsive. You need to book time in order to get support.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for about four years now.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is quite stable. We've found it to be very reliable for our organization. There aren't issues with bugs or glitches. I've never experienced it crashing or freezing. It's been good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable. Your organization can easily expand it if you need it to.

Currently, we have around 100 users on the solution. That would be the maximum number of users.

How are customer service and technical support?

While Fortinet has great technical support and is quite responsive and fast, I've found that Sophos requires its users to book time for support.

Symantec was also quite helpful - more so than Sophos, which still seems to be iroing out details in terms of handling customer queries. They need to be much more responsive.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

In the past, I've used Symantec products including Symantec Gateway and Symantec Endpoint Protection. When Symantec bought Barracuda, the pricing became much different. The solution seemed to offer the same features but with much higher pricing. Our company decided to go in a different direction and chose Sophos.

I still like Symantec. I used it for five years and I'm quite familiar with the product.

      How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is quite straightforward. It's not complex.

The deployment is easy to handle. How long it takes depends on which product you want to use. It's different according to your endpoint, email service, mobile, etc. That said, it's still an easy deployment process.

Our users are able to easily maintain it themselves.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing, in general, if very fair. It's definitely a positive aspect of the solution.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I've looked into Fortinet's server and some related products, however, I likely won't continue looking into them. I'd rather consider Symantec.

What other advice do I have?

We're just customers. We don't have any business relationship with the company.

I'm still working with this solution and testing its capabilities. There's still so much to learn about its offerings.

On a scale from one to ten, I would rate it at an eight. If they had better deployments for email security, I might rate them higher.

Good protection features and easily scalable; lacks visibility into spam emails
      Pros and Cons
      • "Good VIP protection, time of click protection and the Sandstorm feature."
      • "Lacks visibility into spam emails."

What is our primary use case?

Most of the time, Sophos is used as a mail room. It sits in front of an email server, either on cloud or on-premise. I'm a technical engineer and we are distributors of Sophos.

      What is most valuable?

There are quite a number of features in this solution. There's VIP protection, there's also time of click protection and the Sandstorm feature. I think these features are all very good. There's also the smart banners, that help us know whether the email has malicious content. Management of the solution is simple because it can be managed at one point. We can also integrate with all other Sophos solutions which gives us visibility in their network.

      What needs improvement?

They're making improvements all the time but I'd like to see visibility into the spam emails so you can easily see them directly on the dashboard.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This is a very stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This is a very scalable solution. Depending on the number and size of the environments, you can easily cover every size, almost every small SMB within the market.

How are customer service and technical support?

Sophos lacks real-time support, which would be a help to us. Getting them active and the ability to get a technical person on a chat room immediately, you need that support.

      How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very straightforward, it is one of the simplest setups you can get. Implementation takes a few minutes, especially on public cloud. It may take extra time if you are using another domain host that Sophos doesn't control.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I think the licensing is reasonable compared to its competitors.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommending deciding on the specific features you need rather than just going for the standard product because you will be missing out on advanced features that take care of advanced threat protection. I recommend the advanced version which protects against threats from hackers and especially when it comes to phishing.

I would rate this solution a seven out of 10.

Spot-on anti-malware and risk scanning features
      Pros and Cons
      • "The anti-malware, risk scanning has been pretty spot on."
      • "Their technical support is slow to respond."

What is our primary use case?

I have a couple of clients who are using this solution. We use this solution to scan email for viruses.

      What is most valuable?

The anti-malware, risk scanning has been pretty spot on.

      What needs improvement?

They should allow copier release without having to create email accounts.

I've run into situations, especially when I'm using Office 365; if we're actually using copiers to send emails (of course you'd barely actually have to set up an email account, you just set it off to relay). If your exchange environment is only set to accept email from Sophos Email servers, those messages will never get delivered. Sophos flags them as spam and kills them even before they get there.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Sophos Email for two to three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

      Sophos Email is pretty stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is not relevant because they're on cloud-based servers.

How are customer service and technical support?

Their technical support is slow to respond.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Years ago, I used to use Symantec for email security. Sophos offers a giant suite through their central managed console, they became MSP friendly. That's why we made the switch. We had a central pane of glass that actually viewed every single Sophos product that we would deploy to our clients.

There is an additional fee for their central managed console.

I haven't looked at the costs of that because I'm in a tier program. The licenses I sell for any Sophos product go into a pool. As long as I'm using a thousand different Sophos products, or a combination of those products, my tier drops.

      How was the initial setup?

      The initial setup was straightforward.

What other advice do I have?

If you're thinking about implementing this solution, keep in mind that the tech support Is usually very slow.

On a scale from one to ten, I would give Sophos Email a nine.

Stable, scalable, but the security could improve

What is our primary use case?

We primarily deploy Sophos Email to customers for email phishing prevention. Every email which comes to the endpoint and to the users would have to pass through this support email-based in the cloud.
