Allows recovery almost immediately while enabling you to continue fixing the problem of the affected machine
Pros and Cons
  • "In Veeam backup, the most valuable feature for me is the recovery. It allows me to recover almost immediately while I continue fixing the problem of the affected machine."
  • "I would like to see the licensing model improved. They have recently changed the model and have made it more complicated."

What is our primary use case?

We use it for replication purposes. It makes recovery simple and we can also have a dummy recovery in order to show auditors and our superiors that our backup software really works.

What is most valuable?

In Veeam backup, the most valuable feature for me is the recovery. It allows me to recover almost immediately while I continue fixing the problem of the affected machine.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see the licensing model improved. They have recently changed the model and have made it more complicated.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Veeam since 2016. I'm currently on Veeam ONE version 11. The solution is deployed on-prem.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The product doesn't require any specific maintenance. In our company, there are currently 10 people working with Veeam backup.

The solution is stable. The performance is all right. When you are using VMware hypervisor, it sometimes has minor issues, but they are not something to tell home about.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is extremely scalable.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support really went out of the way to assist me. They even came to our offices to help us out with the issue we were experiencing at the time.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously used the Symantec product, but it wasn't up to standard. We switched to Veeam because of its ease of use.

How was the initial setup?

It's simple. It's a straightforward process.

What about the implementation team?

Installation was done internally by our team. Deployment took about three hours

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution is expensive, but it's value for money.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate this solution 8 out of 10.

My advice is to watch the admin videos available on the Veeam website.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

An easy-to-manage, stable, and scalable solution for disaster recovery and instant VM recovery
Pros and Cons
  • "The instant VM recovery feature is the most valuable. It is a very good tool for disaster recovery. It is also easy to manage."
  • "Its licensing needs to be improved. Its licensing has become complex since last December. They have changed the way the product is licensed, and there is a lot of confusion. Sometimes, when a new version comes, it seems that it has not been tested enough because I usually find some bugs in it. It could also have more integration with other virtualization products, such as desktop virtualization products and open-source virtualization products."

What is our primary use case?

We mainly use it for backup. We are using its latest version.

How has it helped my organization?

It protects us from losing data and having downtime.

What is most valuable?

The instant VM recovery feature is the most valuable. It is a very good tool for disaster recovery. It is also easy to manage.

What needs improvement?

Its licensing needs to be improved. Its licensing has become complex since last December. They have changed the way the product is licensed, and there is a lot of confusion.

Sometimes, when a new version comes, it seems that it has not been tested enough because I usually find some bugs in it.

It could also have more integration with other virtualization products, such as desktop virtualization products and open-source virtualization products.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this product for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is pretty stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Its scalability is great. It offers a lot of options from the scalability point of view.

We have many users of this solution. Most of the workers are using this solution for backup.
We use it daily, and we are planning to keep using this solution.

How are customer service and technical support?

Their technical support is really good. Their responses are quick enough, and they are knowledgeable about the solution.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We didn't use any other product.

How was the initial setup?

Its initial setup was pretty straightforward. It took me about four hours to implement everything and configure everything. You just need one administrator for its deployment and maintenance.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did not evaluate any other product.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this product. It is a very good product.

I would rate Veeam Backup & Replication an eight out of ten.

Responsive technical support, straightforward installation, and reliable
Pros and Cons
  • "My customers find the backup and recovery ease of use is the most beneficial feature."
  • "The recovery and integration features of Veeam Backup Replication could improve. For example, all VM integration could improve, such as with Hyper-V and VMware."

What is our primary use case?

Veeam Backup Replication is used by my clients as a backup and recovery solution.

What is most valuable?

My customers find the backup and recovery ease of use is the most beneficial feature.

What needs improvement?

The recovery and integration features of Veeam Backup Replication could improve. For example, all VM integration could improve, such as with Hyper-V and VMware.

There is not any kind of archiving feature that is provided and in a future release, there should be an archiving feature in this platform. They would be better able to compete with the other archiving solution. In the current scenario, if the customer wants to have an archiving feature, they will have to purchase another solution because we cannot have this archiving feature with Veeam Backup Replication.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veeam Backup Replication for approximately five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Veeam Backup Replication has been stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of Veeam Backup Replication is good.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support is good and responsive.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have used Commvault.

How was the initial setup?

The initial installation is quite easy and not very cumbersome. It's easy if you have a basic understanding of the architecture of the Veeam.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The subscription-based pricing of Veeam Backup Replication is competitive.

What other advice do I have?

The solution that we recommend more often depends on the use case. If there are other use cases that include bare metal recovery and archiving features then I would recommend another product, such as Commvault.

I would advise before implementing a solution such as Veeam Backup Replication that you have the training and skillset before implementation. This allows for proper implementation, best practices, and stability. It is helpful to have someone that is certified.

I rate Veeam Backup Replication an eight out of ten.

They started their cloud journey a lot sooner than other solutions
Pros and Cons
  • "I like how Veeam intuitively integrates with Zerto."
  • "Restoration takes about two to four hours with Veeam. Zerto can restore in about 10 seconds. That's the restoration speed I'm looking for now that we're dealing with ransomware."

What is most valuable?

I like how Veeam intuitively integrates with Zerto. They started on their cloud journey a lot sooner than other backup software, and Veeam has a lower footprint on your Commvault.

What needs improvement?

Restoration takes about two to four hours with Veeam. Zerto can restore in about 10 seconds. That's the restoration speed I'm looking for now that we're dealing with ransomware. This is one area where Zerto has an edge on Veeam.  However, both are easy to use.

The only thing I would like to see from Veeam is a calculator for estimating the costs on all the different cloud providers. I don't think any product has this. So if I go into Azure versus AWS, it would be nice to have some way to calculate what I will end up paying.

One thing I've noticed is that both cloud providers will say it's going to cost you X amount to do a backup, and it's simple to compare costs between them. But if you want to do a site recovery, it will cost more to start up all the servers you were backing up in that cloud. Even though one cloud provider might save you money on backup, your total costs will be higher when you factor in restoration. I want the transparency to say Azure is more cost-effective than AWS for backup, but Azure will cost you 2 percent more than the other one to provide that visibility to my client.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Veeam Backup for about 10 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

For traditional environments with physical servers, Veeam isn't as great as combos or traditional backup systems like TSM. However, if you are looking at virtualization or shifting to the cloud, Veeam is stable and quite progressive in those spaces.

How are customer service and support?

Veeam's support is international and quite responsive.

What other advice do I have?

I give Veeam Backup Replication eight out of 10.

Requires better integration with database components and cloud services; VM backups are good
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution does a good job with VM backups."
  • "The solution is rather weak when it comes to database integration."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case of this solution is for application servers, web servers on Linux, Windows, AIX, databases, Db2, Sybase, Oracle and the like.

What is most valuable?

I think this solution does VM back ups very well.

What needs improvement?

I find this product to be rather weak when it comes to database integration and that really is problematic. It needs to have better integration with the database components as well as the cloud-based services.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for about a year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

At the moment, this product is not very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I think it is horizontally scalable, but not vertically very scalable. It tends to run into issues with regards to performance if you require vertical scalability.

How are customer service and technical support?

In South Africa, the technical support is average. They should respond more quickly and be more customer friendly. The rep really needs to be more knowledgeable.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously used Veritas.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was quite complex and took us a few months to install. We used a partner and vendor for the installation because we had a lot of problems. As a result, we're not sure if we'll continue with the solution or choose an alternative.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We chose Veeam because the licensing was cheap and we got a special deal from them.

What other advice do I have?

I wouldn't really recommend this solution. In terms of the integration of this solution, we're finding it doesn't do everything it promises. There is a difference between what the sales people tell you and the reality. Because of the issues we've had, I rate this solution four out of 10.

Has simplified administration, simple installation, and a simple interface
Pros and Cons
  • "The initial setup for a simple environment is very easy. We just do next, next, next, next for the installation. It can be complicated in a complicated environment. It can be simple for a simple environment. I enjoy installing it. It has a lot of features."
  • "I have a problem with the VM. When we started doing a backup, it takes a snapshot for our virtual machines, but when we try it two or three times, in some cases, our virtual machines go to a consolidated state. I don't know why this problem happens. But I still think Veeam is a top-ranking solution."

What is our primary use case?

In most cases, we use Veeam Backup Replication for backup and recovery. In some literal cases, we use it for replication and statics.

What needs improvement?

I have a problem with the VM. When we started doing a backup, it takes a snapshot for our virtual machines, but when we try it two or three times, in some cases, our virtual machines go to a consolidated state. I don't know why this problem happens. But I still think Veeam is a top-ranking solution.

I don't know why this VM problem happens. Sometimes, I think it's because of our environments and performance. I have a little bit of a performance problem when VMs back up. I don't think it's optimized in our environment because of that.

It doesn't have any reporting in it. The reporting and GUI interface can be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veeam for three to four years.

How are customer service and technical support?

We don't have support in my country because of sanctions.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup for a simple environment is very easy. We just do next, next, next, next for the installation. It can be complicated in a complicated environment. It can be simple for a simple environment. I enjoy installing it. It has a lot of features.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It's very expensive.

What other advice do I have?

It's important that the IT staff had training for VMs. There are many webinars and training courses. My staff doesn't think there is much of a need for training. They just do next, next, next.

I would rate Veeam Backup Replication an eight out of ten. It's the best. It has simplified administration, simple installation, and a simple interface.

I would recommend Veeam Backup Replication. It's good for our virtualization environments.

The best tool for virtualization backup
Pros and Cons
  • "Veeam communicates with the vCenter in VMware, which means it's very smooth and doesn't interrupt production on VMware and you can backup or restore anytime, anywhere."
  • "The deduplication feature could be improved by changing to global deduplication."

What is our primary use case?

My primary use case is as a backup for VMware Hypervisor and SAP HANA.

How has it helped my organization?

Veeam communicates with the vCenter in VMware, which means it's very smooth and doesn't interrupt production on VMware and you can backup or restore anytime, anywhere.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is the virtualization backup - Veeam is the best for this.

What needs improvement?

The deduplication feature could be improved by changing to global deduplication. I am also concerned about the master server landing on Microsoft Windows only, which means that if there is a ransom attack on the Veeam server, all the backup features will go down, and the data will be lost.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for over seven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This solution is very stable, including its support for Hyper-V and Nutanix.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This solution is scalable - you can backup to several locations without additional cost.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I previously used IBM TSM, but the IT environment in Thailand changed from Linux to Intel, which TSM did not support, so I switched to Veeam.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very easy, it takes about one to two hours and requires only one person.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The license can be expensive if you have a lot of VMs, as that's what the cost is calculated from, but it's also flexible in terms of what kind of backup you can use.

What other advice do I have?

Veeam is really easy to deploy and easy to use. I would rate this solution nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Hybrid Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

A fast and easy-to-use solution that supports incremental backups and allows us to do a rollback and recover our services with a little downtime
Pros and Cons
  • "The peace of mind of the backup is very important. Incremental backups make it fast and easy to use. We can recover from any failures in case of any hardware failures or malware attacks. We can do a rollback and recover our services with a little downtime. We can rollback even in the case of unsuccessful updates."
  • "They have an integration with MS SQL, and you have to license MS SQL. This is something they need to change. They should go for an open-source database or a free SQL because you're already buying this product, and you shouldn't have to buy another product."

What is our primary use case?

We use it to guarantee the uptime of our services and servers. We are using its latest version.

What is most valuable?

The peace of mind of the backup is very important. Incremental backups make it fast and easy to use.

We can recover from any failures in case of any hardware failures or malware attacks. We can do a rollback and recover our services with a little downtime. We can rollback even in the case of unsuccessful updates.

What needs improvement?

They have an integration with MS SQL, and you have to license MS SQL. This is something they need to change. They should go for an open-source database or a free SQL because you're already buying this product, and you shouldn't have to buy another product.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for a little over a year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is scalable. It is just a complaint about MS SQL, but with everything else, it is really scalable. You can just add resources and use what you need. It is really flexible. We have six analysts who use this solution.

How are customer service and technical support?

I have never used their technical support.

How was the initial setup?

It is fairly easy to set up the solution. The deployment took just a few hours. Generally, two business days would be enough.

What other advice do I have?

I would advise planning your deployments ahead of time and predicting space refinements so that you can set up everything correctly. If you need to change it later, it is a little more complicated.

I would rate Veeam Backup & Replication a nine out of ten.
