Reliable, easy to use, good support, and requires minimal maintenance

Pros and Cons

  • "It's very easy to work with and it's very reliable."
  • "I would like to see the Veeam cloud solution and Microsoft Office 365 included all in one platform."

What is our primary use case?

The primary use case of this solution is to back up all of our applications and all of our data.

What is most valuable?

It's very easy to work with and it's very reliable.

We haven't had any issues so far, and the backup and restore works very well.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see the Veeam cloud solution and Microsoft Office 365 included all in one platform.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Veeam Backup & Replication for five years.

We are working with the latest version.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We use this solution daily. It's very stable. We have not had any issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's a scalable solution. We started out with a few issues, and after we purchased Office 365 it was easy to store and proceed with other backups.

This is a backup of the applications and data. We don't have any users who access it.

How are customer service and technical support?

We contacted technical support one time only. They were able to solve the issue.

They were good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Previously, we used a few different solutions. Before Veeam, we were using a solution from HP, and Symantec.

We decided to go with Veeam because we had a few issues that were not able to be resolved in time.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was simple. When you compare it with other solutions it was simple.

This solution does not require a lot of maintenance. This component of the solution is very easy. We only need one person to maintain it.

What about the implementation team?

The implementation was completed within the company.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

This is not an expensive solution. It's on the cheaper side.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this product to others who are interested in using it.

I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

A straightforward solution that comes with good support and can be used as an alternative approach for migrating from on-premise to cloud or for disaster recovery

Pros and Cons

  • "It is a straightforward solution. There is no need for a dedicated technical person to do the backup and replication. Veeam is very straightforward when it comes to doing the replication."
  • "It needs to support more applications. In terms of supported applications, Oracle SQL and Office 365 are supported, but I am not sure if it supports Linux-based applications. That's why I'm looking for an alternative. I am currently testing Commvault. The advantage of Commvault is that a lot of applications are supported with it. I am not sure if CIFS is currently supported. It would be nice to have this feature in case it is not already supported"

What is our primary use case?

Our company is an integrator, and we are offering the Veeam solution for our existing clients and some prospective clients. We currently have 10 to 15 clients.

What is most valuable?

It is a straightforward solution. There is no need for a dedicated technical person to do the backup and replication. Veeam is very straightforward when it comes to doing the replication.

What needs improvement?

It needs to support more applications.

It would be nice to have this feature in case it is not already supported.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for over a year now.

How are customer service and technical support?

Veeam offers good support. After you get their product, they provide online support. You just need to raise a ticket, and then someone from global support will contact you. I'm okay with Veeam's support.

How was the initial setup?

It is very straightforward. You just need to spin up the virtual machine and enter proxy, and then you can start the backup.

The deployment takes a couple of hours. It takes a maximum of two or three hours to deploy it for an enterprise. It is a really straightforward solution. To deploy it for an enterprise, you need at least two to three resources.

What other advice do I have?

This solution could be used as an alternative approach for migration from on-premise to cloud or for disaster recovery. If you have two data centers and you need to replicate the primary virtual machines to another site, this can be an option.

I would recommend this solution to others. I would rate Veeam Backup & Replication a nine out of ten.

An easy-to-manage, stable, and scalable solution for disaster recovery and instant VM recovery

Pros and Cons

  • "The instant VM recovery feature is the most valuable. It is a very good tool for disaster recovery. It is also easy to manage."
  • "Its licensing needs to be improved. Its licensing has become complex since last December. They have changed the way the product is licensed, and there is a lot of confusion. Sometimes, when a new version comes, it seems that it has not been tested enough because I usually find some bugs in it. It could also have more integration with other virtualization products, such as desktop virtualization products and open-source virtualization products."

What is our primary use case?

We mainly use it for backup. We are using its latest version.

How has it helped my organization?

It protects us from losing data and having downtime.

What is most valuable?

The instant VM recovery feature is the most valuable. It is a very good tool for disaster recovery. It is also easy to manage.

What needs improvement?

Its licensing needs to be improved. Its licensing has become complex since last December. They have changed the way the product is licensed, and there is a lot of confusion.

Sometimes, when a new version comes, it seems that it has not been tested enough because I usually find some bugs in it.

It could also have more integration with other virtualization products, such as desktop virtualization products and open-source virtualization products.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this product for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is pretty stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Its scalability is great. It offers a lot of options from the scalability point of view.

We have many users of this solution. Most of the workers are using this solution for backup.
We use it daily, and we are planning to keep using this solution.

How are customer service and technical support?

Their technical support is really good. Their responses are quick enough, and they are knowledgeable about the solution.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We didn't use any other product.

How was the initial setup?

Its initial setup was pretty straightforward. It took me about four hours to implement everything and configure everything. You just need one administrator for its deployment and maintenance.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did not evaluate any other product.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this product. It is a very good product.

I would rate Veeam Backup & Replication an eight out of ten.

They started their cloud journey a lot sooner than other solutions

Pros and Cons

  • "I like how Veeam intuitively integrates with Zerto."
  • "Restoration takes about two to four hours with Veeam. Zerto can restore in about 10 seconds. That's the restoration speed I'm looking for now that we're dealing with ransomware."

What is most valuable?

I like how Veeam intuitively integrates with Zerto. They started on their cloud journey a lot sooner than other backup software, and Veeam has a lower footprint on your Commvault.

What needs improvement?

Restoration takes about two to four hours with Veeam. Zerto can restore in about 10 seconds. That's the restoration speed I'm looking for now that we're dealing with ransomware. This is one area where Zerto has an edge on Veeam.  However, both are easy to use.

The only thing I would like to see from Veeam is a calculator for estimating the costs on all the different cloud providers. I don't think any product has this. So if I go into Azure versus AWS, it would be nice to have some way to calculate what I will end up paying.

One thing I've noticed is that both cloud providers will say it's going to cost you X amount to do a backup, and it's simple to compare costs between them. But if you want to do a site recovery, it will cost more to start up all the servers you were backing up in that cloud. Even though one cloud provider might save you money on backup, your total costs will be higher when you factor in restoration. I want the transparency to say Azure is more cost-effective than AWS for backup, but Azure will cost you 2 percent more than the other one to provide that visibility to my client.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Veeam Backup for about 10 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

For traditional environments with physical servers, Veeam isn't as great as combos or traditional backup systems like TSM. However, if you are looking at virtualization or shifting to the cloud, Veeam is stable and quite progressive in those spaces.

How are customer service and support?

Veeam's support is international and quite responsive.

What other advice do I have?

I give Veeam Backup Replication eight out of 10.

Requires better integration with database components and cloud services; VM backups are good

Pros and Cons

  • "The solution does a good job with VM backups."
  • "The solution is rather weak when it comes to database integration."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case of this solution is for application servers, web servers on Linux, Windows, AIX, databases, Db2, Sybase, Oracle and the like.

What is most valuable?

I think this solution does VM back ups very well.

What needs improvement?

I find this product to be rather weak when it comes to database integration and that really is problematic. It needs to have better integration with the database components as well as the cloud-based services.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for about a year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

At the moment, this product is not very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I think it is horizontally scalable, but not vertically very scalable. It tends to run into issues with regards to performance if you require vertical scalability.

How are customer service and technical support?

In South Africa, the technical support is average. They should respond more quickly and be more customer friendly. The rep really needs to be more knowledgeable.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously used Veritas.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was quite complex and took us a few months to install. We used a partner and vendor for the installation because we had a lot of problems. As a result, we're not sure if we'll continue with the solution or choose an alternative.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We chose Veeam because the licensing was cheap and we got a special deal from them.

What other advice do I have?

I wouldn't really recommend this solution. In terms of the integration of this solution, we're finding it doesn't do everything it promises. There is a difference between what the sales people tell you and the reality. Because of the issues we've had, I rate this solution four out of 10.

Has simplified administration, simple installation, and a simple interface

Pros and Cons

  • "The initial setup for a simple environment is very easy. We just do next, next, next, next for the installation. It can be complicated in a complicated environment. It can be simple for a simple environment. I enjoy installing it. It has a lot of features."
  • "I have a problem with the VM. When we started doing a backup, it takes a snapshot for our virtual machines, but when we try it two or three times, in some cases, our virtual machines go to a consolidated state. I don't know why this problem happens. But I still think Veeam is a top-ranking solution."

What is our primary use case?

In most cases, we use Veeam Backup Replication for backup and recovery. In some literal cases, we use it for replication and statics.

What needs improvement?

I have a problem with the VM. When we started doing a backup, it takes a snapshot for our virtual machines, but when we try it two or three times, in some cases, our virtual machines go to a consolidated state. I don't know why this problem happens. But I still think Veeam is a top-ranking solution.

I don't know why this VM problem happens. Sometimes, I think it's because of our environments and performance. I have a little bit of a performance problem when VMs back up. I don't think it's optimized in our environment because of that.

It doesn't have any reporting in it. The reporting and GUI interface can be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veeam for three to four years.

How are customer service and technical support?

We don't have support in my country because of sanctions.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup for a simple environment is very easy. We just do next, next, next, next for the installation. It can be complicated in a complicated environment. It can be simple for a simple environment. I enjoy installing it. It has a lot of features.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It's very expensive.

What other advice do I have?

It's important that the IT staff had training for VMs. There are many webinars and training courses. My staff doesn't think there is much of a need for training. They just do next, next, next.

I would rate Veeam Backup Replication an eight out of ten. It's the best. It has simplified administration, simple installation, and a simple interface.

I would recommend Veeam Backup Replication. It's good for our virtualization environments.

A fast and easy-to-use solution that supports incremental backups and allows us to do a rollback and recover our services with a little downtime

Pros and Cons

  • "The peace of mind of the backup is very important. Incremental backups make it fast and easy to use. We can recover from any failures in case of any hardware failures or malware attacks. We can do a rollback and recover our services with a little downtime. We can rollback even in the case of unsuccessful updates."
  • "They have an integration with MS SQL, and you have to license MS SQL. This is something they need to change. They should go for an open-source database or a free SQL because you're already buying this product, and you shouldn't have to buy another product."

What is our primary use case?

We use it to guarantee the uptime of our services and servers. We are using its latest version.

We can recover from any failures in case of any hardware failures or malware attacks. We can do a rollback and recover our services with a little downtime. We can rollback even in the case of unsuccessful updates.

They have an integration with MS SQL, and you have to license MS SQL. This is something they need to change. They should go for an open-source database or a free SQL because you're already buying this product, and you shouldn't have to buy another product.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for a little over a year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is scalable. It is just a complaint about MS SQL, but with everything else, it is really scalable. You can just add resources and use what you need. It is really flexible. We have six analysts who use this solution.

How are customer service and technical support?

I have never used their technical support.

How was the initial setup?

It is fairly easy to set up the solution. The deployment took just a few hours. Generally, two business days would be enough.

What other advice do I have?

I would advise planning your deployments ahead of time and predicting space refinements so that you can set up everything correctly. If you need to change it later, it is a little more complicated.

I would rate Veeam Backup & Replication a nine out of ten.

Flexible on-premises and cloud solution but it could use more automation

What is our primary use case?

We implemented Veeam Backup & Replication on-prem and also on the cloud - we have both infrastructures. We use it internally to backup our internal servers and we have a cloud infrastructure where we use it to backup our customers' virtual machines for disaster solutions. We use it for disaster replication.

What is most valuable?

In terms of most valuable features, we are mostly using the Cloud Connect feature. It is flexible because you can use it on-prem and on cloud.

What needs improvement?

In terms of what can be improved, I would say they could add automations for disaster migrations and for reverse replications. Overall, they need more automation.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veeam Backup & Replication for six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Veeam Backup & Replication is a stable product.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Veeam Backup & Replication is scalable.

I don't know our user count, but we have about 8,000 virtual machines.

We recently added this product to the environment so we will continue to use it.

How are customer service and technical support?

The Veeam technical support is not very good. We can solve problems one by one because there are some sales teams and technical teams in Turkey. We can contact them and solve the problems with them. But it must be faster and they must have more technical knowledge.

How was the initial setup?

Veeam is very easy to install. We can install it and begin use in one hour.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented it ourselves with our three person backup team made up of three admins.

What other advice do I have?

I would mostly recommend this product because it's easy to use and it is easy to install. On a scale of one to ten, I would give Veeam Backup & Replication a seven.
