Good performance, good backup options, and a lot of documentation, but needs better scalability

Pros and Cons

  • "It is responding very well, and its performance is good. It has a lot of options. For backup, you can connect it to a cloud or a physical hard drive. They also provide an API for integration with different platforms and products. However, we have not integrated it with another product."
  • "Its scalability should be improved."

What is most valuable?

It is responding very well, and its performance is good. It has a lot of options. For backup, you can connect it to a cloud or a physical hard drive.

They also provide an API for integration with different platforms and products. However, we have not integrated it with another product.

What needs improvement?

Its scalability should be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is scalable, but its scalability should be improved. Currently, we are using it for 15 computers. When we tried to increase its usage to 17 computers, it was very slow.

How are customer service and technical support?

I never required technical support from the vendor because they provided a lot of documentation with the product.

I had some difficulties in the first two months. I read most of the information and highlighted a few things, and since then, it is fine. For every update, they provide a lot of documentation.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before Veritas Backup Exec, we were using a solution provided by a South African company called Vox Group. They used to monitor directly from each office. They had their own interface monitoring for monitoring the devices.

How was the initial setup?

Its installation is very simple. It took around one hour.

It is also very simple to upgrade. I just need to launch the new version. Upgrade also takes around one hour. There are some files that we need to upload. We also need to install some drivers and check the compatibility. Every version comes with a driver pack that we need to install.

What about the implementation team?

The first installation was done by a vendor. They did a remote installation. Their company is based in Belgium.

For the monitoring of this solution, we have only two people. My colleague and I handle its monitoring.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this solution for a company with around 15 computers. When we tried to increase its usage to 17 computers, it was very slow. We plan to keep using this solution for now. Later on, if we find something more scalable, we will switch to that.

I would rate Veritas Backup Exec a six out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Over good functionality, stable, and scalable

Pros and Cons

  • "I have found the overall features of the solution very good and there is the option to backup to the cloud."
  • "I have experienced some errors, such as failures, but there have not been very many."

What is our primary use case?

We use Veritas Backup Exec mainly to backup virtual machines (about 120), and also Exchange mailboxes (about 1500).

What is most valuable?

I have found the overall features of the solution very good.

There is the option to backup to the cloud (we don't use it for now).

What needs improvement?

I have experienced some errors. From time to time the backup of one VM fails.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veritas Backup Exec for approximately 15 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Overall the stability of the solution is good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of the solution is very good.

I am the only one really using the solution in my organization. But I have 2 other colleagues able to do most of the tasks required when I'm away.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support is good.  It does not take too long to receive an answer.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have previously used another solution, Arcserve.

How was the initial setup?

The installation is very easy.

What about the implementation team?

In house.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price of Veritas Backup Exec is fair and we pay annually for the license. Compared to other solutions, such as Veeam, it is less expensive.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

For a time we were, long ago, we were using both Acserve and Backup Exec (it was physical
servers at the time, some servers were backed up with Arcserve and others
with Backup Exec). We decided to simplify this and kept the best of the two.

I recently was asked to evaluated Veeam. My conclusion was that for our needs Veeam did not bring anything that backup exec was perfectly able to do, and Veeam was significantly more expensive.

What other advice do I have?

Veritas Backup Exec is a good solution. It can take a little time to get used to the GUI, but once you've understood how it works, it's really great to use. You can quickly do what you want to do, or get the information you want.

I rate Veritas Backup Exec an eight out of ten.

A good interface that makes file restoration easy

Pros and Cons

  • "The interface for this solution is excellent, and it is easy to restore files compared to other solutions."
  • "I would like to be able to create a restore task that can be scheduled so that the same restore action will be performed automatically."

What is our primary use case?

This is our backup and recovery solution.

We are using the on-premise deployment model to backup virtual machines, nas resources and MS  SQL.

How has it helped my organization?

We have felt better when we know that our we have had backup copies.
We have been making restore test of all backup resources.

What is most valuable?

The interface for this solution is excellent, and it is easy to restore files compared to other solutions.

Encryption of data backup on tapes

What needs improvement?

I have found the duplication to be very poor.

It is not clear how to automate processes using the command line interface.

I would like to be able to create a restore task that can be scheduled so that the same restore action will be performed automatically. As it is now, if I want to restore the same resource or the same system for testing then I have to create a job task from scratch. Having an automatic restore would save me time.

The problems I have had seem to be related to integrating the solution.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

enough stability, but need to clear logs manually

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I din't try it yet.

How are customer service and technical support?

Enough  ok,

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

other company = other solution

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of this solution is complex.

What about the implementation team?

I performed the deployment myself.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

One of the cheapest backup solution.

What other advice do I have?

Choosing a backup and recovery system is something that depends on the size of the resources in your environment.

Rating this product is tough because I have had problems with the integration. In this context, I would rate this solution a six out of ten. However, the solution is good and if I were using a new installation, I would rate it an eight out of ten.

Overall, I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Reasonably priced, and reliable, but the the support could be more knowledgeable

Pros and Cons

  • "Compression is the most valuable feature."
  • "There is no training provided, and their technicians are unaware of the features available."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use Veritas Backup Exec for backup.

What is most valuable?

Compression is the most valuable feature.

What needs improvement?

Technical support could be better. In most cases, we must learn and resolve issues on our own. There is no training provided, and their technicians are unaware of the features that are available.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Veritas Backup Exec for one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

So far, it has been stable. However, in order to prevent problems, you should use their most recent platform.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

In terms of Scalability, we haven't done much with it. I'm not sure how scalable Veritas is because we only have three or four sellers on one site.

We have multiple sites, and each one is managed by a different Backup Exec.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support needs improvement.

It is difficult to find a technician, or even a knowledgeable person because most of their technicians are not well-versed in their product.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Veritas was already in place.

We installed Veeam for a new client a few months ago.

The installation of Veeam was hectic. It was difficult at first, and the process took longer than we had anticipated.

It required a lot of other applications. It has several dependencies, even at the client.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is intermediate. You should at least be familiar with it before you install it. It's not easy.

What about the implementation team?

We completed the installation with the assistance of a consultant.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price is reasonable for the features it offers.

What other advice do I have?

We are resellers. We offer products for our clients as well as installation.

I would rate Veritas Backup Exec a seven out of ten.

Reasonably priced, stable and scales well, but the console is complicated

Pros and Cons

  • "Veritas is good for small environments."
  • "In the future, their console should not be complicated."

What is our primary use case?

Veritas is used for standalone servers. such as physical servers We also use it for backups.

What is most valuable?

Veritas is good for small environments.

It's a good product.

What needs improvement?

In one console, you will see a variety of things. In my opinion, it should be simple and straightforward. It is currently a little complicated.

It is not straightforward to click the drives.

Even assigning the tapes to the media pole is difficult when compared to Veeam.

Some of the steps, are to assign, create a set, then a media set, for example.

In the future, their console should not be complicated. For example, When you compare with Veeam it has multiple columns on one side itself where you can browse all of the features. With Veritas, it is not like that at all, it goes to the next window, then the next window, and continues that way to view the features.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Veritas Backup Exec is a stable product.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of Veritas Backup Exec is good.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support is adequate, but it could be improved.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We are also using Veeam and Symantec.

Veeam is completely different when it comes to virtualization, such as virtual machines.

We use Veeam for the majority of our backups.

If I had to rate Veeam, I would give it a ten out of ten.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is not an expensive product.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Veritas Backup Exec a six out of ten.

Flexible, reasonable-priced, and it allows for backing up data from both on-premises and the cloud

Pros and Cons

  • "This is a very flexible product, which allows you to back up not only the physical environment but also the cloud environment."
  • "The integration with SaaS applications like Office 365 needs to be improved."

What is our primary use case?

We are a solution provider and Veritas Backup Exec is one of the backup and recovery solutions that we implement for our clients. This product is used to implement a backup repository to the cloud.

What is most valuable?

This is a very flexible product, which allows you to back up not only the physical environment but also the cloud environment. It has a lot of system and application support.

What needs improvement?

It would be better if it were possible to maintain the information that is in the cloud. The integration with SaaS applications like Office 365 needs to be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been selling Veritas Backup Exec for a few months, and Veritas NetBackup for 14 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Veritas Backup Exec is a scalable product. This product is used for smaller customers, whereas NetBackup is used more as an enterprise solution.

How are customer service and technical support?

I have not had end-user experience with the Veritas technical support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We also work with Veritas NetBackup.

How was the initial setup?

I am not familiar with the installation process, but my understanding is that it's simple.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

This product is priced for smaller customers.

What other advice do I have?

Veritas Backup Exec is a product that I can recommend to others.

I would rate this solution a ten out of ten.

Great backup solution with good file option feature, SQL and EM agent; user friendly

What is our primary use case?

My primary use case for this solution is as backup for our file servers, SQL, things like that. We're a customer of Veritas and I'm a CAD engineer.

What is most valuable?

I like the open file option, SQL agent, and the EM agent. It's a user friendly solution.

What needs improvement?

This is a very good product. I've been comparing it to some DR solutions, there are some products that include disaster recovery which Veritas is lacking for now. It's possible that they will include it in the next release. We're looking for something with a DR backup.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for 15 years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We are a small company and I'm the only person using this product so we haven't tried scaling it. I think the next version, NetBackup, includes the option to expand.

How are customer service and technical support?

The technical support is very good.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward and only takes about half an hour. We do upgrade patches when new releases come through and also carry out regular maintenance.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing of this solution is moderate, I believe.

A stable solution with a straightforward setup, but the price could be better

Pros and Cons

  • "The solution is stable."
  • "The pricing could be improved."

What is our primary use case?

I do not know which version we are currently using, as I am a sales manager and, consequently, cannot expand too much on the solution's technical aspects.

What needs improvement?

The pricing could be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veritas Backup Exec for four or five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

How are customer service and support?

I do not have direct experience with tech support.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is quite straightforward.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution could be more cost-effective.

I do not know how much the solution costs on a monthly or annual basis. I do not possess information concerning the price.

What other advice do I have?

We do the integration of the solution.

At present, there is only one user, a backup administrator, making use of the solution.

One of our customers in New York City made preparations for a DR site, but the project they had planned for this year was delayed by a year or two owing to COVID-19. It seems to me that the customer likely needed the same solution in the DR site.

I rate Veritas Exec Backup as a five or six out of ten.
